Another book that will be a hit for Gillian McAllister. I found this book to be slow. I thought the story was good but the pace of everything was too slow for me.
Overall I enjoyed this book by Gillian McAllister. I was intrigued and wanted to keep reading throughout. The "twist" felt less satisfying than I had hoped, but still a good read.
I’m torn on this book. First, it’s very slow paced with lots of character and plot building - excessive on both accounts. Julia is a local detective that is on the case of a newly missing woman. As part of the case, there are moments that cross the line between professional and personal, and ultimately Julia must decide how far she will go to protect those she loves. There are multiple points of view as well as multiple timelines- all intentional- that lead to confusing scenarios if you aren’t paying attention. Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the ARC.
I received this as an ARC thank you NetGalley
“Family: people will do anything for it.”
Gillian McAllister wrote quite possibly one of my FAVORITE books of 2022 "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" so when I received this ARC I was beyond ecstatic!
The story starts a bit slow but you're truly on the edge of your seat with each twist and turn that comes up in the book. Julia was a bit boring and repetative to me but honestly the story in itself was really good. If you're a fan of police procedural books (think Alex Cross, Tommy Fox, Renee Ballard) then this is perfect for you. I can't wait to see what else Gillian McAllister has in store for us in the future.
I was really looking forward to this release but I have to say I was a little disappointed. The basis of the story was very compelling, police searching for a missing woman and all that entails. But I ended up becoming very confused with the layout of the story, there's not just one missing woman there are two. Eventually you learn why there was confusion between the two cases and once that gets cleared up the story becomes more enjoyable.
Julia Day is a determined detective who was assigned both cases and even with obstacles of her own making she is determined to find out the truth about what happened to Olivia and Sadie even if that means putting her own life in jeopardy.
Thank you to NetGalley, William Morrow Books and the author for the ARC of this book to read and review!
What an absolute mind-bender this was! Spoilers would be so easy to let slip here … so let me just say that there is A LOT of twisty goodness in this one that will keep you trying to figure out what in the world is going on! And when the mystery is revealed, it will smack you sideways! So clever and fast paced! This author definitely knows how to keep your attention and keep you guessing … right up to the end!
It took me a hot minute to settle into the writing style, but I got there and it delivered! This is my second Gillian McAllister experience and I am excited to put more of her books in my library! (my first was Wrong Place, Wrong Time - and it hooked me but good!) Auto buy author status activated!
Interesting plot and dialogue.
I was able to read the book fairly quickly, although my detective hat wasn’t plugged in since I didn’t pick up on some discerning clues very quickly.
I wondered if Julia would beat the hot water she was in.
How anyone could rate this under five stars completely shocks me. The amount of depth that went into this novel was fantastic. The line of thinking for this novel was superb. Soooo good. 👏🏻
This was my first book by this author, and for some reason I had no idea she was British! So that was a fun surprise, I love a good British crime novel.
I do think this book could have been a little bit shorter, but I did love all the different perspectives and 'timelines'. I thought I was confused/missing something at first, but all the pieces came together in such a satisfying way.
Otherwise, my only complaint is that Julia did some dumb sh*t.
Regardless, I will read more from this author!
I really liked this new thriller! Detective Julia Day is investigating the disappearance of Olivia, who was last seen on CCTV walking into a dead end alley and not exiting. Julia is also struggling with an unsolved missing woman from a year earlier as well as something she has covered up related to her daughter. There were several twists & reveals in the story, including one that I was pleased to have figured out. This is a great follow-up to Wrong Place Wrong Time.
This book was a mixed bag for me. The book's first half was not as interesting as the second half. The premise was great, but I do not think procedural mysteries are my thing, especially ones that leave nothing to imagine. Also, I felt like there was a lack of character development. I felt no real connection towards any particular characters. I think I have to read another book by the author to see if it’s just me or if the specific writing style does not agree with me.
Thank you to NetGallery and to William Morrow for giving me a copy of the book.
Chilling and atmospheric, I loved McAllister's latest--character development was superb, and I couldn't stop reading until I had reached the end! A true page-turner.
This is the first book I have read by McAllister and I would definitely say it wasn't disappointing. If you like procedural thrillers with twists and turns then this book is just for you! It is a little slow at the beginning, but picks up at the middle and finishes off with a bang! There are a lot of characters and it was hard to keep up with at the beginning as well, but around the middle it all started making since and rapt up perfectly! I will definitely read another book by McAllister!
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow publishing for the ARC of Just Another Missing Person in exchange for my honest review.
This is a DNF for me at 50%. I am SO BORED, this book is very slow moving. I just don't like this author's style of writing and switching POV's. I know that everyone states that the second half gets better but I'm just not invested in this story enough to continue.
PROS: Interesting premise
CONS:
*Slow pace
*Too many characters
*Repetition -- oh my gosh, so much repetition of what is in Julia's mind. they also keep asking each other "are you okay", not sure why that was repeated so many times but it irritated me.
*I did not like the main protagonist at all - couldn't connect with some of the things that she did and could think of other ways she could have handled this.
All in all I guess I was just not the right audience for this book!
I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley.
*Since I DNF this book I will not post on purchasing sites. Thank You
Olivia is just another missing person. Or is she? Julia the detective has let’s just say her hands dirty herself as she investigates. Then she is caught up in it when she gets abducted and told to gram someone for Olivia’s murder….. or else Julia’s daughters dirty deed will come to light. Yikes! This one is so good and it kept me guessing all the way!
This was pretty good but not my favorite read of the year. It was entertaining and such but it took me a minute to get through
Thank you Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advanced copy of this publication.
Gillian once again authors a gem. This one keeps you coming back for more with more turns than switchbacks on a mountain road.
I will not spoil it for others but this one is a read it thru to the end type of book.
Enjoy!
Many twists and turns in this one, and nothing is as it seems. Olivia seemingly disappears into thin air…seen on CCTV going in, but never coming out. But Julia, the detective searching for Olivia, has even bigger problems…and her family’s safety depends on her NOT solving this mystery.
If it’s okay with all of you I’m just going to start calling Gillian McAllister’s books, “Thriller Games of Truth with Consequences: The Ethical Dilemma Edition”. I’m not saying that to be insulting in any way, shape, or form. It’s simply that both of the books I’ve read of hers (Wrong Place, Wrong Time and now Just Another Missing Person) were both largely domestic thrillers revolving around mothers who faced huge ethical dilemmas involving their child and the cost of telling the truth would have major consequences for both them and their child. So the idea behind the whole book is, “How do I save my child? Should they be saved? If I do this, should I try to save myself too, or should I pay the price for the crime my child committed?”.
In Wrong Place, Wrong Time, the plot largely centered on a mom and her son. In Just Another Missing Person, however, we’ve got more than one parent facing an ethical dilemma and potential consequences for unlawful behavior in the name of either protecting or avenging their child. Heck, we’ve got ethical dilemmas just about everywhere we turn. Guess what? I’m here for it. I was so into this book I didn’t want to come out. I lost track of time.
This is one of those rare thrillers that actually managed to shock the heck out of me. The first turn actually caused me to shout, “What the f*ck?”
There were a few more surprises after that (not going to say how many), but they were all actual surprises and they were all welcome ones. At no time did I feel like McAllister had just shoehorned a turn in just so she could screw with us readers to pad the book. Every time we needed to change direction it was obvious why we had to and it ended up making sense. This book was thoughtfully, carefully, strategically constructed. I loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time, but I think I love Just Another Missing Person more simply because it has this vibe surrounding all the characters that says, “You all f*cked around and found out”. And they did. They all found out the cost of turning your back on the ethics of your profession or your place in someone’s life. And then there’s that murky, blurry, shadowy place: what’s the ethics when the love and need to protect your child runs right into the ethics of your profession? What then?
I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a book not to be missed.
I was provided a copy of this title by NetGalley and the author. All thoughts, opinions, views, and ideas expressed herein are mine and mine alone. Thank you.

📖 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: When Detective Julia Day is notified of the disappearance of a young woman named Olivia, she expects a typical missing person case. But when Julia is accosted by a masked man related to the case, she soon realizes that Olivia is far from Just Another Missing Person. The man threatens to expose Julia's deepest, darkest, most life-changing secret... unless she frames someone for the murder. Julia is torn between her strict ethical code and her fierce protectiveness of her family. She must race against the clock to piece this together before she's crossed a line she can't uncross.
💭 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: I read McAllister's debut Wrong Place, Wrong Time earlier this year and it blew me away! That book set the bar very high, so I was anxious to see if she could wow me a second time.... Well friends, Gillian McAllister did it again! 🙌🏼 I'm officially WOWED!
Just Another Missing Person is a perfectly-paced police procedural with an abundance of heart. It's intelligent, gripping, intricately woven, emotional, twisty, and I LOVED IT.
I also love the way this author includes mother/child relationships in her novels. It adds so much depth and really pulls me into the story and makes me care about and relate to her characters.
I will be shouting from the rooftops about this one for a long time. 🎉
📌 Note: What's funny about this glowing review is that I actually struggled with this book in the beginning. Thankfully I was able to recognize that it was a *me* issue. It was the wrong time (wrong place, ha 😆) for me. Life was busy and stressful, and I was distracted. A thriller this intricate requires you to be all-in. I'm so grateful I waited until I could be all-in. 🥰
