In the twenty-second installment of Reichs' Temperance Brennan series, Brennan travels to the islands of Turks and Caicos to investigate the murder of a young man visiting Canada and becomes involved in the murders of multiple male tourists in the islands.

While the exotic setting provides a nice change from Montreal and Charlotte, it can't make up for the lack of oomph in the plot. Brennan mostly tags along with law enforcement and only once gets deep into the forensics, while the storyline is muddied from the inclusion of a murder of an acquaintance, gang activity, strange deaths on a boat, and a death by lightning that is never actually realized. For die-hard Brennan fans only.

I really enjoyed this book!! I loved the we got to see Tempe in a new environment and interacting with a new team, especially since most of her "co-workers" have retired or moved on to new positions. We get a nice update on her and Ryan's adventure as a co-habiting couple. I would have liked to hear what Tempe's sister and daughter were up to, but I'm sure we'll see them again later. As always, can't wait for the next installment!!

Temperance Brennan’s latest adventures move beyond Montreal to Turks and Caicos in this book and the change in scenery brings an array of new (and definitely quirky) characters. Early in the Canadian summer, a body from TCI crosses Brennan’s path and prompts a call to law enforcement there…which leads to her arrival on the island to look at some recently unearthed skeletal remains…which leads to more bodies and a very convoluted mystery, in typical Kathy Reichs fashion! The question of if—and how—all of the bodies are connected remains until the final pages and readers will be captivated by this fascinating escapade. Andrew Ryan makes a few brief appearances, but Brennan’s daughter and ex-husband are barely mentioned, so her trip to the Caribbean is quite a departure from most other books in this series. Yet, it is typical in terms of the complex case Brennan gets embroiled in and the high level of detail that unfurls. Longtime fans of Brennan are sure to enjoy this book, but I also think that this is a great book for anyone looking to dive into a new series as Brennan’s backstory is less a part of this book than it has been in previous books. Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

Kathy never fails I love this book! I am so greatful to Netgalley for a advanced readers copy. It is the 22nd novel featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Tempe” Brennan. I started reading her books the summer after watching the first season of Bones and while the books are different I love her story telling and it was great to have the setting be warm and tropical for a change.. I was hooked from the lighting strike .Once Dr. Brennan arrived in Turks and Caicos, however, the book really heated up. Set in paradise, “The Bone Hacker” is the perfect beach read.

The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs is not the first book that I have read about Temperance Brennan and it does not disappoint. It is rich in excitement and tension. Temperance is a forensic anthropologist and she finds herself in a beautiful setting, but because she knows about how people die (read how people are murdered), she is talked into a trip south from Canada. Her skills are needed on the tropical islands of the Turks and Caicos where some people are dying in curious and bewildering ways.

If you like to read books that are intelligent and hard to predict, you will enjoy the Kathy Reichs books about Temperance Brennan. She is a smart and perhaps quirky character that is easy for me, at least, to relate to inasmuch as she is a woman with advanced degrees and has opinions. She has intuition that she tries to ignore, but eventually it will not be ignored, and it is usually correct.

Bone Hacker takes you away to a place where the ocean beckons and palm trees wave. It is the unlucky cadavers that make it more than a vacation. Reich’s plots are always hard to predict and I love that I can never guess “who-dun-it”.

I’d like to start by begging the author to stop describing her brown/Black characters using food references. I mean…that’s so last century and, while I think we’re wonderful, I don’t think we’re necessarily…delicious? It really gets to be too much.

As I review this book, with my caramel skin and decadent double chocolate brownie eyes (lol), I can say that despite the veritable grocery list of character descriptions, the book itself was a good one.

The mystery of it really intrigued me. I was so confused by the how and why of everything. While the *who* of everything wasn’t very surprising, I still enjoyed that aspect of it. It was quite timely.

I do think I missed a bit of Tempe’s relationships. They were definitely not much in attendance here and I’ve found them to be one of the more fun aspects of the series.

Still a good book and I did enjoy it…every caramel inch of me!

This is the twenty-second book in the Temperance Brennan series and I haven't lost interest yet. I never fail to find the books fascinating. This one was no exception and Tempe is pulled into a dangerous and exciting investigation on the islands of Turks and Caicos.

Description:
Called in to examine what is left of a body struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young men—tourists—have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos for years. Seven years ago, the first victim was found in a strange location with both hands cut off; the other visitors vanished without a trace. But, recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common—other than the strange locations where their bodies are eventually found, and the fact that the young men all seem to be the least likely to be involved in foul play. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands’ seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn’t so sure. And then she turns up disturbing clues that what’s at stake may actually have global significance.

It isn’t long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud, and then Temper herself becomes a target.

My Thoughts:
The plot moved quickly and the writing style is exactly what's expected in Kathy Reichs' books - always flows well and keeps my attention. I was surprised several times during the investigation and found things were much bigger than I originally thought. I really liked the detective Tiersa Musgrove and admired her dedication and accomplishments. The main character, as always, is brave, intelligent, and has good instincts. She bases her conclusions on facts and never fails to connect the dots. I loved the beautiful island setting, even as a backdrop to murder.

Thanks to Scribner through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on August 1, 2023.

First thoughts: It was slow getting started. As a fan of Bones, I am not sure I will ever get used to "Booth" speaking in French. A dead guy from Turks and Caicos manages to get the lead detective to fly up and then convince Tempe to fly back with her? Seems a bit...unbelievable, but oh well.

Once I got into, it really got moving. I loved the adventure, the mystery and the pace. I was really intrigued as well by the thought of someone hacking into our GPS technology. That's just terrifying. All in all, it's a good book.

Tempe Brennan is back in action in Montreal when a supposed lightning strike victim sends her down a rabbit hole that takes her to the Turks and Caicos islands. It was nice to see Tempe outside her usual Charlotte/Montreal environs and watch her adapt to not having all her typical resources, and struggling to keep her temper. As always, an engaging read with realistic details.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Tempe is working case that has her stumped. The murders are people from all walks of life, but what is the connection. This book captured my attention from the first page

This is the 22nd Temperance Brennan book. I enjoyed it but I did'nt feel it was up to the detail or as good as the prior ones. Wouldn't not recommend just be aware different.

I am a big fan of the series and Kathy Reichs work. It takes a lot to keep a series exciting and fresh and have new ideas after so long with the characters. I think the setting on this one was fresh, the new characters exciting but it just wasn't my favorite of the books. I don't feel like the primary and secondary mysteries really became compelling or jelled entirely. The wrap up is sudden and, unfortunately, the day after finishing the book, I can't tell you want the ending was. Very unusual for one of these books.

The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs is the latest in the Tempe Brennen series. This mystery, set in the Turks and Caicos, follows Tempe as she traces the disappearance of young men, whose bones have been found but without their hand. As always, the author explains the process of identification of the bones and all the other forensic work that goes into solving the mystery of who they belong to and how they came to be where they were found. Ms. Reich's books are intelligently written while being very entertaining.

Kathy Reichs Temperance Brennan series is one of my absolute favorites. The cast of characters makes these books work as they interact with Tempe. The mystery, the murder, the bones, it's all an incredible story. I loved this Bones series installment and look forward to future books!

This is a very interesting book. I only read one other book of Ms. Reichs’ Bone Series. This continues with Tempe solving mysteries in Canada and Turk Island. If you are a fan of Tempe and Ryan you will enjoy this book immensely. A man throws himself off a bridge during a fireworks show or did he really? This murder brings a police woman from Turk island to Canada where she asks Tempe to come with her back to the islands to help with a series of disappearances that don’t seem connected. Tempe is pleased to go and finds herself embroiled in several cases at once. Turks Island is hiding many secrets and there isn’t much time to enjoy the scenery.
I enjoyed the book, it kept you guessing from the first chapter to the last. I am not a fan of this series because there is so much detail including scientific information that just seems to make the book harder to read. This is not a bad thing and if you enjoy her other books this will be another great adventure to enjoy

I have to admit I liked this entry in the Temperance Brennan series better than the previous one. The locale is interesting with the setting being in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I don’t think I’ve read anything set in that location and it added to the mystery and intrigue of the storyline. There is still the scientific jargon peppered throughout that causes me to pause and graphic depictions of brutal slayings that make you think about man’s ability to do harm to one another.

Did I mention the ending? This book is due to be released on August 1, 2023.

When the investigation of supposed lightning strike victim goes awry Brennan finds herself in the islands of Turks and Caicos in this thrilling novel by wonderful Kathy Reichs. An unusual tattoo and the discover of the remains of two missing young tourists sets off a series of events that has Tempe in the crosshairs once again.

In this new edition to the Temperance Brennan series, we find Brennan investigating a case larger than it seemed. With up to date scientific investigation and the fun interpersonal relationships, this book was engaging start to finish. The case was a little less interesting than past cases and the pacing felt a little off, but I loved seeing Brennan and Ryan back in action, fighting crime in their own ways. Their relationship is fun to read and adds such a human element to these cases.

I love Reichs’ ability to leave subtle hints throughout the novel that lead to big revelations in the end that you never quite see coming. This one was no different. The twists and turns kept me interested and the detailed explanation of the science and expertise was knowledgeable and easy to understand. Reichs’ experience as a forensic anthropologist only enhances the quality of her novels by lending real life perspective to fictional cases.

I always enjoy cracking open a new Tempe Brennan novel and seeing what Brennan is up to next. This book just adds to a must read series.

I will begin by saying that I am a fan of Kathy Reichs and her Temperance Brennan books having read them all. The Bone Hacker felt more forced than usual to to me. Tempe is working a case in Quebec and, through a not too believable issue, she ends up in Turks and Caicos working with local police on a case stretching back years. The characters in Turks are well developed and enjoyable to read about. Not sure how the tourism folks will fell about some of the less than flattering descriptions of Turks though.
Without any spoilers, Tempe, not surprisingly, helps to solve a years old case. The root cause of case is, in my opinion, highly unlikely which doesn't help the believability of the book. In the process of solving the case, she once again, unnecessarily, puts herself in harms way, a plot move that the author seems to use without fail.
I would like to see the author get back to basics with her next book but will continue to read, and usually enjoy, Temperance Brennan and her sleuthing activities.

The Bone Hacker was a good read with many twists and turns. Tempe returns in her usual role seeking answers to a complicated forensic problem. This time she is required to visit Turks and Caicos Islands, a beautiful setting which was well described.
