Thank you to NetGalley and publisher Simon & Shuster for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been reading Kathy Reichs books for years, having discovered her when I was reading another similar series. I love that she is a real life forensic anthropologist adding so much weight to the storylines and plot with her knowledge and experience.

This is an excellent work filled with multiple potential perpetrators of the crimes she is investigating and twists you don’t see coming. Partnering up first with Musgrove and then Moncks to figure out who is killing pretty boy tourists leads Temperence Brennan to involvement in other inexplicable crimes as an assist while visiting Turks and Caicos as a favor to local cop Musgrove.

Highly recommend for good suspense and fans of Reich’s work.

This is Kathy Reichs 22nd outing for her character Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist from Canada. I first read and loved Reichs’ Deja Dead in 1997, when it was first published and went on to win the Ellis Award for Best First Novel and become an international bestseller. Over the years, I have read many in the series, though not all 22 certainly, and none for at least 10 years. I think I decided to go back to read Reichs again to see how Temperance had changed and grown — and to see if I still enjoyed her story.

Temperance finds an unusual tattoo on a body found in the water and follows the trail to the islands of Turks and Caicos — which makes for an interesting setting. The same old character is still tough and smart, yet constantly in personal peril. But I have always liked the spunk of Temperance and her scientific look at a murder. Thankfully, Temperance has indeed grown as a person.

But the plot… were Reichs’ plots always so simple and obvious? Maybe so, as most of those female starring mysteries of the 90’s were also character driven. I enjoyed the catch-up with Temperance. The Bone Hacker is a quick read with an old friend.

The latest Tempe Brennan installment does not disappoint. Tempe is investigating the death of an individual believed to have been struck by lighting when the investigation takes a turn. She ends up in Turks and Caicos investigating a bones discovered and believed to be from some tourists who went missing. This story is fast paced and the change of scenery and characters is refreshing.

As a fan of Kathy Reichs' Tempe Brennan, I was excited to have the opportunity to read her latest, The Bone Hacker.

The story begins in Montreal, where Brennan works part of the time as a forensic anthropologist for the province of Quebec. Since Brennan splits her time between Montreal and Charlotte, NC, you never know which setting you will get. But one thing that you can count on, is Reichs' descriptive writing that helps you feel as if you are there with her characters.

As usual there is a body that Brennan is asked to investigate. What is not typical is that this investigation leads her to leave Canada for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Once in TCI, she is drawn into an additional investigation, danger and intrigue. I missed the comfort of a known setting and some of the stalwart characters that we saw very little of in this story, but did enjoy getting that close attention to detail to an area that I am unfamiliar with.

If you are a fan of forensic procedurals, this book is for you. Of course, if you haven't read any other Kathy Reichs' novels, please start at the beginning!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, & the author for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance ecopy of this book. In this latest installment, Tempe is in Montreal with Ryan when a death investigation leads her to a slew of serial murders in Turks and Caicos. Once again, Tempe excels at using her brain to suss out the details and figure out puzzling details. For me, Tempe never gets old; her adventures remain timely and smartly executed.

"#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her twenty-second high-stakes thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan who, following a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos, enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak worldwide havoc.

Called in to examine what is left of a person thought to have been struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young men - tourists - have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos. Seven years earlier, the first victim was found in a strange location with his left hand hacked off; subsequently, two other visitors vanished without a trace. But, recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common - other than the odd places where their bodies turn up, and the fact that none seems likely to have been involved in criminal activity. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands' seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn't so sure. Disturbingly, she discovers evidence that what's at stake may actually have global significance.

It isn't long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud. Then Temperance herself becomes a target."

Because once you're in Turks and Caicos, well, anything illicit is on that table.

The Bone Hacker is the 23rd in a series of novels featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. I had not read any of Reichs's prior novels, but this one vaguely reminded me of two TV shows - Quincy MD and Bones. It turns out there was good reason. The author, herself a renowned forensic anthropologist, had been a creator of the show Bones and had written a number of its episodes.
As murder mysteries go, this one was both entertaining and, while I thought somewhat implausible, apparently well-grounded in forensic science. I'm giving away nothing by saying that the novel involves Brennan, a US born forensic anthropologist (like the author) who, serving as a medical examiner in Montreal (also like the author), deduces that an unidentified apparent suicide victim was from Turks and Caicos, reaches out to authorities on that island, and then is asked to assist in a separate murder investigation by those same authorities.
Her ensuing trip to the island is the heart of the book-- mixing the grim, the amusing and the dangerous into an interesting read.

The Bone Hacker is a grisly, fast-paced read that keeps you reading. I honestly didn't have a clue as to who the murderer(s) was until the end - and at times I was way off base. If you like murder mysteries in foreign locales, you'll like this one!

Tempe handles difficult autopsies. She is based in Montreal but has been asked to assist on several cases in the islands of Turks and Caicos. There is a string of missing young men and a boat found with all aboard dead. I have read earlier books in this series but it has been awhile since I picked one up. There was enough mystery to keep me interested and I felt this one could be read as a stand alone. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

The Bone Hacker – Kathy Reichs

Tempe Brennan and Andrew Ryan are out on a boat in Montreal, when a freak storm complete with microburst, turns the outing into a quest for survival. After narrowly escaping injury, it comes as no surprise to Tempe that a drowning victim, possibly the victim of a lightning strike has been found in the river, with Tempe assigned to investigate. As she gets the deceased back to her lab, initial attempts to identify the victim are next to impossible due to its condition, so DNA will be sent. As they examine the body, they discover a small tattoo on an upper arm. Images uploaded to an FBI Database link the tattoo to the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI).

A call to the TCI Police identifies the tattoo as a gang insignia and much to Tempe’s surprise, the Detective insists on coming to Montreal. Meanwhile a full autopsy identifies a gunshot wound…and an ID is made by the investigating team. When Detective Musgrove arrives, she tells Temps she is not here for the body – but tells a compelling tale about vanishing US tourists, with two skeletonized bodies recently located – and invites Tempe to TCI to assist.

Intrigued, Tempe heads to the Islands, and just as the plane is landing, Detective Musgrove tells her of another new finding, a boat adrift, the small crew dead, including a child – would she be willing to help? Upon reaching the scene Tempe, expecting a boat full of migrants, is startled to see a late model, high tech boat, known to have all the bells and whistles – so why is the crew dead?

As Tempe assists with these victims and those of the tourists, another shocking murder takes place, leaving Tempe embroiled in something bigger and dangerous than she ever could have imagined…

Fabulous series, great read! Kathy Reichs is at the top of her game, yet just gets better and better!!! Awesome!!

I've been reading the Temperance Brennan novels for a while now, and this one certainly did not disappoint. As with many of the books in the series, I loved seeing the many seemingly different elements introduced at the beginning & how they all tied together in the end. I also enjoyed the discussion of the murder weapon because this weapon was a bit different from what I've seen before and I was able to learn a lot. Finally I enjoyed all the pop culture references and the discussion of religion in this book. That made the story seem more "real", and not some alternate universe somewhere elsewhere.

The latest Temperance Brennan book finds her going to Turks and Caicos to investigate the mysterious deaths of a few tourists over the years. They don’t have any similarities except for their manner of death.

The clues and investigating parts here were fine but there was a lot of confusing things to me in this one. First, I didn’t feel like the Turks and Caicos was necessary here at all. I feel like the plot could’ve really been anywhere, and thus could’ve been in Montreal or North Carolina. I liked the whodunit, but again was confused when incel parts were thrown in at the very end. That could’ve been left out and it would’ve been just as good if not better. Call me nostalgic, but I miss the days when Tempe and Ryan teamed up to solve the crimes. Now that they’re together romantically , I feel like Reichs doesn’t pair them together investigatively anymore. I wish she would bring this back as those are the interactions that made fans of the series to begin with!

This is another amazing book by Kathy Reichs. I love every one of her books. Her characters in this book are amazing. I love the storyline. And didn't expect some of the things that happened.

I really enjoyed this book, with old friend characters and initially three different issues to confront. It is tough to imagine how they will all come together, and it is the mark of a great writer that we know they will.
The setting is gorgeous, Turks & Caicos; the first policewoman is wonderful and has a clear drive to find out the answers, but she meets an overwhelming obstacle and Temperance has toe forge ahead with a different partner.
The mystery encroaches on her personally- and she is safe.
It was a total pleasure to read this book.

I must admit that I have been a fan of Kathy Reich's Tempe Brennan since Deja Dead, the first book in the series. The Bone Hacker, #22 in the series, is a classic installment. As with most of Reich's novels, this is a book that can be read without have read the previous books, although that does help with enjoyment, and faithful readers will enjoy the appearances of the usual cast of characters.
The Bone Hacker starts out with Tempe and Ryan on a boat in the St. Lawrence River when a microburst storm almost destroys the boat and them. Naturellement they survive but others are not so lucky. The following day Tempe is asked to examine the body of a young man who may have been struck by lightning during that storm and is now a water recovery. This leads Tempe to a request for help with murders of young men, initially with nothing in common, on the Turks and Caicos Islands at the behest of Detective Tiersa Musgrove.
Tempe accompanies Musgrove back to TCI where the two form a friendship of mutual respect. When Musgrove is violently murdered determines to find out the murderer of Musgrove and the young male tourists.
My 5-star rating is for a well-plotted mystery, logical actions and reactions by Tempe, an interesting locale, but especially because The Bone Hacker is sitting down with an old friend who has matured but not changed. And bless her heart, Tempe still talks to herself and I love every minute of it.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of The Bone Hacker

While this is not the best book in the Tempe Brennan series, it still feels like meeting long lost friends. Tempe and Andrew Ryan are one of my favorite couples. The cases and the forensic details are always well researched, and the writing is s cellent.

Kathy Reichs has done it again. A really great mystery in her Tempe series. It is very easy to recommend this book.

First off: if you're going to read this book and haven't yet looked at the promo material—don't. (I'm also realizing that I had similar regrets when reading Reichs' The Bone Code. Surely readers can be drawn to these books without being put in a place where too much of the mystery becomes clear before one opens the covers.)

That said, I enjoyed this title as I've enjoyed all of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan novels, but I am disappointed because the plotting while complex, also felt somewhat preordained. I'm not usually good at guessing whodunnit before the denouement, but I had this one figured out by time I'd reached the 2/3 point. I very much enjoyed reading The Bone Hacker, but while the mix of mysteries within this mystery is complex, it's somehow not as perplexing as it might be.

If you've been following Temperance Brennan from the start, you'll get real enjoyment out of this title. If the series is new for you, you may want to read some of the earlier volumes first in order to understand the relationships among the characters.

I received a free electronic review copy of this title from the publisher via NetGalley; the opinions are my own.
