I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So many twists and turns in this one. A lot of moving parts to keep track of, but a very good book. I really liked Julia. This book really made you think about choices and what constituents good and bad and the things we’d do to keep our children safe.
3.5 stars
Filled with unexpected twists and turns that left me wanting more. This was a detective novel, and I feel like those are overdone, but this was not the usual one with boundaries that are crossed.
I loved this book. It was a different concept than most thrillers I’ve read. I liked the back and forth of the different narrators. The plot twists were fun, and even though I expected some of them, it still enhanced the book!
Wrong place wrong time was one of my favorite reads last year. It felt unique and kept me intrigued.
So I was a bit apprehensive to pick this up, this Is a problem of mine sine I always fear to be disappointed.
After finally picking it up, I’m sad to say I was right. This wasn’t as un put downable as Wrong place was and while the plot was interesting, it didn’t keep my interest.
Despite Gillian McAllister's recent popularity, this was my first read of her titles--but it definitely won't be my last! I didn't burn through this title, and instead read a little bit each day (not my norm, at all) and I loved each twist and turn as it came.
I thought this was a solid follow up for Wrong Place Wrong Time. Now, this one didn’t have anything lurk time travel. Instead, it felt like a police procedural—not a thriller. I like those, so I really enjoyed this!
One thing that is worth discussing is how the setting influences the whole plot. I feel like this plot would not work in the USA? just food for thought.
Thank you to netgalley for this copy!
DCI Julia Day, a committed, workaholic policewoman, has crossed a line, for reasons that elicit reader sympathy - and leave us breathlessly wondering how this will turn out for her.
It happened during a missing person's case, that of young Sadie. Julia was distracted by her personal situation and gave it less than her usual attention, something that has haunted her ever since.
Now she's blackmailed - do something against everything she believes in, or her secret will be revealed. How can this turn out well for her?
I requested "Just Another Missing Person" because I had recently read McAllister's "Wrong Place Wrong Time," and although my minor issues with this book were the same as I had with the prior, it's definitely more of a me-thing than it is any fault of the books or the author. McAllister has written a crime drama so intricately entwined with the domestic life of the protagonist and wound through with so many points of view that it's pretty near masterful; the level of attention to detail is amazing. It requires just as much attention and patience on the reader's part, though, so be prepared to have to soak in every single word, and be ready for every last, often-jarring and jaw-dropping turn. (For me, a few of the twists were maybe a *little* bit excessive, but overall, it was a really good read, once I really got into the swing of things.)
This is a slow burn police procedural that kept me guessing until the end. The writing was solid. The whole story comes together at the end with a satisfying conclusion.
When 22 year old Olivia goes missing, Julia thinks it will be like her other cases of missing persons. It turns out to be anything but that. A secret from her and her daughter's past is forced back into light by someone who is forcing her to plant DNA at Olivia's apartment. This is against everything Julia believes in but she can't send herself and her daughter to jail. It's an impossible situation to be in.
A riveting thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! I love the writing style and flow. The characters are well developed and believable.

Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for a review. I loved Wrong Place Wrong Time by this author so l was excited to be approved for an ARC.
Side note: read WPWT as an audiobook and this one as an ebook. I do think audiobooks are the way to go for this author.
What I Liked
- Lots of intertwined mysteries throughout the book
- Around 60%, she flipped it on its head so much that I had to go back and read previous chapters to make sure I hadn’t misread
- Not all criminals are bad and not all cops are good
- the accurate representation of the highs and lows of being a parent
- HEA, loved the ending
Why not 5 stars?
- So many characters, I kept getting them mixed up at the beginning
- I unfortunately called one of the twists pretty early (not the biggest one, but a significant enough one that I was a bit disappointed)
- There was one ginormous plot twist. And it was a great plot twist. But the way it was “revealed” made me think that I had misread previous information. Took me a second for it to click
- I’m sure some of it is just a language / culture thing but some of the writing was just weird
- I did get the uncorrected proof so hopefully most issues were resolved, but there were quite a few typos. I tried not to let it impact my review but there were some things I could legitimately not understand. Like words that make 0 sense and some punctuation that just threw me off completely.
Thank you to NetGalley, publisher and author, for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. My favorite character in the story was Olivia's boyfriend, because he proved to be loyal without caring for consequences. My least favorite character was the person revealed to be the villain, I was surprised! My favorite part of the book was how Olivia's parents were described. They seemed to be a close knit and loving family. My least favorite part of the story was when police could not figure out how Olivia disappeared into a dead end alley, I could not make sense of it and it was distracting! A touching moment of the story was when Olivia's dad found her. There were great and multiple shocking moments in the story but one of my favorites was the reveal of what really happened to Olivia. I really liked this book!
It was hard for me to feel sympathy for a corrupt police officer, no matter the reason. Beyond that, this story sucks you in with unique storytelling. Twists, turns, and unreliable narrators, this book is not “just another missing person” story.
Just Another Missing Person is a fast paced and suspenseful police procedural that raises the question - how much would you do to save your own family?
Detective Julia Day’s missing person case will strike closer to home than she could ever anticipate in the newest thriller from Gillian McAllister. When twenty-two year old Olivia disappears Julia's faced with a moral dilemma. Does Detective Day prioritize solving the case or compromise her police integrity by framing someone else for the disappearance in order to save her family.
McAllister has written a twisty exploration of family obligations and professional responsibilities. The suspense grows as the plot unfolds with more and more secrets being revealed. The character’s struggle to always do the right thing for her family and for her job are believably written. The result is an excellent police procedural and just wait for the twist.
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the opportunity to review this title.
What would you do for your child? How far would you go?
Julia Day works in missing persons, but she’s about to face her toughest case yet. Just Another Missing Person is a thriller with twists and turns that you just don’t see coming. I think I’m pretty good at figuring out the mysteries before they’re revealed, but this one kept me guessing.
This would make a great book club pick and an excellent recommendation for anyone that likes thrillers and mysteries. Just Another Missing Person gets 5/5 from me. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book through and through. The perfect amount of suspense, red herrings, page-turning mystery, and character insight. The plot was intriguing enough that I wasn't focused on character relationships or development. Such a satisfying read!
Now, this was definitely not my favorite thriller. It is lacking some character building and there lots of small, minute mistakes... however, I did have a good time reading, despite figuring the ending out pretty quickly. I can see lots of patrons enjoying this though.
The perfect amount of mystery and thriller for me! This author is fantastic with the plot twists and the sneaky ways that the story can be interpreted. It makes for such a fun read. The characters are all well developed and likable. I had to immediately start discussing details with someone. I was drawn in and fascinated from the first chapter.
JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON is a fast-paced, suspenseful novel combining a traditional police procedural with a deeply personal domestic thriller narrative. McAllister has a gift for giving her readers fabulously addictive stories with relatable, flawed characters.
This book was enjoyable because of all the build-up and carefully placed reveals. When you start reading, there is a clear narrative that seems straightforward. You have a missing girl and an investigator blackmailed with her secret. Then, you really get into it. The twists, turns, and shocking moments will keep anyone on their toes. While reading, I was sure I had it all figured out. Next thing I know…Boom…I am back to square one, piecing together the mystery from a different perspective.
McAllister leveled up with this book. She wrote a gripping, multi-layered thriller while questioning what a parent would do for their child. Filled with duplicity, questionable decisions, and hidden secrets, JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON is not just another domestic thriller. It is a must-read.
