"Coven" features beautiful illustrations, but unfortunately, they seem to stem more from the background than from the characters themselves.
While the graphic novel is longer than many others, the story is heavily plot-focused. When we delve into the personal relationships of the girls, there is a distance that unfortunately isn't overcome in the book. The story doesn't delve enough into the personal relationships to make us care about them.
However, the story of the devil and witchcraft is filled with plot twists and is entertaining.

When 4 friends decide to take on a "ritual spell" to save their favorite -interconnected' tree all seems well until the realization that it was "too easy". Well that and now chaos seems to reign. The girls will have to work together to connect with those who are family, community, and of course the power or friendship and magic. Practical Magic, meets Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants...each girls unique story and powers combine to defeat the powers of evil and unite them deeper as friends...and possibly something more.
The graphics are gorgeous, the suspense and story was wonderful. Worth the read just to look at the beautiful color and art work.
4 out of 5 stars.
Thank you to Taous Merakchi and Da Coffee Time, along with NetGalley for the read in exchange for a review.
Coven was a delightful graphic novel following an exciting and intriguing group of teens exploring their first foray into witchcraft. With a style reminiscent of Jen Woodall and a story like Liz Suburbia, Coven is a gritty exploration of the lives of queer youth with the exciting addition of magic all throughout. --Not only was the story a joy to read, but the antagonist was exciting and had my heart racing all throughout. The entire cast of characters was unique and brought something special to the story. Overall this is definitely a book I would recommend.
Witches! Magic! Chaos!
Imagine you and your friends are trying to save an old tree. But all the protests are not working and you're about to fail and it looks like the tree is about to be cut down. That's when you start a ritual. At first, it seems like everything went alright. But then you are noticing that something is off because your coven gets nightmares, illusions, etc...
It seems like you invited a demon. Can you finish him before he finishes you?
That's basically the plot of this comic. In Coven, there are four youngling witches who dabble in magic. And through an "accident", they get haunted by a demon.
The story is well-written and the art is simple but nonetheless stunning. I'd really love to see how their adventure continues.
