I'm a known fan of the Science Comics series, so when I saw a history themed comic series I was intrigued. And this book does not disappoint. This is no surface history. It digs deep into the musical and cultural influences. It looks at influential figures and how the social climate affected the development of hip-hop. It is quite text heavy, so this isn't a lazy read by any means. But if you have even a passing interest in hip-hop or in the changes in musical genres over time, this is well worth the effort to read.
This is a fantastic addition to the History Comics series! Readers will be excited for this new installment. I did find this title to be more text heavy that previous works in the series, but the story was still informative, diverse and enjoyable. Recommended purchase.
In this issue of History Comics, Jaspar and his daughter Aaliyah explore the world of hip-hop. Jaspar takes Aaliyah around Brooklyn to teach her about the history and culture of hip-hop. I think this comic did a great job covering a bunch of different facets of hip-hop from its origins to things like fashion! Williams also does a great job including a bunch of different artists. I learned so much!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
#NetGalleyARC I loved this book. I love the combination of the history of hip hop and comic format, it worked so well! I learned so much and was proud of myself for knowing a lot about hip hop’s history. This series is such a great one for all libraries and readers!
History Comics graphics are a popular series for a reason. They are always well-researched, have a narrator(s) who keep the story moving, and are informative as well as entertaining. This book is no exception and I loved how in-depth the author went in breaking down the roots of hip hop, and showed the reader how it evolved. This topic is well-suited for a graphic novel because the reader can see examples of style, movement, and how these elements all go into the sound portion of the equation.
In the narrative, a young girl is schooled by her father on how hip hop came to be, and she is able to inform him of how she streams and uses Youtube. Together they see that so many songs that her dad likes are classics or have been sampled into music she likes now.
I highly recommend this for anyone interested in music, history, or both!
