A missing girl that literally vanishes from a dead end alley is DCI Days newest case and it is further hampered when she is blackmailed into planting evidence implicating an innocent man. She has a secret about her daughter that will ruin her family and it seems that someone knows it. Julia is first a mother and then a crack detective but can she be both and keep her reputation intact? Twisty mystery with a lot of turns and many characters. Told from multiple point of views it is easy to get confused and while not a quick read it is worth it for those who want a challenge. Her fans will be up for it.
My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy
This author can sometimes be hit or miss for me just solely for the English jargon and I find myself googling British slang to be up to speed. But this was by far one of my favorite favorite reads of 2023
loved this book!! it was very well executed and i love this author so much, it met my expectations perfectly!
So grateful to William Morrow and NetGalley for the chance to read and review an advance copy of this title! I've been hand-selling "Wrong Place Wrong Time" ever since I read it and am glad to say I can do the same with "Just Another Missing Person." So much of what characterizes WPWT is present in JAMP, but nothing more so than complex and fiercely loving parent-child relationships, where a parent desperately want to do right by their child, but struggles to know what "right" looks like in a truly difficult situation. There are also secrets in marriages, demanding jobs, cliff-hanger chapters and, of course, twists! Twists on twists on twists. With McAllister, I know that I'll get a deep look into engaging characters, edge-of-my-seat plotting, and at least a couple GASPS of surprise!
22 year old Olivia is missing. She was seen on CCTV entering an alley but never leaving. Julia is the detective on the case.
I found this book to be somewhat difficult to follow. There are so many characters you can’t always keep track of who is who, especially when the chapters are written in multiple POV. I felt like the author was intentionally trying to confuse the reader with so many characters in hopes that the twists would be more shocking.
I felt like the plot twists were really implausible. Really the whole book felt implausible. There were too many things I thought could never happen. When you put that many together,, sure it makes for a crazy story but one that is just not at all believable..
I do generally like this author, I just think this book had too many things going on. 3⭐️
Thank you to the author, William Morrow Publishing, and NetGalley for the Advance Reader Copy. This is my honest review.
This one starts off with a bang and every woman’s greatest fear. And then it goes completely in a different direction which was great.
I love books like these where there is a moral dilemma at the crux. How far would you go to save your child? How many lines would you cross? Reminded me of The Chain in certain ways. Just when you think you know where it’s going to go, twists will surprise you. I really enjoyed it!
If you like thrillers with multiple POV, strong female detectives and “what would you do?” plots, this book is gonna be for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and WilliamMorrow Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Just Another Missing Person started off great but it got really long and slow during the middle of the story. The story just kept going without any new information.
The story jumped between characters quite a bit and was confusing at times.
Overall the story was a little far fetched in some areas. Not my favorite from this author.
After reading wrong place wrong time, I had such high expectations for this book and it fell flat for me. The first half of the book was super confusing with a lot of different characters and it went back and forth between the current case and the case from a year ago. I struggled through it very slowly and kept putting the book down due to uninteresting.
I didn’t enjoy Julia as a character. She did a lot of things that just didn’t sit well with me in this book. The author used her love for her family and her job as her premise for being shady.
There are also a lot chapters in the book that really didn’t have a purpose. The book would’ve come to the same ending if it hadn’t been added.
The second half of the book is where it really picks up, where it makes me feel like I’m reading a real thriller and I don’t want to put it down. There’s a lot of twists and turns, backstabbing, some murder and some shady cop business in this book.
What I got from the book was just how far someone will go to protect their loved ones, whether it’s a daughter, and girlfriend, or someone you’ve grown fond of through mutual respect and work. It’ll keep you guessing, and the ending is worth struggling through the beginning.
Much love to the author and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC before being published.
Just Another Missing Person was just another book I could NOT put down until well past my bedtime. I had to know what happened!! A must read for thriller fans.
just another missing person is a twisty thriller that will have you second guessing every page. gillian mcallister has officially placed herself on my auto reads list. this book was a RIDE.
DCI julia day is assigned to a high priority missing persons case one night. what she thinks is going to be a run of the mill investigation quickly turns into a nightmare that threatens her own life.
the start of this book for me was slow, but the pay off was so worth it. i found myself completely enthralled once i hit 35%. i wasn’t able to put it down! you’re taken along by different povs, but the book is primarily told by julia, the lead detective on the case.
julia is not only working to save olivia, but also herself. it made for such an anxiety inducing read at times. never knowing what was going to happen, or if julia was going to get caught. the book is told is different tenses, and honestly i enjoyed it. sometimes that annoys me, but i think it really added to the atmosphere of the book.
the plot twists! actually had me jaw slacked at how shocked i was. i was so so satisfied with the ending, and also still shocked at the same time!
the only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the beginning. i just wish it could have gripped me sooner, but i’m so glad i stuck it out!
DCI Julia Day is the lead detective on the case of missing woman, Olivia, who was last seen on CCTV in a dead-end alley. The investigation starts as normal, until someone blackmails her into planting false evidence in order to frame someone else for the crime. Now she must figure out how to throw the case, while simultaneously trying to figure out who her blackmailer is.
The first half of the book was a little bit slow, but once it got to the halfway point I could not put it down! I enjoyed the twists, but I also enjoyed the complexities of the characters in this book. There are three sets of parent/child relationships at play here, and I found myself sympathetic to the plights of all of them. (This is not usually the case for me in mysteries... most of the time the characters are either frustratingly annoying or entirely unlikable to me lol). The ending was satisfying and I even found myself feeling emotional?? Who am I??
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for the ARC!
The first 57% of this book was a struggle for me. I wasn’t intrigued by the premise and found my mind drifting when I tried to read. After that halfway point, it did improve, but I felt like everything was revealed pretty much at that halfway point. I had nothing left to wonder about. As far as investigative mysteries go, this definitely wasn’t the worst one I’ve read. I have no doubt this would be a great read for someone else, but it wasn’t for me.
Thank you to the publisher for the gifted ARC.
Just Another Missing Person is not just another police procedural. Just as I’d come to hope from Gilly McAllister’s previous work, there’s nothing ordinary about this crime or its solution.
Julia Day is a detective in the English city of Portishead. Fellow cops know her as obsessively thorough and unquestionably honest. But when her work puts her family in danger, she has no choice but to improvise. Julia must save her family while finding a missing woman, all the while having to cover her own tracks as they get more and more tangled.
The author has a style that’s not always direct. Entering her characters’ thoughts is entering a dizzying web of quirky memories and distracted musings. And yet, it works. The characters become real. She does something well that few authors can pull off.
It’s hard to follow up a concept as unusual as that Wrong Place, Wrong Time, but this novel did not disappoint. Just when the case starts to make sense, the twists come, and it’s great. Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for this five-star advance read.
Wow. I even read the authors note at the ends of the book saying that she rewrote the twist in the middle a couple times to make sure she had it right. I agree with her because this was marvelous.
I had no idea what was coming.
Great psychological thriller with a mystery and cop mystery all tied together. I read this coming off another cop mystery and I was prepared for it. This was a great book. Definite must read. Gillian is getting even better and I cannot wait to read anything else she writes
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC.
Olivia was last seen on CCTV going into an alley, but then wasn’t seen again. This book had so many twists and turns that were surprising. It is more of a slow burn to start our, but as it continues the pace does get faster with every twist. This was definitely an adventure I enjoyed.
Detective Julia Day investigates the case of a woman who went into a dead end alley and never came back out. A man blackmails her into planting false evidence. This was a great read with great characters and had a totally twisted ending. Thanks NetGalley and William Morrow for this ARC that will be released August 1, 2023!
I loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time so I was really excited when I was able to get an arc of this. This book is twisty as hell, it constantly kept me guessing and shocked me several times. The multiple POVs did get confusing though, some were told in first person, some in third and there was a bit of jumping from past to present that was a little hard to keep up with. Other than that, this was fast-paced and pretty action packed. there was always some new evidence popping up that took the missing person’s case into another direction. Overall, this was an enjoyable mystery and the entire wrap up of the story was very satisfying.
I loved Gillian MacAllister’s book Wrong Place, Wrong Time and was excited to receive this advanced copy. This also will takes readers on a roller coaster of a ride with lots of secrets, backstabbing and treachery. Just when you think one thing is happening, the book goes in a completely different direction, making this a definite page-turner.
I had heard great things about Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister and so jumped at the opportunity when I saw Just Another Missing Person listed on NetGalley. Unfortunately this one was a miss for me.
The book follows Detective Julia Day as she investigates the disappearance of Olivia who is seen on CCTV footage going into a dead-end alleyway and never coming out. But keeping Julia's own secrets depend on her not finding out what happened to Olivia.
I found the "inciting incident" of Julia's secret to be lackluster. Her actions in the past when it happened didn't make much sense to me, and her continued actions as a result were frustrating and at times nonsensical.
You also follow a few perspectives throughout the book, and some of them are written in second person. I understand why this was done in some instances, but I found it got to be confusing and unnecessary.
I was intrigued enough in the mystery to finish the book, and there were plot twists I wasn't expecting. There was also valuable dialogue on being a parent and morality throughout.
I think this is a 2.5/5 for me. I'm definitely in the minority on this one -- early reviews are overwhelmingly positive so far. But, not all books are for all readers!
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the advanced copy in exchange for my review!
I'm okay with multiple POV's, but not when they're all over the place (with some in 1st person and others in 2nd person). It made the book feel disjointed and confusing. There were a few unexpected twists, but it didn't make up for the shortcomings: POV issues, pace that was too slow for the genre, feeling too perfect at times, just to name a few. I didn't really care for any of the characters, who were very one-dimensional. The pacing was dragged down by too much narrative at certain parts of the story. Some readers may be unfamiliar with some of the UK terminology (such as DCI), which aren't well explained.
