Inheritance was reminiscent of the Nora Roberts trilogies I fell in love with! It has a little bit of everything! Ghosts, a little spice, and a mystery worth solving. I also love a heroine that is strong in her own convictions and self while enjoying the company of another! I was a little sad that it ended where it did, but so it goes with a trilogy, right? I look forward to the next this coming fall!
The Inheritance, by Nora Roberts, is the first book in the Lost Bride trilogy. This family drama has secrets, mysteries, family curses, romance, humor and friendship.
Sonya MacTavish has made several significant changes to her life. One particular shocking event changed the trajectory of her life and started the ball rolling for more secrets to be revealed, altering her sense of who she is, as well as her future. She discovers that she has inherited a haunted mansion, of sorts, in a small town in Maine. The house is purported to be cursed because of the seven “lost brides” who were killed on their wedding days. Sonya is determined to vanquish the family curse and put an end to the tormented dreams of the women who came before her.
This ghost story is engaging, immersive and fast-paced. It’s part romance, part mystery and part historical family drama with enough suspenseful elements to make it enticingly eerie. The story ends quite abruptly and with a major cliffhanger, so be prepared to wait until book two to see what happens next.
This book did not disappoint. From the first page to the last I did not want this story to end, well in like the good way. This book is for all those gothic style house lovers with secrets, hauntings, and romance to top it off. The plot was well formed and moved along nicely. It is not overly horrible in terms of spookiness. I will say that the romance could have been a little more but overall I enjoy this title a lot.
Though I adore Nora Roberts I didn’t find this one to be anything spectacular.
I did like the story and even liked the characters. The writing is of course flawless but, I lacked connection to any part of it.
Nora Robert's newest trilogy -- while it's not The Year of One, it's a really interesting time period to read about.
Inheritance takes you on a journey and just pulls you along. Nora Roberts is a magical author who writes characters who ate strong and flawed but also kind and courageous. I want to be Sonya or her friend and live in that fabulous house.
Nora Roberts is one of my favorite storytellers. She can weave a tale with so much detail without dragging the story down with a bunch of details. Her characters are fully formed and loveable. Nora's magic is in full force with Inheritance. The haunting of the Poole House could be over the top, however I found myself laughing out loud sometimes . Sonya MacTavish is a great character. She's strong, daring and is open to taking chances. She also has integrity yet doesn't back down from a fight. I loved her and Trey Oliver together. Nothing seems to rattle Trey. He and Sonya's cousin Owen are fantastic male characters. Another character who is wonderful is Sonya's best friend Cleo. She is another strong female. She can feel the spirits in the house and is a huge supporter for Sonya. My favorite ghost/character was Clover, Sonya's grandma. I laughed out loud when music would play on the iPad to fit what was going on. I think the Inheritance is one of my favorite books by Nora Roberts. I have already marked on my calendar when the next two books come out so I don't miss them. I enjoyed Inheritance so much when I was done I yelled "Nooooo" I didn't want to give the characters up. I wanted to keep going. Nora, please hurry and finish the next two books.
I'm always a fan of Nora Roberts, and the only fault I can find with this book is that the second and third books are so far from publication!
4.5 stars
Super fun first book in the 'Lost Bride' trilogy, I enjoy a good ghost story and Inheritance does not disappoint. Main character Sonya unexpectedly inherits an old, haunted house from a great uncle; once she starts living in her new home, she is introduced to the many spirits inhabiting it. As Sonya settles in, she gets to know people in town and meets some new relatives too, which allows her to become part of the community and learn more about ghosts still in her house.
In true Nora Roberts fashion, there is romance, mystery, drama, music, and magic, lots of magic! I liked the character development, overall story, and even the cliffhanger ending. The next segment, The Mirror, is due to be released in November 2024, and from what I read, will also leave readers clamoring for more.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and have written an objective review.
Well, this started out damn good. A woman who just called off her wedding, gets the news she has a long lost uncle who has left her his manor in Maine. The catch? She must live there for 3 years. The other catch? The manor is haunted. Haunted by long dead relatives that were brides who died on their wedding day. There’s one ghost that isn’t so happy that she’s there. The others? Well, they play with her dog, do her dishes, clean her house, do her laundry, & even play her music. I could use a ghost like that! Anyway, the characters got on my nerves, I could care less about all of Sonya’s work—too much about that. I found some of this story a bit repetitive. There was no chemistry between Sonya and Trey. Owen, Sonya’s cousin, has zero personality….& I’m guessing he’ll have a major role in the next book. Liked the concept & the paranormal aspect of this book. Overall, by midpoint I was getting annoyed & wanted something to happen. It did…..at the end. Not sure I would continue with this series. This has got a lot of great reviews, so I’m an outlier.
Gothic atmosphere, ghostly encounters, haunted mansion, tragic/cursed love story, and a surprise family inheritance?!?! YES! All of this together created one of my favorite books of the year. There is a great story line that caught my attention throughout and did well bouncing between various points in history. I love when stories have curses and the cursed brides and the story behind their forlorn loves was compelling. Sonya and Trey had a great slow-grow romance, and I am hoping to see more of them together in future books, along with their besties and the dog. I highly recommend this book, especially if you enjoy any of the above mentioned tropes, and am excited to have this as a series....hopefully relieved soon!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sending me copy in exchange for an honest review.
The book Inheritance was an enjoyable read. I would recommend any book written by Nora Roberts. Happy Reading!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely.
Sonja goes through a bad breakup right before her wedding. Soon after she learns she has inherited a manor house in Maine from an uncle she didn’t know existed. She decided to check out the house and stay there for a bit to start over.
This book was great! I enjoyed the relationships Sonja had with her mother, best friend, and new friends in Maine. The house becomes its own character and that part is written really well.
I was sucked into the story from the very beginning and could hardly put it down. This is the first book in a new trilogy and I can’t wait for the next one to be released.
A modern-day ghost story full of murder and mayhem with a paranormal twist. I am just amazed at the power of the author's imagination who continues to keep her readers on their toes and involved in her stories from start to finish feverishly turning pages. I hate that this one ends on a cliffhanger and now I am gnawing on my nails for the next chapter to come.
Just when she is ready for a change of scene Sonya finds out that she has inherited a haunted Victorian Mansion on the Maine coast, a legacy from an uncle, her father's twin whom she never knew existed. With some trepidation, Sonya pulls up roots and moves to a haunted house in a quaint small town in Maine where she meets the handsome lawyer Trey who is a witness to some of the ghostly sightings that Sonya has.
Music plays like an answer to an unasked question, the kitchen is cleaned up if she leaves dishes in the sink, beds are made, and laundry is done and folded and put away. I want me one of those ghosts. As Sonya starts to get to know some of the locals she finds out about the curse and the doomed brides. Did her uncle Colin also have ghostly encounters of his own before he died?
With Trey, a cousin that she has just met and her best friend, Sonya starts her ghost hunting activities. She has a compelling sense that she is being forced into looking into the truth behind the curse and solving the mystery of the doomed brides so that the curse can be broken once and for all.
I read on with bated breath as painting manifest and brides talk to Sonya in her waking dreams, and yet I was not prepared for that cliff hanger ending. It's not fair to have to wait a whole year to find out what happens next.
I started Inheritance just before Christmas and finished it a few days later. This book was such a gift! As the holidays are very busy and filled with family and friends, I wasn't able to read as much as I normally would. It didn't matter because I was thinking about Inheritance and telling everyone about the story. This book is like nothing I've read this year and one of my very favorite reads of the year! Well done, Nora Roberts! This book will suck you in and you'll never look at an old house the same again.
Sonya MacTavish is a graphic designer who is getting over a break up with her fiancé. She walked into their home and found him in bed with her cousin! Wedding cancelled and fiancé kicked out of her apartment and her life! The unfortunate thing is that she and the fiancé work at the same place and will see each other regularly. As she's dealing with all of this her ex starts telling lies about her at work and sabotaging her projects. He's also doing juvenile things like keying her car and letting the air out of her tires. As much as Sonya likes working for this company, she tells the 2 owners that she's going to leave and why. They are very supportive and even send her off with one of her best accounts. She is going to try it on her own.
Sonya is home working one day when there's a knock at her door. When she answers, it's a lawyer from Maine, and he says he needs to talk to her. The lawyer tells her that her father had a twin that he never knew about as they were separated at a very young age. As her father died years ago, she can't believe what she's hearing! The lawyer tells her that the twin, Collin Poole, found out he was a twin about a year ago from a DNA test. Once he found out that his twin was dead, he didn't reach out. Collin has recently died and left everything to Sonya. Sonya has now inherited a huge, old mansion overlooking the sea in Maine. She's also inherited a trust to deal with the upkeep, bills, and maintenance required for the house. The only stipulation is that Sonya must live there for 3 years before deciding to sell it.
As she currently lives in Boston where everything is close by, a small town in Maine didn't sound great. Especially when she'd be in a huge mansion by herself. The mansion did have updates such as wifi so Sonya could work easily enough there as she did in Boston. She is shocked at the news and tells the lawyer she needs time to think.
After talking to her mother who had no idea her husband had a twin, she finds out some interesting things. Her father used to have dreams that he was looking in a mirror and saw a face like his looking back, but it wasn't quite his face. It was his twin. He also sketched things that Sonya didn't understand yet, but she would soon.
Sonya decides to make the move as her lawyer has worked out a deal where she can live there for 3 months to see if it will work for her. Sonya falls in love with the property, the views, and the old Victorian mansion. It's a perfect house for her as she has always loved this style. Trey, the lawyer's son, meets her at the house upon arrival. Trey is also a lawyer and his father is the one who told Sonya about the inheritance originally. Trey tells Sonya that the house is haunted, but just a little. Sonya isn't one to believe in ghosts, so just laughs it off until things start happening. Dishes are washed and put away, her bed is made after she showers, turned down at night when she's ready for bed, clothes are laid out, music plays constantly that sends a message about what's going on. It's the kind of ghosts we all wish we had! There's a mystery to solve and a curse to break as Sonya learns 7 brides have died here among many others.
Sonya's best friend, Cleo, moves in with her as the place is so big there's plenty of room. Sonya gets closer to Trey and many of the other people in town. She's thriving here and has lots of work from locals to keep her busy. Will Sonya decide to stay at the end of her 3 months? Will all of the ghosts be friendly? What will Sonya learn about her father? How did one of his paintings end up in this mansion? How do new paintings appear in storage rooms when they weren't there before? This book is absolutely amazing and I couldn't wait to read it every day! I can't wait for the next book in The Lost Bride Trilogy! Please write fast, Nora Roberts!! Your fans can't take it! I rate Inheritance 5 stars with my very highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of Inheritance in exchange for a fair review! #Inheritance
Sonya MacTavish has learned that her deceased father had a twin brother that he knew nothing about. Her uncle Collin has recently passed and has left her almost everything he owned including a manor on the coast of Maine. The catch is that she must live in the manor for at least three years, and with her engagement called off and her job being redundant, she decides to head to the coast since as a graphic designer she can work anywhere.
Trey Doyle is a young lawyer who meets Sonya upon her arrival at the clifftop manor. At Sonya’s unease, he does confirm that the place is haunted. His father and Collin were best friends, so he spent a great deal of time in the house growing up.
Objects get moved, music plays and fires roar in hearths—all things that happen without Sonya doing anything. Will Sonya be able to break the curse and put the lost brides to rest?
I really enjoyed this novel and will definitely recommend it to others. I’ve been reading Nora Roberts books for many years and have read many of her trilogies. I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment of this trilogy.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel. #NetGalley #Inheritance
This story is magical in every sense of the word. The setting is magical as well as Nora’s magical words. I was immediately captivated with this quirky tale of ghosts and funny doggo names. The FMC goes on such a ride in this book. You will enjoy every minute. It does end in a spectacular cliff hanger. Bring on the next book please!
I first started reading Nora Roberts books because she was highly recommended by my older sister. She also says I need to read the books by J.D. Robb, who is also Nora Roberts, just books written in a different genre I believe. As of yet I haven’t read any of those but I have read several by Nora Roberts and they are all fascinating stories that never disappoint. This author is really at the top of her game! Inheritance is the first book in her new Lost Bride Trilogy. It’s magical realism at its very finest. I must admit, reading series is not my favorite thing to do because I have a hard time having to wait for the next book to publish. But after reading this first book, I truly believe the next will be well worth the wait! The story starts out when Sonya, the main character, catches her fiancée in bed with her cousin. She’s more relieved than upset to call off the wedding because she wasn’t feeling like it was the right fit anyways. Soon after she receives a visit from a lawyer and learns that she has inherited a manor in Maine from a family member she never knew existed. From there she travels to Maine and that’s where the story takes hold and gets all so very, very interesting. The manor is huge, massive and beautiful and to Sonya’s surprise, it’s haunted! The ghosts are all very friendly except for one and the story centers around Sonya trying to free these ghosts who were all family members, all brides that were killed by this one evil entity. I loved reading this but can’t wait for the next book as this one leaves off with a massive cliffhanger where Sonya and a distant cousin Owen step through the mirror to go back in time. It’s magical but written in such a way that it seems real and there are parts where the actions of the ghosts really make it comical, especially with the music choices. You’ll just have to read it to see what I mean. I’d like to thank St. Martin’s Press for accepting my request and NetGalley for the arc. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and look forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this series to all my reading friends and anyone who enjoys a little magical realism. I’m giving this book a well deserved 5 star rating!
How am I supposed to calmly wait for the next book in this series? It's going to be torture.
This book has everything. Found family, ghosts, time travel, romance, and an intriguing mystery! Nora Roberts has completely outdone herself. Inheritance is absolutely captivating and a must-read. I do, however, feel I need to mention that it does end on a cliffhanger and you will be left bereft and longing for book two.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I wanted to love this story, I can get behind gothic charm and ghosts but there was no drama in the story. There wasn’t any depth to the characters, everything was just too perfect. The story was unnecessarily too long. Amazing mansion, helpful ghosts, perfect single guy, perfect best friend… if you need what I consider a fluff book after reading something heavy I’d recommend this. The best part to me was actually the cliffhanger at the end! Now I’ll probably read the next one just to see what happened!
