Chet and Bernie are up in the mountains at Christmastime. Fresh air, reindeer, and over-the-top Christmas. What more could you ask for?
Chet, being the canine partner of the Little Detective Agency, could ask for more treats and fewer reindeer. On the other hand, the employer wanted only Chet for the job, but at the Little Detective Agency, Chet and Bernie are partners, each with their own specialty in taking down perps. It’s all or nothing.
Dame Ariadne Carlisle has written 99 books, all with a Christmas theme, and now she has writer’s block. It seems to have stemmed from the disappearance of her favorite reindeer at Kringle Ranch, near Durango, where she’s surrounded by Christmas. Rudy, the lead reindeer, disappeared the day after Thanksgiving, and she hasn’t been able to write since. Ariadne’s personal assistant wants to hire Chet and Bernie to find Rudy and break the writer’s block.
While it’s not their usual kind of job, the money is good, the mountain air is fresh, and it’s Christmas. Of course, it’s not all reindeer games. The personal assistant takes a fall into a gorge, and Bernie finds out it mimics an accident from years ago. Or was it more than an accident? Chet and Bernie, on the job.
Chet, the dog, is the narrator of the books, which leads to some confusion when he finds (and sometimes forgets) clues with no way of telling Bernie. Chet is wonderfully funny, devoted to Bernie, and is serious about his job of bringing down the perp.
This is book 14 in the series, and be warned, you’ll want them all. Quinn also writes under the name Peter Abrahams and has penned over 25 novels, including titles for children and young adults. Spend the holidays with Chet and Bernie. You won’t regret it.
Spencer Quinn has Chet the dog and Bernie, his partner the private investigator hired to find Rudy the reindeer missing from Kringle Ranch by the writer Ariadne. Could Rudy be Up on the Woof Top? Christmas and murder long ago are an intriguing mix. Love the gentle humor from Chet and Bernie. Read and enjoy.
Chet and Bernie have to be my favorite detective team. Chet, is a large dog and narrator of each of their cases. He has an innocence that is marvelous and quite a way with words. This story involves a famous mystery writer, snow and reindeer. So many new discoveries for Chet! As usual, as they look for a missing reindeer, the duo finds themselves in the middle of a much deeper and darker investigation - solving a recent murder as well as a cold case that turns out to be related. Happy endings all around. The mystery plots keep getting better and better and I cherish each visit with Chet and Bernie.
I don’t read a ton of mysteries but I enjoy a good cozy and this series is delightful! It has kept me reading 14 books in and enjoying every page. The author very obviously both understands and loves dogs.
The Chet and Bernie books are some of my favorites just because Chet is always such a good dog and his viewpoint is always relatable to dogs I have known. Part of the appeal is that one always knows what to expect when reading books in this series. They are light fun mysteries, each one entertaining, with characters it's nice to see again like old friends. They are a comfort read.
There is nothing better than finding a new Chet and Bernie book and Up on the Woof Top by Spencer Quinn doesn't disappoint. The story of a Christmas themed author with writer's block and a missing reindeer will be another good mystery to add to the list of holiday books to read. These just get better and better.
Spencer Quinn is one of my favorite authors - in part because I am a dog lover and Chet is a wonderful narrator and protagonist in this book along with his human, Bernie.
The two are called to the home of Dame Carlisle to find her missing reindeer. Naturally it is Christmas time and that sense is felt through out the book.
Chet is not fond of reindeer but soon he and Bernie are involved in an even more serious search.
When the past comes to haunt the Dame and her dead friend it is up to our heroes to solve the crime.
