Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC!
3.5 rounded up. I’m not sure how to feel about this. I didn’t entering love the writing style, there were a lot of commas. Like, a lot. But it didn’t bother me enough to stop reading it.
I was a little bored at times but overall was invested and wanted to know what happened. I didn’t see most of the twists coming and overall enjoyed it more than i didn’t. I’m glad I have it a shot!
I will say, Art felt pretty useless in this but I guess I understand why he was so prominent in the end. Also, I liked price a lot.
I finally got around to reading Flynn’s second novel! I was really looking forward to this because I was one of the few who did not love her first, but I think I disliked this one even more. I did receive an early release of this, but had a hard time getting into it so I had to start fresh a few weeks ago.
This murder mystery follows Detective Julia Day who is investigating a 22 year old missing person, Olivia, who up in vanished. The last CCTV footage of Olivia shows her entering a dead end alley and never leaving. As Julia begins to investigate she is blackmailed into planting false evidence, that could lead to framing someone different entirely. But what does the black mailer have on Julia, why does he want to frame her, and what happened to Olivia?
I think the plot of this novel is what initially drew me in. A mystery with lots of plot twists is right up my alley, however I find this novel very hard to follow. Initially I thought it was slow moving and then became convoluted. It is told from the perspective of three different characters, two in first person and one in second person.
Ultimately, I was a bit disappointed and would not recommend.
This was a thriller that exists and I read it, but I'm not sure I'll remember it. I enjoyed the read while reading it, and the mystery was intricate and compelling. I appreciated the end of the book a lot. It was fine.
I had such high hopes for this book, especially given how wildly successful McAllister's first novel WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME was. But knowing my track record of opinions on authors selected for "Reese's Book Club," I knew enough to take that "honor" with a grain of salt. The story sounds compelling but this book was just... boring and went nowhere. There were glimmers of hope and I did find this novel to be inventive and unique, but unique does not necessarily make a novel a good one.
I didn't love the characters and found them mostly annoying, and I predicted the twist well in advance of the end of the book which took all the suspense out of a book that had the potential to be very suspenseful. I wanted to love this SO BAD but it just didn't work for me, as someone with entirely too high standards for thrillers. Probably wouldn't recommend this one and want to forget it.
After reading Wrong Place Wrong Time and loving it, I was hoping that this one would be just as good. Thankfully, it was.
This one can get a little tricky as it is told from multiple viewpoints. DCI Julia Day is the lead character. She is organized and dedicated to her work and goes above and beyond to make things go the right way. The beginning of the book tells about an event that makes you see her in a different light.
Emma is a mother as well, and she's not sure about her adult son's secretive manner, the lies she captures him in and his behavior. Has he done something bad?
And the third view that of Lewis, a father desperate to find his missing daughter. She's been gone for almost a year. Is there any hope?
You do have to pay attention because the viewpoints can get a little confusing. But, it was a pageturner and one I would recommend.
Gillian McAllister doesn’t miss!!! DCI Julia Day is investigating the disappearance of a young woman. Just as the investigation is getting started, Julia gets a visit from a stranger giving her instructions that she is reluctant to follow. He doesn't threaten her with a weapon - he threatens her with a secret that Julia does not want to get out. What follows is a story that makes you question everyone's motives and asks the question - how far will you go to keep your family safe? This is a police procedural, and there is a wild twist in the middle. There were also more twists at the end! If you are looking for a great thriller/mystery, pick this one up! I highly recommend it!
At first I wasn't completely sold on this book. It mostly just made me anxious, and I was a little confused. Once the different twists were revealed though, I was hooked. The characters were dynamic and fascinating, and seeing them interact with each other was fun to read. I really wasn't expecting the different surprises throughout the book, but not in a way that they seemed unrealistic. It's a book that I would maybe want to re-read to see if I can see any of the twists coming (and I almost never re-read books). Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for this ARC!
I'm going to preface this by saying that I usually hate reading detective novels. I don't know why, but normally the detective point of view just irritates me.
That is not true of this novel, mostly because I feel that Olivia is so broken that she makes an excellent MC despite the fact that she's a detective. In fact, she breaks so many rules that it seems like the only reason the author gave her this job is that she would have access to things that a normal person wouldn't.
The thing I loved most about this book is that Olivia gets herself so ridiculously entangled into this situation that I couldn't put the book down because I could not figure out how she would manage to get herself out of the situation.
As as I began to unfold what really happened, I was utterly flabbergasted. The end? SO GOOD.
I really wanted to like this book but it was a struggle. I found it really difficult to like and follow the plot to this story , I will only say that about half way through it does get interesting.
4.5 stars
I am a big fan of Gillian McAllister's books. This one did not disappoint either. Julia is a detective under immense stress. Her daughter had something terrible happen to her. Julia has a difficult job searching for missing people .Her most recent case is the one that threatens to push her right over the edge. Olivia is missing, but it seems impossible to solve. She is on CCTV going into a dead end alley...and never emerges. As Julia investigates this case, she is presented with a soul crushing ethical situation. At first, I was frustrated with Julia's choices. But then I asked myself, what wouldn't you do for your daughter? I thank Netgalley for allowing me to read this as an ARC. I highly recommend it!
First of all thank you so much to William Morrow for the ARC of this one! I had really loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time and I was super excited to read this one. The intrigue and mystery was pretty interesting and I did like how the twist was explained. But I think there could an would have been earlier resolves to the mystery. This was definitely a fast paced read.
Not sure where this book went wrong for me, but this was just not it y'all. I really liked Wrong Place, Wrong Time ... although it was really hard to follow on audiobook because of the time loop, so I screamed when I got this book.
I was pretty bored throughout the entire book and actually decided to not finish this one. Perhaps her next will strike a cord!
Olivia goes missing and it’s up to Detective Julia Day to figure out what happened and to find Olivia. But Julia has a secret as well and is now being blackmailed into being a dirty cop by planting evidence to frame someone named Matthew.
I liked how this story followed the perspectives of the cop (Julia), the missing persons father (Lewis) and another lady named Emma who happens to be Mathew’s mom. We also get little bits from the missing girl, Olivia.
This story started out very slow. It actually took me a while to get through because I felt it dragged and I was bored. But I also felt like I had to finish this book since I got an ARC. So it took me awhile reading one chapter at a time. It was confusing because people were dead then alive then dead, but then I realized that the timeline wasn’t linear, pieces started coming together and you get whiplash with all the shoes that drop. Some of it didn’t make sense. I felt like there was such a drawn out beginning then the author was trying to add too many “twists” during the last half. I also feel like the added “thoughts/facts” in between conversations threw me off.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC ebook in exchange for my honest opinion. 3.5 stars
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book! I will be posting my review on social media, to include Instagram, Amazon, Goodreads, and Instagram!
is good not great. Police procedural, unlikeable characters, confusing twists. I was reading along and was honestly convinced a page was missing or there was a major mistake in my advance copy because I was so confused by a new development. Unfortunately, it was just the plot of the book.
This book started off slow but eventually got moving, I enjoyed the different narrators and their perspectives. I really enjoyed the main character and hearing about her relationship with her daughter Genevieve.
I so enjoy Gillian McAllister's writing. I thought Wrong Place Wrong Time was so clever and unique, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on Just Another Missing Person.
My favorite thing about McAllister's thrillers is how strong her characters are. I really loved Julia as the MC and how her past complicated her search for the kidnapper. There was even a hint of marriage narrative as Julia struggled to balance her career with her home life.
The plot unfolds beautifully in ways I didn't expect, and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the connections.
If you liked the magical realism component of Wrong Place Wrong Time, we don't get that in Just Another Missing Person. Regardless, it's another thriller I strongly recommend.
Unfortunately, this book just didn't work for me. I thought it was a little on the long side and the twists didn't really work for me. This is a classic missing persons thriller which is usually a golden ticket for me. I will however continue to give this author another chance.
Gillian McAllister has such a wonderful day with words. I'm a huge fan of hers and this latest novel did not disappoint. I would highly recommend this novel to family and friends.
Boy did I enjoy this one. The pleasure of the story turned on its head. I thought this was going one way, but now we're here. Also enjoyed the themes of what makes a person good. Will be reading more from this author as soon as humanly possible.
