I think one of the most disturbing aspects of Bryan Johnston’s Death Warrant is that, as twisted as it sounds, I can almost imagine it becoming a reality in the not too distant future. When I started listening I couldn’t help but think of Stephen King’s The Running Man novella. Why? Because like The Running Man, Death Warrant centers around a death focused reality show. I don’t want to get too deep into the story as there are plenty of twists I wouldn’t want to spoil, but in a nutshell Death Warrant is a reality show in which people sign up to willingly be murdered on tv, with a person they designate getting a percentage of the advertising revenue. Sounds like it would be pure torture, right?, knowing you are going to be killed but unsure of who or when your assassin will strike. Well, Death Warrant has that covered because they wipe any memory of signing up for the show so contestants have no clue what is coming for them. Frankie Percival is the latest person to sign up for the show, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of her brother. The story is well executed. I loved the twisted concept and Frankie is such an easy character to like. You’ll definitely find yourself worrying for her. Justine Eyre does a great job with the narration. I’d like to thank CamCat Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen and review an audio copy of Death Warrant.

Blurb sounded interesting if a little out there but I was looking forward to getting stuck in. Very slow paced to the point it felt like it was just trudging along. I’m not sure the long winded explanations of different topics worked and I found myself droning out a little. To me it felt the main theme of the storyline got a little lost along the way. I was a little bored until about the last 1/4 where it did get interesting and I was pleasantly surprised at how it all came together.
Thanks to Netgalley and Cam Cat Books for the opportunity to listen to #DeathWarrant
Frankie Percival is a mentalist for a living; reading into peoples lives through their micro expressions. She has agreed to have her life ended on a popular TV show - Death Warrant in exchange for a fee after death, which could change her brother’s life. However when her memory is wiped after interview as part of the process, Frankie soon picks up she is being followed and that something out of place is happening but brushes it off…
This is a really original premise, very Black Mirror in style, it is an uncanny, outlandish idea, but also somehow very plausible. The character building and backstory are excellent throughout and the storyline had me hooked with twists and red herrings, waiting to see what would happen next. If you are into gripping thrillers and dystopian futuristic storylines then you will enjoy this.
Narrators are both great, and believable, (Although Audrey’s accent is questionable, is she meant be Cockney, Estuary English, Irish at times? Who knows.)
Compelling, page-turner, surprising. I’ve never read (listened to, actually) a book like this. The plot is unique and revolting at the same time: killing people on live TV in exchange for money? That’s what Frankie signs up for: she voluntarily decides to be murdered live so that her ill brother cashes in from her death and gets to pay his college debts.
The tension builds up as the story goes. It is told in a non-linear way, so that we learn about Frankie’s arrangement with the TV producers at the same time we follow the events that will lead to the day of her death.
Frankie is an adorable character and it’s impossible not to root for her getting out of this death warrant - even though nobody’s done it before. Loved it, listened to the audiobook in 1 day. I think the ending was a little bit rushed and there are some explanations missing, hence the 4 stars. But absolutely recommend giving Death Warrant a chance nonetheless.
I could honestly see this book made into a movie.
Thank you Net Galley for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book!! I was expecting a high speed storyline that chases the main character ( the mc that happens to opt in to a tv show that kills people for ratings)
What you get is actually a really nicely paced story, and lead up to the the chosen day the mc will be killed (which they have no idea when or how it will happen as they are hypnotised shortly after signing their death warrant)
MC Frankie continues with her life, her mentalist show is a huge hit and she meets Mike, life is good which adds to the suspense of the impending kill.
The built up is well done, and I really enjoyed the twist!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
I was so intrigued by the premise of this book. The beginning started off really strong, I was thoroughly enjoying it and then it just fell apart for me. Some parts were dragging with too much information about her being a mentalist, completely avoid the whole plot of the Death Warrant which is what I was here for. This was definitely not a thriller, more in the sci-fi aspect, but still interesting concept.
The narrators did a good job, but I felt so much repetition and information that didn't add much value to the story. I wanted more about the Death Warrant show, the people behind it, how are they getting away with it.
As for the characters I didn't feel any sort of attachment to them in my opinion they weren't really relatable. This might very well be another reason that I wasn't fully immersed in Frankie's career.
Although it was an interesting book, I felt that the Death Warrant aspect needed to be more developed. It needed to be more on the forefront of it. The ending was unexpected for sure which did save the rating for this one.
✨️Thank you @netgalley & @camcatbooks for my free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, when I first started reading this book I thought what have I got myself into? This is ridiculous - and even more than ridiculous, it’s morally wrong!! I even toyed with DNF'ing it 20% in, but I kept thinking - there has got to be more to this. I was so right - it all comes together in the end! Patience grasshoppa..
It's about a Reality TV show set in the future. On this reality TV Show which is hugely popular with the masses and doing everything they can to make "ratings" go through the roof, a public assassination takes place on the TV show with the participant's permission (they sign up, get interviewed, get mentally and physically monitored, and have to pay $50,000 for the privilege of getting killed publicly while being filmed.) When the assassination is finished, (the more spectacular the assassination, the greater the payout), a large amount of money is given to the participant's survivor of choosing.
Enter Frankie Percival, a single woman, likeable but simplistic, who even pays to have a BFF of her choosing at her call (futuristic too). Frankie is a Mentalist (not magician) who performs a one woman show in low-rent theaters. She desperately wants to take care of her brother, so this TV show she figures is the ticket - life has given her all it can, so being a contestant on this show will at least be a grand theatrical exit and take care of her brother.
The TV show's rules specifically state, NO ONE can know she is a participant, in fact, even she will NOT know that she is a target for assassination, because on approval to be a participant, her memory will be wiped completely clean of anything related to the show (by drugs and a futuristic flash device.)
In that 1st interview, Frankie asks the question: Has anyone ever survived an assassination? What happens then? The answer she got is an emphatic NO! Everyone who has signed on the show Death Warrant, gets successfully assassinated. Always. No one beats the Death Warrant.
OK... You'll want to stay with this story all the way through the end - I guarantee it is severely twisted, sometimes humorous, with fair intrigue as you learn about all the weirdness going here, the fascination with death as entertainment. As the secrets and backstories unfold of the characters involved, it is definitely unlike anything I have every read before. Wow - did I change my mind from beginning to end of book. Glad I persisted to the end. Magnificent details of what I perceive as some secrets of a real "Mentalist" by the author, and the narrators were spectacular and believable.
My profound thanks to NetGalley, Bryan Johnston, and Camcat Publishing for an AAC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Death Warrant was a story that stuck with me. I actually increased the score I initially gave this one because I kept thinking about it and realized my initial issue was most likely done on purpose.
Death Warrant is the most popular television show in the world. It's a reality TV show that gives a live broadcast of someone getting killed. If you sign up to be on Death Warrant and make the show your memory is wiped so you won’t know it's coming. If you do make the show you will give someone of your choosing a life-changing amount of money.
Frankie is a mentalist who signs up for the show in order to help her brother. Her brother was in an accident and had brain damage. Frankie knows the money from Death Warrant will give him the chance to get everything he needs.
My initial problem was that I felt we were waiting too long for Death Warrant. We follow Frankie and learn so much about her and we really start to like her but you know the inevitable is coming.
The ending was amazing and I really like how it all came together but I couldn’t help but think it took too long to get to it. Then I kept thinking and I really felt the way we get to know Frankie and her life is really by design. The more I thought about it the more I loved it.
This is definitely a book that I strongly recommend. You won’t be able to put it down until you know the ending.
I did not know that I was a fan of Technothriller until I listened to this book!
I was looking for an audiobook and the cover and title drew me in right away, and the blurb sounded intriguing.
The narration was done really well, I loved the interpretation on the characters and the distinct voices each one had.
The plot is nothing like I have ever read--a future where the most popular reality show is Death Warrant, a show where contestants sell their assassination to play out on live TV. I was kept on the edge anxiously awaiting how it would all end, I was not disappointed!
I was not familiar with the author, but will be getting his previous novel and watching for what comes next!
Fun entertaining read. I love the characters that draw you into the story immediately. If you’re into mind reading, mysteries then grab this book for a nice Sunday afternoon read,
I enjoyed the futuristic society and the idea of society being so obsessed with death in the future that we forget all else.
