This is a sweet historical fiction about a young woman who lives and breathes for the flowers in her family’s nursery. Sadie questions why the beauty of a garden should only be for the rich. The language is often lyrical and the descriptions of the flowers and soil are rich. Deftly narrated by Cassandra Campbell, who does some very nice accents, I nevertheless felt the book was repetitive at times, thus 3.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy.
I've read every one of Joy's books since her debut novel, and I have to say this is my absolute favorite. This novel is inspired by her family history, particularly her great-great grandmother Sadie Fremd, and the Fremd family nurseries. Set during the Gilded Age; there is nothing Sadie wants more than to run her family's business, but her father expects her to marry a society scion and secure her future. But there is no man that measures up to Sam, one of her father's nursery employees. When an economic depression and tragedy threatens all that Sadie holds dear, she may have to sacrifice her own happiness for her family.
Sadie's love of flowers and her recognition of the joy and hope they inspire really spoke to my heart. Many readers will feel for Sadie as she confronts the limited choices for women in her time, and her desire to break through those barriers. I found Sadie to be very inspiring for always looking for ways to share the beauty of flowers and for finding a way to leave a lasting legacy for her family. If you're like me, and visiting a greenhouse gives you the same happiness as a bookstore, you'll love this one.
I really enjoyed this one!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Harper Muse for my advanced audio copy of All the Pretty Places!
What I Enjoyed-
❤ The Cover- This cover is stunning. It's what first drew me to the book when I was browsing NetGalley.
❤ The Audio- All The Pretty Places was narrated by Cassandra Campbell. I love listening to her books! She did an amazing job of bringing this book to life.
❤ Sadie- Sadie was an amazing main character. She had a passion for business in a time where it wasn't acceptable for women to choose that path in life. I also admired her desire to bring beauty to people and places that had not experienced it before. I loved seeing her succeed.
❤ The Romance- There is a bit of a forbidden romance featured in this book and I loved it.
Overall- Definitely Recommend. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Based on family history the author takes us through trials and joys of horticulture in the 1800’s. This was very well written and kept my attention. I listened to the audio book and finished it in one day. I loved it!
Thank you to #netgalley and #harpermuse for this audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
All the Pretty Places is homemade lemon juice on a warm, summer's day. A gentle breeze on a sunny beach day. A cabin in the hills with a babbling brook. That is to say, this story is a beautiful respite from the trials of life, a wonderful escape you have waited for. No, I wouldn't say you've been eagerly anticipating this trip, it's quiet and sweet.
This gilded age historical fiction is a beautiful look at life outside of the city, of love on the outskirts of wealth. A quiet decision on which direction to follow your heart. If you enjoy historical fiction and romance and are looking for a read with a little less pressure, I would suggest this book.
Powerful and heartwarming!
This was supossed to be just a feature but I started reading it and couldn’t stop. A beautifully written story about second chances, family and love.
All the Pretty Places is the story of many women that lived during that time, being left alone and considered inferior, they couldn't make or take any decision, their parents never considered them to inherit anything, they were not allowed to work and they were always married by conveniences never for love.
Sadie had that terrible experience, her father is looking for a suitor who can marry her and help them economically, she really is heartbroken, her father can't see the amazing work and talent she had, she is the best option to be in charge of the plants and nurseries but still, her father doesn't care, he only cares about what people will say and traditions who really are terrible.
Sadie is in love with someone who is not "suitable" for her, her family has made sure to remind her that she is not able to fall in love only to marry for duty, Sadie is sad and heartbroken, she is working and doing things behind her fathers back because she thinks this is t only way she could accomplish what she ever wanted and also in the meantime help many bringing beauty to bring more smiles and hope to people of the town.
Sadie was a great character, I really love how much she evolves with the story, how strong she is, and how she doesn't take anything for granted, she works and helps no matter if that is putting her relationship with her father at risk, she deserves better and more, she deserves respect ad she knows sooner or later someone will see her abilities and maybe one day her father will see that too.
One of those books that the characters grow alongside the story and make you feel even more connected and enjoyable
The Narrations by Cassandra Campbell were amazing, I love her work, and I really enjoy every book she narrated because she always gives so much to the stories.
Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Muse, for the advanced audio copy of All The Pretty Places in exchange for my honest review
Sweet story. Excellent narrator. The audio book is a slow moving love story along with beautifully described plants, flowers and "gardens" of the Victorian age. The characters are based on the author's family history! You will hear familiar names of that time such as the Astor, Vanderbilt, and the railroad magnet, Henry Flagler along with landscape architect, Fredrick Law Olmsted, known for many park landscapes in the NE and in the Carolinas for his work at Biltmore House. The story itself is woven from the authors' imagination. It is descriptive of possible events during that time period.
I was provided an advanced reader copy at my request and was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions expressed are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This was brilliant audiobook! Cassandra Campbell’s narration was perfect in every way and was the essence of Sadie’s character! I loved listening to this, thank you for the opportunity!
This was a sweet, wholesome book set during the Gilded Age. I enjoyed the premise, the scenery, and the love story. Bonus points for all of the garden/plant talk!
Thank you, Net Galley, for this gem, All the Pretty Places by Joy Callaway. Wow, this book rattled my heart . I would recommend this to everyone.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Muse Audiobooks for the advance reader copy of All the Pretty Places.
All the Pretty Places tells the story of Sadie Fremd, daughter of the nursey owner in Rye, NY in 1893. Sadie just wants to love fellow gardener Sam Jenkins and manage the nursery but her father demands that she marry well and give up on her dream of owning the nursery. Sadie and Sam had planned to run away together several years prior to the beginning of this story but she found one of her father's letters which renewed her hope that he would maybe allow her to run the nursery once he was no longer able to so Sadie didn't meet Sam at the station and he left without her. She has never stopped loving him but her father and fellow society members continue to push her towards marriage to men she doesn't love.
Unfortunately, All the Pretty Places was not for me. I found Sadie to be rather unlikeable and the other characters boring. Sadie is selfish and refuses to accept that she will not be allowed to run the nursery but then she gets angry that all of the men falling all over her refuse to accept her dismissal of them. I don't understand how she is supposedly so liked by the entire town and all of these men when she doesn't seem to care about them at all, even her so called "best friend" who on the rare occasion that she is mentioned, Sadie spends the entire time judging.
The book was well-written and the historical details meticulously researched; the story just wasn't for me.
The narration of the audiobook was excellent.
What a beautiful story based on family stories and history from Joy. I loved this story of a strong woman who did not want to conform to the "norm" in the late 1800s high society. Wonderful characters, wonderful story and beautiful writing!!!
Narrator was perfect for this story...very much enjoyed!
Historical fiction is not my usual wheelhouse so I was not sure how I’d enjoy this, but I LOVED it. Every time I had to put it down was misery. Sadie and Sam, and the whole crew of characters, were easy to fall in love with. The plot was captivating.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me receive this arc! This book was really interesting. I don't usually read a lot of women's fiction but found this one to be enjoyable. This is about a women trying to make her place and a male dominated world. Her family owns a nursery business set in 1893 when their small town finds their economy dropping during a depression. Sadie is pressured to marry wealthy even though her heart is spoken for. Would recommend for anyone who likes women finding their way and making a name for themselves.
3.5 stars, rounding up (because of the author's note at the end! While the note has story spoilers, I do wish I'd known going in that it was based on the true events of the author's ancestors. That's a very cool element.)
Specific to the audiobook: perfectly adequate. The narrator was not abrasive or awkward. Neither did she impress me with her acting chops. She was unobtrusive to the reading experience.
This was a cute little book. Didn't blow me away or anything, but it was a sweet little romance story set against the backdrop of the Gilded Age in the Northeast US. The author's note at the end was actually really cool because it shared that the story was based on a true story of the author's ancestors, which honestly made it more cool. It was a light read that required literally no brain power, which you need sometimes. :) It comes out in just a couple of weeks, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction/romance.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Muse Audio for the free audio book in exchange for an honest review.
This is narrated by Cassandra Campbell who does a great job of making this a very enjoyable read!
Sadie Fremd is of age in 1893 and facing several suitors with offers of marriage, none of which are appealing to her. With many families losing their fortunes on Wall Street, Sadie's family is urging her to match with a man who is financially stable and able to take care of her. Sadie just wants to marry her secret love, Sam, an employee way below her status, and take over the family nursery business. Sadie is a sales person ahead of her time and conspires to bring in multiple new accounts by visiting the women in her societal community to create new business for her family.
I love that this is the story of the author's great-great-grandmother. Sadie is a daring woman following her passion and finding her voice. She sees the beauty of nature, plants and flowers and understands its impact on the lives of others.
The characters are well developed and its a unique story as well! Highly recommend!
This book captivated me with its historical fiction setting of 1893, where a woman strives to make her voice heard and challenge the norms of the society she lives in.
I loved following the main character’s journey as she fought to protect her family’s legacy, defied the expectations of her time, and found true love along the way. I felt a strong connection and admiration for her as a powerful female protagonist.
The romance in this book was also beautiful and moving, showing how love can overcome any obstacle or sacrifice. I’m grateful to NetGalley for providing me with this wonderful book, which I enjoyed immensely.
Much appreciation to Net Galley and Harper Muse and Harper Muse Audio for an advanced copy of this e-book and audio book.
Sadie Fremd, daughter of the owner of a large nursery in Rye, New York during the Gilded Age. Sadie grew up loving plants and flowers and working alongside her father. Despite this era of women being married the the "right man" from the "right family" Sadie fell in love with the man who worked for her father and loved plants as much as she did. This was also the era when women didn't work, so her brothers were expected to take over the family business. However, they didn't know plants like she and her father did. Try as he might, Sadie was refusing all the proposals her father set up for her. She only wanted to run the nursery and build gardens for areas around the city where the poor were suffering from poverty, pollution and nothing to bring joy in their lives. Sadie was unique for her time. This story is based on the author's ancestors, which makes it more inspiring!
I enjoyed the narration of this book and the German accent of Sadie's father and Scottish accent of her ladies maid.
This was a lovely story about Sadie, who dreams of taking over her family’s horticulture business when her father retires. Her true love was horticulture, and Sam (a less than wealthy horticulturist himself)…which did not made her father happy. Will Sadie get to be with the love of her life, or will she marry Henry to save the nursery? You will have to listen or read to find out :)
I LOVE historical fiction, and I also really enjoy when an author bases a story on real life. This one is about Joy Callaway’s ancestors. The fact that this is all as close to truth as possible makes it even more beautiful! This story was so good, the detail and plot development was fantastic - I definitely recommend!
