Not what I expected and gave me major fanfiction vibes.

For fans of Sailor Moon, Miraculous Ladybug, & Card Captor Sakura. I could see how Noelle’s character stemmed from Miraculous Ladybug inspo from a glowing fox-head that transformed them into someone else & the mirror that captured the dark cloud with the finding peace catchphrase. Meanwhile, names were drawn from Sailor Moon, such as Mamoru.
I’ll admit for being the first short novel in a series it isn’t bad, but it’s a little rough. We’re given a lot of action and drama as one would expect from magical girl shows, but very little context to correlate and emotionally connect to the characters and events. There were a lot of moments that I felt would’ve been more enjoyable had they been more fleshed out vs. churned out quickly (I.e. before the battle, the car scene at the end).
Overall, it was fun and definitely fits into one of my favorite genres (magical girl), I’d like to read future installments in hopes to see if maybe we can get more backstory and see what happens to all the characters in the future.
2.5 rounded down

Magical girl isn’t my usual genre, but I do like fantasy and monsters, and thought this sounded fun.
I know that with such a limited page count the plot needed to move quickly; however, with a seemingly complex world of magic and supernatural entities, some context and backstory was needed. Maybe things will be explained in future books, but with no worldbuilding and only 44 pages – most of which consisted of a fight scene, there wasn’t a lot of time to get invested.
Some of the ridiculous, over-the-top moments were amusing though - and the manga/anime inspiration was unmistakable. I could see this working really well as a graphic novel.
Match*Make Me a Vigilante has potential, it's just not for me.

This is a super cute short story, that is pure magical girl fun. This book is incredibly short, and the pace moves at a breakneck speed. You only learn some basics about the world before getting tossed into the action. The action scenes were well written, and it was self-evident that classic magical girl media inspired it. I honestly think this would make an excellent manga. The downside is that because the story is so short, it's a bit hamstrung by its lack of space to fully explain things. You only learn very bare bones about the world and the characters. Though, I am willing to forgive that slightly, since the author blurb says that this novella is "the first episode in the season" which is very clear in hindsight. Short of wish instead of being spread in several different novellas, they had been combined into one larger novel instead. The only other tiny nitpick is that I don't understand what the title has to do with the story, but that's just a minor thing that confused me personally. I already have my hands on the second novella, so I am curious to see how it continues!
Reading this novella felt like reading fanfiction for a show I haven’t watched. I’m familiar with the magical girl trope and enjoy some media in this genre, but this novella is almost entirely a fight scene between characters who are only barely introduced. It sounds like this is the first in an episodic series that may develop the characters more over time, and that the author is treating each book in the series as an episode of a show.
This book wasn’t for me, but I wish the author all the best. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
"Go, you mysterious, beautiful man!"
Thank you netgalley for allowing me to read this in return for an honesty review.
This really short book is a trip. A funny one that I was curious to read after the author stated this was inspired by Sailor Moon.
The reader is thrown right into the action with no build up, explanation, or details. You get more information from the summary then the actual story. I really wish there was more background so the reader could have some attachment to the characters or a better understanding of the scenes.
One must suspend reality, even in terms of a magical girl world, for this story.
Besides being super rushed with minimal details, nothing much happens. A small fight scene is the entire plot point?
I really wish this was more fleshed out, more things happened, and we had backstory. I will try the second one to see what happens next.
This was quick and entertaining while leaving me wanting more. I don't know why I thought this was a manga, and while it's not, this is inspired by manga. I really liked the witch and werewolf vibes that we have in this book, and I was also really into the teenage gossip vibes with the other characters. The plot is about Noelle, who is a witch and matchmaker, and her friend Mamoru who shifts into a werewolf.
I wish we had gotten more about the plot and Worldbuilding but given that it's a short story, I get why we got what we got. I liked the diversity I see already and would recommend it to those who like short stories and a quick and fun read.
Fury and Furry was an interesting read. While I appreciate a story with a werewolf and a novel with magic girl vibes, I think the format is the issue. 44 pages per book does not give the reader enough time to get invested in the world and to understand the monster of the week vibe from the book. I feel like the first 3 books should be one book or this could be a WebToon/ Graphic Novel. The shorter-form chapters work better for the aesthetic the author is going for. I don't say this to mean that the book is bad but I feel like the format prevents the story to stretch its wings. I'll consider reading the next 2 that come out but that's all I really have to say.
quirkily funny and entertaining.

Noelle was an amateur matchmaker at best. If she was being honest with herself, she was probably closer to a fan rooting for her favorite ships than a matchmaker.

this is a short little story that jumps between being utterly ridiculous that it becomes funny to being very relatable in a real life way.
which doesn’t seem like it should work at all, but somehow it does.
i think part of that is defiantly that the length of this is perfect for the story it tells.
it packs in typical teenage behavior, an action paced scene and ends in a nice rounded out way and all of that happens so fast that even the utterly absurd moments that should really work without being too stupid, so work because it’s not pages long of those moments but just at the most a couple of pages before moving on.
The very well done writing helps tie it all together beautifully. it’s easy to read but very well worded and manages to say a lot in very little. And was is being described is done well.

Inevitability, every star does, and it had seemed so much better to end their relationship before one of them got swallowed by the other on the way out.

and while i do wish the entire supernatural thing and how all that works would have been either better explained or at least made clear if that’s seen as normal or not - it’s okay for a short story with supernatural elements to not give all the details that i expect from a full length novel that clearly has the page count to give me all the details, where as a short story clearly doesn’t - especially one like this with under 50 pages!
i highly recommend this if you want some supernatural quirky fun and a quick read but is still nothing you will forget right away after finishing either!
I’m not sure why I expected this to be a spicy monster romance- but it is not. It is a short story with some magical shifters that packs quite a punch. There’s a witchy teenage girl who reads tarot cards and rollerblades around trying to remove a curse of sorts from her friend - who is obsessing over his ex. There’s also a teenage boy who shifts into a werewolf any time he is hugged. I think the point of the story was this oddball collection of characters working together to remove the evil spirit possessing Aksel to harass his ex gf. Interesting- not quite what I was expecting.
