Thank you to Taous Merakchi, Da Coffee Time and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

"Coven" by Taous Merakchi and Da Coffee Time is a delightful graphic novel that whisked me away into a world of enchantment and teenage camaraderie. With a mix of supernatural elements and the power of friendship, this story captures the essence of youthful rebellion and the unexpected consequences that arise from delving into the mystical unknown.

Eve, Diane, Lily, and Morgane, a group of close-knit friends, embark on a mission to save their beloved elm tree from being destroyed. Determined to protect it, they turn to witchcraft, hoping their rituals will have an impact. To their surprise, their incantation succeeds, but with it comes a dangerous revelation—a Demon of Chaos has been unleashed, threatening their very existence.

Merakchi and Da Coffee Time expertly craft a tale that balances charm, spookiness, and a touch of modernity. The diverse cast of characters adds depth to the story, and I found myself easily connecting with each of the girls. Their friendship is beautifully portrayed, showcasing the support and unity they find in one another. The inclusion of LGBTQ+ representation is a refreshing aspect of the narrative, seamlessly integrated into the plot.

The artwork throughout the graphic novel is visually appealing and skillfully conveys the mood of the story. The illustrations capture the eerie atmosphere and occasional moments of creepiness, complementing the plot's supernatural elements. While there were instances where the character proportions seemed slightly off, it did not detract significantly from my overall enjoyment.

One aspect that stood out was the intriguing plot. "Coven" combines the excitement of teen witches with the suspense of unexpected consequences. The authors successfully build suspense, drawing readers deeper into the story with each turn of the page. While the narrative could have benefited from further character development and exploration, the overall pacing and plot structure kept me engaged and eager to discover what awaited the girls.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Coven" and its blend of magic, friendship, and spine-tingling adventures. This graphic novel provides a satisfying dose of witchy girl power, and its open-ended conclusion leaves room for potential sequels to further explore the lives of these captivating characters. For fans of witchy tales with a contemporary twist, "Coven" is a recommended read that will leave you eagerly awaiting more enchanting adventures from this talented creative team.

Aww i loved this so much! It was short & sweet & spooky in its own right! I adored the diversity & the way the friendship was portrayed between the group, a group of friends use magic to save a tree & honestly I hope there’s a follow up! It wasn’t a cliffhanger but we could definitely get another book to continue their story further! Highly recommend 🫶🏼

I loved reading this. It’s such a short and cute, yet supernaturally appeasing read if you’re in to spirits and witches. Although it didn’t end on a cliffhanger, it definitely left room to continue on the story and I really hope they do!

Coven is a short graphic novel/comic about four girls who use magic to try and save a local tree from being destroyed and end up with more than they bargained for. It’s very cute, very modern and oddly knocks the nail on the head for how friendships look nowadays.

Coven is an amazingly funny comic with beautiful illustrations and enough of a storyline to keep you intrigued throughout. Very light read and enjoyable throughout! Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves the idea of the supernatural and wants something light!

Coven was a really cute and a little bit scary Graphic Novel about a very divers group of girls and I really liked it. The art style was very nice and the colors matched the atmosphere of the book very well. The story was very interesting and gave me chills quite a few times. The characters were drawn so differently I had no problem of mixing anyone up what is mostly a big problem of mine reading this format. So overall I would recommend this Graphic Novel and I hope was maybe a second part

It all begins with the best intentions: To save an old tree in the park from being cut down for no reason at all, four friends band together to perform a ritual.

They have dabbled in their past, but stopped with playing round with wicca stuff. Now that they have nothing more to lose, they turn to what once was a silly hobby since they already have everything they would need, and see what happens.
It works! But it might come with consequences no one expected.

I loved the depiction of the teenager-parent relationships, they all seem to have great families. Also, the families were used to sprinkle some queerness into the story, one of the four girls has two moms, for example.
There was no bullying in the plot, but plenty teenager-drama nonetheless.

I liked it, the characters, the plot, the pacing - and especially the twist and the end.
Would read more by this team of artists.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

This graphic novel was so fun! And the tiniest bit spooky. I loved the diversity of the characters and how they faced their challenges. I would recommend this as a fun witchy & spooky read, especially for the spooky season!

Coven is a graphic novel that follows four teenage girls who accidently summon a demon when trying to do some small rituals to protect their favorite local tree. And they are put in danger quiet often. Lol

First off, I love the Sabrina/Archie, The Craft, type of vibes. I will always read and watch stories about teen witches. It's a trope I enjoy. The art was very cool and I really liked the almost "retro" comic style. But every once in a while, a page would seem more messy and rushed. I think the consistency of the art could be a little better. But it wasn't enough to bother me.
I really liked the characters. All the girls were defined individuals. The group was diverse enough that I never mixed them up. I loved that there was a good bit of lgbtq representation in there, too.
My only problem was I wanted more. Because it was just one story, it felt rushed at times. This is the type of story that would be great as a series. Getting to know each girl and their lives more in depth would be nice. I would read that series. It would also give the author some time to expand on the characters and for the artist to improve the consistency of the art. The story did end with an open ending where more stories about the girls could be written. So that's always an option. So, if you love stories of witchy teenagers, I recommended checking this one out.

Such an easy, but enjoyable read. Love the main characters and how each were very original and developed. My only complaint is that I was hoping it ended with a cliffhanger so we’d get a sequel!

If you've visited my blog before, you'll know that I am a massive fan of graphic novels. I have even made the decision to focus on graphic novels for my thesis in grad school! This means that I am always requesting graphic novels on Netgalley, and this one in particular really grabbed my attention.

Coven initially stood out to me because of the witchy vibes--I am a sucker for a good witch story. However, I am a little picky about my "spooky" reads since I read so many of them! Thankfully, Coven was a fun read, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a witchy, summertime read.

What I Liked
The Plot – Right off the bat, Coven throws you into an intriguing, dark plot that immediately grabs your attention. This can be a bit jarring, but I think the story does a great job of building suspense for the main conflict before going back to the beginning to give the proper backstory. I was also excited to see the story was a little darker than I expected.
The Characters – After reading many graphic novels over the past two years, my number one complaint is usually that there is not enough background or personality in the characters. However, Coven exceeded my expectations with the characters.
The Art - I really enjoyed the art style! I think the artist did a great job of portraying mood throughout the book. The dark, creepy parts are what made this book for me!

What I Disliked
The Ending - Okay, I didn't really hate the ending, but it felt really underwhelming. It makes me wonder if there are going to be more volumes because the ending was a little too simple in my opinion. This story would work really well as a starting point, and I think there could be multiple volumes following these characters.

Overall Thoughts
By the end of the reading, I was happy I chose this for my Netgalley TBR this month. It was an enjoyable story that left me wanting more. 4.5/5 stars

Coven is a young adult graphic novel about four friends who begin dabbling in witchcraft to save an elm tree from being cut down, and accidentally summon a demon.

I really enjoyed this one. The main characters were all fleshed out enough to feel unique and we got a bit of backstory about each one. The illustrations were well done and pretty creepy in some parts, which was pleasantly surprising. I'm also a sucker for witchy stories so this didn't disappoint. Bonus points for characters having posters from The Craft and The Faculty on their walls!

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for this advanced reader copy!

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for an ARC of this graphic novel.

This was, for me, a very nostalgic read with a slightly modern twist.
And contains a ton of pop culture references, which partly adds to the nostalgia. References like: The Craft.

If you like stories about teen girls discovering magic, things going wrong and them trying to fix not only that but their friendship, you need to read this comic.

Coven was a really interesting graphic novel about female relationships, ecology, feminism and of course magic, it was a really diverse read too, so much representation of bodies, sexual orientation and it’s great to see, I loved the illustrations, they’re unique and eye catching and really adds to the story .

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A cute story of friendship, much in the vein of other "teenage witch" stories. Loved the subtle references to other media, like Riverdale, Type o Negative and horror films - it felt quite realistic in that sense. I saw the "twist" coming but it was very enjoyable as a one-shot comic, and would like to read more of these characters.

Thank you for the chance to read and review this comic.

Firstly, i received this work for free from the publisher for review. This graphic novel was one of the best I've read this year. The art was dramatic in contrasts, each character had a unique design, and the story was gripping (especially as a practicing witch).

One thing that I enjoyed was the diverse representations of characters in regards to body size, sexual orientation, family dynamics, and character interests and personalities. Diversity was great but a black and/or trans witch would have rounded out the group perfectly.

I loved seeing the dynamics of the four girls friendships, despite being unlikely friends they all have two things in common; they are witches and care about nature.

I recommend this graphic novel to any witch out there.

The art wasn't the greatest, but I enjoyed the overall experience. I kinda predicted the final twist but still was a good experience.

Coven is a graphic novel that follows 4 friends after they accidentally summon a demonic creature while doing small magic rituals. The plot was well thought out and organized, but I felt as though the characters and art were lacking. I'm not saying the characters are bad though because I really enjoyed the friendship dynamic they had. I just thought the writer was relying too much on popular troupes for characters, such as the goth one who has trouble relaying her emotions, or the characters were underdeveloped where we really knew little about them outside of the plot. The magic being used in this story felt unrealistic in that this wasn't based in any one real thing. It touched on a bunch of different cultures which I don't think invokes a feeling that this is serious magic. I liked that it was open ending because the story was well done and I would enjoy more of these characters to maybe be able to get to know them better. In terms of the art, it was alright and I liked the foreshadowing that the artist was able to incorporate into their illustrations. The backgrounds and the objects in the foreground were always beautiful, but the human characters body and facial proportions were a little off at times which really impacted my ability to enjoy the story. Overall, I'd say this was a solid 3.5 star read.

Unfortunately this one didn’t stand out to me. It was entertaining enough to warrant a 3 star review, but I felt like I’ve read this graphic novel about ten times before. The characters didn’t feel particularly developed and the plot felt overdone. I think the information we learn at the very end of the story could have been interesting but instead it felt rushed, and for that reason the overall story felt inconclusive.

This comic was okay. It read very Archie/Sabrina comics and at times felt like it could have been set in the 80s instead of the present day.
The characters didn't have all too much personality, and the plot was fun for a little episodic comic like this, however, I think it stretched out too much and did not need that many pages.
The reveal at the end was quite lackluster and unfounded.
