“The Bone Hacker” is the 22nd installment of the forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan series and the excellent quality and storytelling has remained steady since 1999. As long time readers know, Tempe divides her time between Montreal and Charlotte, but instead of Canadian snow or Old South charm, we get to see Dr. Brennan in a tropical setting in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).

A bizarre case in Montreal has connections in TCI and the savvy police superintendent there, Tiersa Musgrove, sees an opportunity to coax the forensic anthropologist to the islands. There’s been a number of handsome vacationing missing young men (bad for tourism) and two sets of bones still are in situ waiting for an off-island expert. Tempe volunteers and a boat of dead men is also discovered ashore. Suddenly, Tempe has been caught up in serial killer territory and possibly bureaucratic coverups (gotta keep the tourists ignorant of bad things).
Kathy Reichs is as witty and clever as ever, producing an original and thrilling story with her star main character, who is strong, intelligent, decisive and worthy of this continuing series. 5 stars!

Oh! And thank you for telling me what a potcake is!

Thank you to Scribner and NetGalley for a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!

Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES One of the victims, Robert Galloway, has green eyes. (In previous books, it’s established that Tempe’s daughter has green eyes). Also, Lisa, Tempe’s Montreal assistant has aquamarine eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO For once our forensic anthropologist is not in Quebec or the mid-Atlantic and she gets a tropical setting of bougainvillea, oleander and lantana.

“The Bone Hacker” is a classic whodunnit that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is the 22nd novel featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Tempe” Brennan. Although a fan of the TV show “Bones,” this was actually my first time reading one of Kathy Reichs’s novels. I was worried I would be behind, but the author did a fantastic job at the outset of the novel to bring me up to speed.

The story begins with Dr. Brennan being called in to examine the body of a young man struck by lightning. After an investigation, Dr. Brennan determines he was actually shot, and his tattoo links him to Turks and Caicos Islands. Meanwhile on the islands, tourists have mysteriously disappeared. Dr. Brennan heads to Turks and Caicos to find out if the cases are connected to hers. As she arrives in Turks and Caicos, a boat is found with five deceased passengers. A few days later, one of the officers investigating the disappearances is killed. As leads begin to emerge, it’s up to Dr. Brennan to unravel the mystery.

With so many twists and turns, I never knew what was going to happen next, and I had a really fun time reading this book. The beginning of the book was a little slow for me, and it took awhile to get through all the French and the acronyms of the forensic anthropology world. Once Dr. Brennan arrived in Turks and Caicos, however, the book really heated up. Set in paradise, “The Bone Hacker” is the perfect beach read.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading the other novels in this series very soon!

I really have enjoyed reading this series. Tempe is on the case of someone hit by lightning in Canada. As it turns out the suspect was shot and this leads her to the Turks and Caicos islands. Instead of vacationing she is trying to see if her victim is related to tourists that have gone missing on the island.

This book will keep you guessing and has many twists and turns. You will also learn some science. These books are rooted in science and the reader is along for the ride. If you watched the series Bones on TV you will enjoy this book.

Thank you to #netgalley, @KathyReichs, and #Scribner for a copy of this book.

A mesmerizing search for a possible serial killer that hacks off left hands keeps Forensic Anthropologist Temperance Brennan and local law enforcement as well as FBI baffled and following every surprising and deadly twist and turn in Kathy Reich's latest novel The Bone Hacker. It is soooo suspenseful and technologically challenging for the future.

Kathy Reichs’s Bone Hacker is one of the best of all the Temperance Brennan’s novels. First, it’s one of the few books so much Temperance doesn’t do anything stupid. Second, and most important, it is excellent storyline that is suspenseful and has excellent characters. While I personally believe that it’s always better to read all of the books in the series, this one can standalone.

The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs. Wow this is book 22 in the series with Temperance Brennan. Temp is a forensic anthropologist. She ends up on the islands of Turks and Caicos. I’m sure you’ve read the introduction so I won’t repeat that. This is an amazing series. My favorite genre is mystery and if there is forensics, it becomes a plus. Kathy’s books, descriptions and analysis are always spot on because Kathy Reichs is not only a writer but a forensic anthropologist! The writing in the twenty two books are so well done I feel like I know the main characters Temp and Ryan (her guy) along with Birdie. I never need a refresher about the characters, because they have been drawn so well, they stay with me. Kathy does such a wonderful job that I have read her books more than once and have watched the series ‘Bones’ twice! The mysteries always ‘grab’ you and this one is especially. There is a lot going on in this book, I kept telling myself to put it down and it was like ‘one more chapter’. I did not have a clue how this would end up, which is always a plus.

Temperance Brennan is at it again. One of our favorite characters is trying to solve a mystery of people disappearing for no reason. This talented and gifted author has, once again, given us a page turner, a novel that is fiction but reads like nonfiction. It could happen. Temperance, along with her friends, move the story quickly…red herrings aid in the secrets that keep the ending from being discovered too early. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the author. This is a favorite author of mine. Never disappoints.

Thank you NetGalley and Scribner for the eARC The Bone Hacker.
I was very excited getting this book as an ARC since I was such a fan of Bones. The story takes place in Canada and on the islands of Turks and Caicos. I do not read French so I did have to spend a lot of time looking up translations. (book borrower beware) besides that it was a great story.

A man struck by lightening has a tattoo that links him to the Turks and Caicos. Within days, Detective Tiersa Musgrove is in Montreal, convincing Tempe Brennan to return with her to the islands where a bigger case awaits. Tempe agrees to accompany her home to the Turks and Caicos. It won’t be a vacation. Young men there have disappeared and when bodies have been found, they are missing their left hands. Why? And why did a boat leave the Bahamas on a male bonding trip and travel 600 miles off course, sailing in the ocean until all passengers were dead of dehydration? Are gangs and drugs the problem or is it something darker and part of a wider conspiracy?

Tempe Brennan is out of her comfort zone here and it adds to the appeal of The Bone Hacker. Kathy Reichs is at the top of her game. She’s switched the location from the usual Montreal or North Carolina and added freshness with new characters and a tropical location. Of course, the plot is deliciously complicated and twisty. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Scribner and Kathy Reichs for this ARC.

4 stars out of 5.

I am a huge fan of this series and this book did not disappoint. This book was a page turner from start to finish. The plot was interesting, had lots of action and left me wanting more!

Tempe was called in to examine a victim thought to be struck by lightening. A tattoo on the victim brings her to call in the police from the Turks and Caicos. It turns out she is asked to look into a handful of other murder victims that could be related to her lightening strike victim. Tempe goes to the island to see if she can assist in this case. Are the victims connected? Is there something bigger going on?

Thanks Netgalley and Scribner publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
