I enjoyed the way it was written; it was quite engaging and fast-paced which I think this story needed but I was a bit confused with the overall story. So even though I enjoyed the tone and the pace I can’t really say much more about the story.
This book is a RIDE.
It starts out as a kind of family drama following three generations of women and each of their lives/circumstances including: Candelaria- an 86 year old grandmother, Lucia- Candelaria’s daughter, and Lucia’s three daughters- Candy- who is a recovering addict and now dealing with a strange pregnancy, Bianca- who is an archeologist who has returned home after sleeping with her adviser, and Paola- who has been presumed dead after fleeing home with her abusive boyfriend and has now returned as ‘Zoe’ who is involved in a wellness cult.
We flit back and forth between all of these characters and the messy, complex situations they find themselves in and the complicated relationships they have with eachother as magical realism and weird happenings start seeping into the story.
I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to spoil anything but after an earthquake, shit starts to get kind of wild including cannibalism, the undead, visions, multiple murders, a magical rock and three generations of women navigating the end of the world.
For the most part I really enjoyed this book but at around the 70% mark it just kind of lost me abit and I wasn’t as interested as I was in the first part of the book.
For fans of morally grey female characters, magical realism, stories centred around generations of women and familial relations, and a new take on the end of the world novel- I can see a lot of people enjoying this and can’t wait to see what others think!
