Another fantastic book by Gillian McAllister! This was such a fantastic look at how we think we understand something but never really see it all, not even with the people we love the most. It's also a fantastic thriller and there are a lot of twists and turns and all of them completely work and lead to a cracker of a conclusion. I am so thrilled that Gillian McAllister is finally recognized for the tremendous author that she is, and I can't wait for her next book! Very highly recommended.
★★★★★ 5/5 stars!
✦ Synopsis
When 22 year old Olivia walks into a dead-end alleyway & is never seen again, Detective Julia Day is assigned to the missing persons case. DCI Day is prepared to deal with a family desperate for answers & more time away from her own loved ones, but this case isn't anything she could’ve expected. Forced to jeopardize everything she’s worked & sacrificed for whole career, is Julia willing to do whatever it takes to protect herself & her daughter?
✦My thoughts
You can count on Gillian McAllister for completely unique, captivating plots.
She has a special ability to create suspense in a realistic way, really fill out her characters making them relatable, & introduce ethical quandaries that show just how murky the waters between right & wrong can be.
This is my favorite kind of book. An original & intricately plotted procedural with cleverly hidden red herrings/hints & multiple, completely unpredictable twists! The way she ties things together without giving anything away until exactly the right moment is just amazing. I am already wishing I could reread this again for the first time.
I will say that the first half is a little bit of a slow burn, but stick with it and you'll definitely be glad you did. This is definitely my new go-to book recommendation!
✦ Read this if you like:
- morally gray characters
- missing persons cases (current & cold)
- multiple povs
- good guys forced to do bad things
- unique mystery/thrillers with unpredictable twists
Thank you to @netgalley, @williammorrowbooks & @gillianmauthor for the opportunity to read this ARC ◡̈
This was one of my highly anticipated thrillers, especially after reading, (and LOVING) 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 by Gillian McAllister.
𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 was the perfect mix of true crime, thriller, suspense, and mystery…all rolled into one!

Julia is on the search for Olivia, a 22-year-old, who went missing. She was last seen on a CCTV entering a dead-end alley but not coming out. 😱
That’s not even where it goes dark. The suspect has something on Julia, the worst kind of secret, and now, the safety of Julia’s family is dependent on her NOT finding out what happened to Olivia.
Oh yikes.
I loved the pace, I loved the chapter ending cliffhangers making me want to read more, and I loved the plot! This definitely had me on the edge of my seat, wanting to read just a little bit more.
what I didn’t love…it took me a quarter of the book to get the POV straightened out. I had to go back to get it straightened out as my mind was still in one specific character, yet the POV was a different one. I didn’t catch the switch!
Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🤩
Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow Books for the ARC of this book!!
Just Another Missing Person is a page turning, gasp inducing, wild ride. This was such a fun read - the twists and turns were endless, and there were so many times that I flipped back into past chapters to catch what I missed and to see where my assumptions went wrong. I’m a huge fan of any author who can weave a seamless tale that on first read doesn’t reveal the twist until you’re right on it - and even though I kind of caught one reveal before the end, 99% of this story unfolded with me clueless in the dark.
If you love any of the following, pick this up ASAP:
- corruption and blackmail
- the strength of a parent’s love
- multiple POVs and a colorful character cast
- WTF twists and reveals that make you gasp
- voluntary DNA & CCTV footage
I only recently read Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister and couldn't believe I had waited so long to read it being as I loved it so much. This time, I wasn't going to wait that long to read her newest, Just Another Missing Person, and I'm so glad I didn't sit on this one! Despite some of her not-so-moral choices, I really liked Julia, and I would love to see a series come out of her character. I had no idea what would happen here, and every single twist ended up taking me by surprise. Some parts did get a little confusing to me, but that could have been due to me listening to the audiobook instead of reading it.
Joanne Froggatt, Justin Avoth & Kerry Wotton were the narrators for the audiobook, and while I enjoyed it, it definitely wasn't my favorite audio. One of the female narrators kept saying lol instead of spelling it out L-O-L which seemed really strange to me, and Avoth was a little hard to understand through his accent. Even when I slowed it down, I still had a hard time figuring out exactly what he was saying. Those two things aside, it was a good audiobook, but I think reading this one would be better. The climax wasn't what I was expecting at all, and there were some great little twists along the way. The second half is also much more suspenseful than the first half, and you will find yourself hanging onto every word until it is done!
I love this author’s mature worldview and writing. She is very keen on driving the plot with quite clever turns and plot twists!
She brings into her stories the maturity of a life lived, a mother who loves, suffers and feels the world and its imperfections while acknowledging her own pretty honestly!
I love the honesty and raw emotion with which she makes the reader feel the heroine’s inner world as a mom, as woman, as a professional. All three fighting for domination. Neither one handled to perfection, but isn’t it the real person? The real woman? The one who always struggles to get everything done while not losing the site of important things…. Of things that actually matter…. That’s what the author makes me think about… what really matters in life….
I loved her last book but this one did not work as well for me. I found it to be too long and not as clever. I look forward to her next book!
I loved this book! I will definitely recommend it. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. I DNF at like 20%. So boring, too many characters, hated the writing style.
When I realized this would be a detective novel I was super excited because i love a good police procedural. What if you are a by the book detective and someone comes along and tells you to frame someone for the murder of the girl you are looking for? Would you do it? Julia Day says absolutely not UNTIL she realizes he knows her secret.
22-year-old Olivia has been missing for one day…and counting. She was last seen on CCTV, entering a dead-end alley and not coming back out again.
How could she have disappeared into thin air?
Julia, is the detective heading up the search for Olivia-but the criminal behind the disappearance has very persuasive weapon-he knows Julia’s biggest secret and her family's safety depends on one thing…
Julia must NOT find out what happened to Olivia -instead she must frame somebody else for Olivia’s murder..
The characters in this book are so well-developed and relatable that you become fully invested in their journeys. Julia, the dedicated detective, has her world turned upside down as she searches for the missing Olivia. Her relentless pursuit of the truth and the dilemmas she faces add layers of complexity to the narrative. Then there's Lewis, the father on a desperate mission to find his daughter, tugging at your heartstrings with his unwavering love and determination. And Emma, the fiercely protective single mom, whose struggles and suspicions add an extra layer of tension to the story.
Although not as good in my opinion as Wrong Place, Wrong Time, this definitely held my attention and had many twists and turns. My main issues were all the characters to keep track of along with their inner dialogue. It got super confusing. All in all it was a great read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this Advanced Readers Copy of Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister!
I’m very sad to report that this one did not work for me, and I can’t put my finger on why. I ended up stalling out around the 30% mark. I like this author’s voice and would absolutely try her next novel.
I do not share DNF reviews publicly.
Wow, so much going on with this page-turning thriller! I easily finished this one in a few days because I didn’t want to put it down (and you can skim a lot of the details to still get the whole story 😉). Missing people, fake identities, crooked cops, family ties. I really enjoyed this crime thriller and would definitely recommend it to readers who love a good mystery. The writing was clunky at times but I enjoyed the plot.
This is the author's second book that I DNF so I think it's truly not her, it's me. I've heard great things about them but they're just not for me - if you like thrillers, I would definitely try this.
This is probably a really good book, but I could not for the life of me get into it: I’m dnfing at 15%. I tried and tried and tried to keep going because I was really excited to get accepted for this one because I’ve been wanting to read this author for a while, but it ended up being disappointing. It was so slow and there were so many characters and they were all so pretentious, I was so confused on what was going on and didn’t want to continue.
Just Another Missing Person is a clever suspenseful mystery by the same author as Wrong Place Wrong Time. Olivia has been reported missing. On the way to the crime scene, the detective on the case Julia Day, is blackmailed into planting evidence to protect her secret. As the case gets worked, it becomes a police procedural with a moral dilemma. This is a complex journey with some great twists and turns where just when you think you have it figured out, you don't.
I liked this one a lot, but I also like Gillian McAllister.
When a woman goes missing, seemingly into thin air, Detective Julia Day is on the case. Early on, Julia is blackmailed into planting evidence, and the investigation takes some twisty turns, and leads to someone unexpected.
I really enjoyed the story, and the exploration of how far you would go to protect someone you love.
Personally, I work for a police department, so I don't always love books that are too police procedurally, but this one was quite manageable.
I would recommend it to all of my thriller lovers.
Thanks to Netgalley and William Morrow
for this ebook! I jumped at the chance to read & review this new book by Gillian McAllister, since I loved her last book Wrong Place Wrong Time.
I found the thriller initially challenging to keep the various narratives separated and to find their rolls within the plot, but gradually it all came together and I couldn’t put it down.
My favorite storyline was the extent a mother would go to protect their children, which was seen with both the detective, Julia, and with the mother of an accused perpetrator.
I did not see the twist coming and honestly found it a bit unlikely, but loved the mind games none the less.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! I loved McAllister's 1st book but might have loved this one more! The Twist! the Twist! I literally screamed out loud at one point. I couldn't figure out what was going to happen next.
The beginning of this book was slow and I found it difficult to keep my attention at first, but at some point around halfway the pace picks up and I was hooked. I really enjoyed the crazy plot twists because I didn't see them coming, AT ALL, and they keep happening until the very end of the book! The multiple POVs were confusing at times and it's a complex storyline, but the theme of missing persons, scams, and a moral dilemma was enough to keep me reading until the very end. It wasn't as good as some of her other books, but I don't regret reading it. Overall it was a good story, just needed a little fine tuning.
