[Thank you NetGalley and Canelo Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Just Like That.]
In this book we follow Jess, an events manager from Edinburgh who is on top of her game. Unfortunately, her brother becomes ill and due to the poor support system that she has from her family, she is put in a position where she has to take a step back from work so that she can help with is recovery. Being taken off big projects is a bitter pill to swallow, and the low profile jobs that her company now have her working on don't excite her. Luckily, the zoo her company send her to is home to the very handsome but very grumpy head keeper, Nick. They don't see eye to eye from the start, but it's not long before their relationship starts to grow.
I'm sad to say that this book was not for me. I enjoyed the Edinburgh setting, it's nice to see my home city represented. And I enjoyed the scenes with animals; the focus on the importance of conservation made me want to visit my local zoo to show my support. But those are the only positives I can find. I found Jess and Nick to be quite unlikeable, Jess in particular came across as unreasonable sometimes. I also had issues with the dialogue which felt unnatural at points, and the progression of Jess and Nick's relationship which felt rushed.
However, I'm confident that there are a lot of people that would really enjoy Just Like That, and this is perhaps more or an 'it's not you, it's me' situation. If you love enemies to lovers, rooting for the underdog (in this case, a struggling zoo with adorable animals), and a career driven female lead, then check out this book.
This book was enjoyable, and easy to read, but maybe a bit too long.
I appreciated the character development we get to see in Jess when her life is flipped upside down due to her brother’s health and she has to rewrite her plans. The relationship that grows between nick (the grumpy head keeper) and her was drawn out and played out organically.
If you like animals, a grumpy MC, and a career-driven FMC, I think you will really enjoy this.
I loved the challenges that Jess goes through, having to learn how to be a carer and how to also live her life at the same time. But I didn't love how quickly it goes from enemies to lovers. I was really enjoying their banter before they got together and would have loved to see more of it.
Overall, this was a super cute and easy read! It's filled with some great characters, including Rana the sun bear, and you'll have it read within a day!!
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book.
Thank you Netgalley and Canelo Publising for sponsoring this read. This book was an emotional read. But i like that it somehow didn't feel like a depressing. The story of Jess the selfess sister that world was turned upside down when her brother had a stroke which caused her to learn to be a caretakers so that she could take care of him. This book really made me realize that you life can change in one day. Nick's character wasn't as warm or welcoming. But after being hurt i get it he was only protecting himself. This book is a heartfelt read. One that everyone can enjoy.
A very emotional book . It talks about health problems and the complications . Jess is a event manager in a very big company in Edinburgh and while she expects to get a promotion her brother has a stroke and she is the person who is going to be his carer . Because of that she has to work less hours and days , so her boss gives her no big events but low cases events . Now her new event is at East Lothian Wildlife Park . One of the staff is Nick the head keeper the man she meet after she learn about her brother outside the hospital and she thought he was hiting on her . Now they have to work together so the park will be able to stay open . With the help of Rana a sun bear Jess and Nick will came closer but when she learns about his divorce she keeps from him the situation about her brother . Will jess be able to save the park and be honest to Nick ?
I received this book from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own .
A heavier romance than most, this book dealt with family, illness and recovery, caring responsibilities, and relationship breakdowns. It was a very real read and it’s impossible not to empathise with Jess, who is struggling with adapting to unexpectedly caring for her brother who faces a long recovery journey, a change in her work responsibilities thanks to discriminating boss, and the stress and loneliness of it all. She’s understandably feeling unlike herself and is trying to face the world alone to protect her brother and the hot but grumpy head keeper, Nick. As romance blossoms, Jess tries to juggle her work, caring responsibilities, dating and secrets. It’s safe to say everything was bound to implode spectacularly but it does all work out in the end. A little communication and honesty can definitely go a long way.
It was great to see both disability rep and carer rep in this book, and for it to show some of the difficulties faced by the person with a disability and the person who is caring for them. It definitely gave me more insight of the physical and emotional toll but serves as a wonderful reminder that there’s more to people than one thing. Jess is more than a carer and while finding the balance is hard, she eventually realises she is not alone and that taking care of herself is also important.
I loved learning more about the different animals in the wildlife park and the threats to them, as well as seeing Jess interacting with them - and with Nick - as well as delving into the financial strain on smaller wildlife parks like this. This book was definitely an eye opener on several levels!
I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.
This book was an easy read. The writing style was good. Jess & Nick's first encounter may not have been pleasent, but now they have to encounter each other on a daily basis because they find out that they work for the same company. The enemies to lovers part was good and the book was going on well until the 87% mark. I wasn't really invested after the part as much as I had been before tbh. It was a good read but I did not like Jess and her judgemental attitude, she single handedly fucked up her life by complicating simple things tbh. Though the last chapter was very cute and blissful.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review
For a fun and lighthearted romance read, you will definitely feel some emotions as well. We follow along with Jess and she navigates her life being changed by a family crisis. It was great to see her have some growth in such a short time. The characters were enjoyable and the book flowed smoothly.
Well, I absolutely loved this book. This is my first book by this author and was happy to see she has a backlist I can dive into this weekend. What I loved most about this book is the subject matter. This is a romantic comedy, but it also deals with a serious life situation (in this case it is Jess, the main character, who is suddenly forced into a caretaker role for a family member). On the surface, this is heavy stuff, but it adds to the story, gives it credibility and actually lends well to the "rom" and "com" components. I call this REAL LIFE, and I am here for it. I found the writing strong, the characters had depth and warmth and were funny at times, and the story flowed nicely. Too many books on the market are just not believable to me. This one spoke to me in content, but also the writing. Very pleased to find this book and author. Thank you to the publisher, author and Net Galley for the read and 5 stars from me.
Just Like That was exactly what it promised to be - a perfect feel good romance. As someone who has worked in events in the past I had so much fun reading about Jess’ work and how she was navigating it. In this book there were several times where I wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake her asking what she was thinking as she avoided telling Nick things during their relationship. But that frustration paid off with a super sweet and well written ending. I loved that Jess made mistakes that seems incredibly human and realistic for a person who is going through a life change like becoming a caregiver for her brother.
I loved Nick as a mmc, I always love a grumpy but is actually a sweetheart on the inside male lead. And I loved the world that was built in this book. I want to go to this fictional wild life park and be friends with the staff.
Overall this book was a really sweet closed door romance and a wonderful pick me up.
Thank you to NetGalley, Canelo and Nina Kaye for providing me a e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
"Just Like That" by Nina Kaye is a heartwarming and captivating story that delves into themes of family, career, and unexpected connections. Jess is on top of her game in her events management job in Edinburgh, with a promising career ahead of her. However, her world comes crashing down when her brother has a sudden stroke, and she steps in as his carer without hesitation. But her boss doesn't understand her situation and demotes her to managing low-end events, including a small animal park in need of fundraising.
What follows is a delightful tale of Jess's journey as she navigates her new role and clashes with the head keeper, Nick, who is frustrated with her squeamishness. However, as they work together to save the animals of East Lothian Wildlife Park, they find common ground despite their differences.
Kaye's writing is engaging and filled with humor, making this a delightful and enjoyable read. The characters are well-developed and relatable, with Jess's challenges as a caretaker and Nick's desire for a baggage-free life adding depth to the story. The setting of the animal park adds a unique and charming element to the plot, making it an interesting backdrop for the unfolding romance between Jess and Nick.
Overall, "Just Like That" is a heartwarming tale that explores the complexities of family, career, and unexpected connections. It's a story of resilience, finding common ground, and overcoming challenges, with a touch of humor and romance that will leave readers captivated until the very end. Highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance and heartwarming stories with relatable characters.
Very much looking forward to reading, acquisition, and sharing Just Like that with our readers. I will be sharing a full review and thoughts, but what immediately struck me was the premise about being a caregiver for someone that had a stroke and the profound effects it has on one’s life. I was a cared for my father for over 10 years when he suffered a massive stroke so I can deeply relate to our protagonists plight. I cannot wait to share more soon and I’m so happy there is a book like this out their especially for us young caregivers to feel less alone.
