They say never judge a book by it's cover...but it was absolutely the cover that first appealed to me with this book.
Narration was engaging and done well as was the plot.
Death Warrant takes place in the not so distant future. People have the option to sell their death for reality TV. Our lead in this book does just that. The story is set in two timelines, the one where the lead is setting up her death warrant, and the one where she is living in the now after having already committed.
The concept of this book was interesting and It may have been the catalyst that sends me into a technothriller binge! I have already ordered previous published works by Bryan Johnston following the completion of this book and cannot wait to see what is coming next!
Death Warrant is a TV show where participants willingly sign up to be assassinated in exchange for their family receiving a generous payout. Once they sign the paperwork, their memories are erased and they seemingly go back to normal life not knowing their death is being plotted. Frankie is single with an average career and no real death wish but her brother has some lingering effects and lots of bills from an accident. She signs on to the show to help him.
This is my kind of thriller. You know that mayhem is going to happen, it’s just a matter of when, where and how. I loved how this story layered present time with flashes back to Frankie’s initial conversation with the Death Warrant people. We got to know her deeply without it detailing the action of the plot. Having a mentalist for a main character was also really fun. Lots of great pop culture Easter eggs throughout as well!
Thanks to CamCat Books for gifted access to this audiobook. All opinions above are my own.
It was an interesting topic and story. For regular people and for people working in the media and entertainment industry, what is the ethical nature of entertainment?
For the story itself, I expected more at the beginning of the story for the twists. I thought Mike was more than just a lover and there were secrets about him, but nothing coming out later. Also, at the end I wonder if it always needs an influential rich person to make the plan happen along with they could boost your career or destroy it.
5 out of 5 stars
Thank you to CamCat Books and Netgalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
The moment I read the description of the book I knew I had to read this. I am a Big Brother and reality TV fan so this was right up my alley. I think the scariest thing to me is that I can actually see reality TV heading this way eventually.
Frankie is such a vivacious character. Her love for her brother was so heartwarming and I really enjoyed their relationship. I also really enjoyed Frankie's love of old movie and "old" movies. The mystery was well written and kept me interested the whole time. The story flew by without any slow parts. The narrator Justine Eyer was a great voice for Frankie.
This book certainly held my attention. It gives an insight into what the world could be like for our future generations. Where death, becomes a glorified form of making television. People sign up to have their death, televised whilst making money for those that they leave behind.
The book tells the story of a woman who signs her death warrant. She wants to leave money behind to know that her brothers future is secure. We are taken through the selection process and the reasons why she wants to proceed with a televised death.
This book really makes you think. Is this a sign of our future.?
The narrator had a way of bringing the audiobook to life. I feel that this would make a good film if the right casr were found.
Many thanks to Natalie and the publishers for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy.
I loved this book, it was so good! Everyone should read it and I don't know how this isn't more popular.
I haven't heard anyone talk about this book, but when I read the blurb I was so intrigued that I had to read it and i was not disappointed.
This story hooked me from the beginning and I don't wanted to stop reading to know how this would end. It is interesting to be in the mind of the main character that didn't know anything in the present and folowing her in the past when she agrees to enter in Death Warrant, and also following another pov that brought something interesting to the story.
I loved Frankie (her profession is so cool) and I loved the little romace that happened.
Also, I did not expect the ending, I had some predictions but none of them were correct and I love being surprised by the ending of a book!
Thanks to Netgalley and CamCat Books for the ALC in exchange for my honest review!
This book turned out to be a surprise in the best way! I was expecting something gory and unsettling, but what I got was a heartfelt story about hope. I loved Frankie’s character and got pretty emotional at the end. The mentalist aspect was interesting and the supporting characters were well developed. I could not stop listening!
Death Warrant is one of those stories that is suspenseful from the first chapter because you know the MC’s fate already, but you keep reading, hoping naively that there’s some way she can change her future. Ultimately, I loved the message that each day brings new hope. (Cue Wilson Phillips’s “Hold On.”🎶) Powerful stuff. I highly recommend it. And if you do read it, please let me know so we can talk about it!
I loved the concept of this book. I finished it in a couple of days as I just couldn’t put it down. I had actually forgotten what the plot was when I started it and I think that was definitely a good way to go into it. The narrator was good except for when she read Audrey. Her ‘British’ accent seemed to span many different regions and time periods. I definitely recommend this.
A careful depiction of the life that we are slipping towards, with the manner in which social media and entertainment is exploiting the masses! Scary tale but enthralling! Definitely worth a read!
Set in the not too distant future when you can hire a best friend, mobiles have been replaced by optics and the most popular TV show is death warrant.
When you apply to be on the TV show you are literally signing your own death warrant. You agree to be murdered on live TV. The catch is you won't know its coming because of a mix of hypnotherapy and drugs you won't even remember applying for the show.
This brings us to the main character Frankie a stage mentalist who applies to be on death warrant for the money to improve her brothers life.
I enjoyed this book for the most part. I found the backstage insights of mentalism and illusionists fascinating. Also this take on a classic "who done it". In this case we know who done it and why but we don't know how it will be done or when.
I think the character development could have gone deeper. We only get to know them on a superficial level. Frankie is giving up her life for her brother and I would have loved to read more scenes delving into their relationship.
This book was so good. I really enjoyed it but I figured from the title the picture on the cover and the description that it was gonna be something that I liked and I really enjoyed the ending. It really tied the whole book together and didn’t leave me questioning, what happens I would definitely recommend this book to others.
Audiobook review
This was definitely a unique idea for a book, I've never read anything like it. I found it a little bit slow to start but I think that's because it took me a few chapters to wrap my head around the concept of the story. The story takes place in a futuristic world where the population is slightly flawed, their idea of great TV is watching someone get murdered. Frankie is a mentalist with a witty sense of humor. She's getting by in life but wishes she could be a bigger name in the performing arts. She decides to sign up for the TV show Death Warrant so she can help financially support her brother. I liked the concept of the story, I found it funny and entertaining (I actually laughed out loud in a few parts) and there were a few twists I wasn't expecting at all.
I noticed at the beginning of the book, the narrators gave Frankie a bit of a valley girl type sound to her voice, lots of inflection at the end of words but that disappeared in the middle of the book. Other than that, the pace of the audiobook was good, it wasn't too fast and the different characters were easy to distinguish.
Thanks to Netgalley and Camcat publishing for the chance to listen and review.

Oh my goodness, what an unusual plot and it so worked. I read the other reviews re at the beginning of the mixed narrative as it did throw me but in hindsight it does work. The narration brilliant. The plot I was kept on tender hooks and just needed to keep going till the end, which I loved. I had worked out part but now how and why.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
Thank you for providing me the opportunity to review the audiobook “Death Warrent” prior to publication.
I am appreciative and leave my sincerity review voluntarily.
The concept of this book is so intriguing, I was instantly hooked and couldn’t wait to listen to more of this audiobook. However, as the book advanced, I gradually lost interest and felt it didn’t follow through with my initial intrigue. I was still entertained by this book but it wasn’t as I was hoping.
Have you ever watched a movie that was 2½ hours long and thought that it really should have been edited down to 1½ hours? That is how listening to this audiobook felt to me.
This book was written as if you were watching it as a movie. There were so many details and so many side stories that really made the book too long but would have been great for a movie. If it would've stuck with the initial idea of a TV show that broadcasted the death of individuals in exchange for paying off the family or benefactor, that would've made it flow more smoothly. But instead, we have a side story about the MC's brother, one about a love interest, one about a friend, one about the MC's Mentalist career (in detail), a smaller one about a fellow performer and his act (in detail) and one about the people behind the scenes of the TV show. It just felt like a lot of detail and side stories that could've been edited down to a more interesting level.
That being said, I enjoyed the concept of this Death Warrant show. And even though this is set in the future, you can almost imagine the real possibility of it existing. I mean right now we have shows where contestants face illness and death to win money...it's not too far off.
I found the MC to be very likeable and you definitely root for her in the end. And speaking of end, great ending! I'm very happy with it!
All together, I gave this 4 ⭐️. As far as the narration of the audiobook goes, I enjoyed the narrators and think they did an excellent job.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher and author for allowing me to listen to this audiobook. As always I'm very appreciative!
This is a wonderful, thoroughly entertaining, audio book. The suspense builds up with a past and present telling of the facts. Many twists and possible culprits. So although I could sense part of the outcome, I didn’t work out all of the story line before the end of the book. . Thank you to CamCat Publishing and NetGalley for the audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine.
Not what I was expecting at all and it blew me out of the water. A dystopian techno thriller that didn't hold back any of the lunches. Frankie the MC is applying to be on Death Warrant in order to get a payout for her disabled brother. Frankie a mentalist is a no nonsense above board kind of person with responsibilities and a career that is steady but by no means is she hitting the big time. Death Warrant an online show similar to Big Brother airs with a huge audience to watch the dramatic death of the contestant who never survives. Frankie knows the odds but feels that her death will mean her brother gets the financial support he needs to survive, but then her life takes a turn 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I don't Wang to give away any spoilers, I had guessed to a degree what might happen and why but was not expecting the ending. Soooo good 😊
Wow! Just wow!
In just a few short years, around 50, there is a new TV show- Death Warrant! People who are having financial trouble, or other issues, apply and are screened to be chosen to be a "contestant" on the Death Warrant show. They are hypnotized before they leave so they have no memories of being there. If they are not chosen they will not remember the interview and screening. If they are chosen, the will have no idea when they are to be taken out!
Frankie is a mentalist who makes decent money at her job, but not enough to help save her brother who was in an accident leaving him not only in financial ruin, but with physical and mental issues. If she is chosen, a large portion of the funds earned through the program will be given to her beneficiary, brother.
The narrative flips between Frankie's interview and screening process to her present day, after she's been hypnotized to forget the screening process, to the events leading up to her demise. There are twists and turns involved in almost every step of the way.
I have already told my daughter and friends they have to read this book. Unfortunately, it may be a sign of things to come with so many things being televised or shown on the internet that no one would have believed twenty years ago! George was right, Big Brother is always watching, now everyone else is as well!
I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of this title by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a unique book!
This is about a TV show takes place in a not to far off future where people signed up to be killed on live TV.
To save her brother from financial ruin, Frankie agrees to be assassinated on the most popular television show on the Death Warrant, once she signs her life away her memory is wiped clean, leaving her with no idea she will soon to be killed…
I absolutely loved this book! The whole concept was fascinating and brilliant, it was impossible to stop reading it, I was completely captivated by the story.
I highly recommend reading this incredible book!
Thank you to @netgalley and the publisher for an AudioARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
