I started reading this book but then put it on pause because I wanted to back and start the Harry Hole series from the beginning, and I am so happy that I did. I feel like because I got to enjoy the series from the start I got to enjoy the series, and this book so much more!
There are some dark themes included throughout the series and this book is no exception. Overall though I really enjoyed this book, and continue to keep reading from this author moving forward.
I think the author has become better with age and writing experience and certainly this latest book has every element of a detective crime novel that you could want including several diversionary characters,
The Killing Moon by Jo Nesbo
When I requested this novel from Penguin Random House Canada and NetGallery I was drawn to the book by its synopsis. I enjoy reading suspense/thrillers and this book delivered on both counts. What I had not realized that it was book 13 in the Harry Hole detective series. As The Killing Moon was my first novel by Jo Nesbo it was not long before I knew it was not the book to start with. There were connections between the characters that I was missing, for example why Harry felt as he did and why he made the choices he did.
Harry Hole was a down and out detective from Oslo living in an alcoholic haze in Los Angles when he is drawn back to Oslo to help his friend, to find a missing girl and solve a murder. The story is well written, and it is full of twists and turns, and it keeps the reader guessing right to the end. It was also horrific; chilling and it was much more gruesome than I had anticipated. Enough so, to give me nightmares from the well written imagery and scenes in the novel.
This novel is just too dark for me. If you are not bothered by cannibalism and acts of violence, then this may be the book for you.

The 13th novel in the Harry Hole series and there’s no sign of Nesbø letting up! You’d think after 13 books, reading about the same drunk and corrupt cop would get redundant, but Nesbø’s story telling is so gripping and engaging that he manages to keep the series fresh and entertaining. And the plot in this one is so bonkers and unique that I was enthralled. I struggled with this one a bit simply because I read the last book in the series three years ago and I forgot a lot of what happened. And with that being said, if you want to experience Hole for yourself do not just jump in and start here. But I’ve been here for the long haul and will continue to be if number 14 rolls around.
I didn’t realize this was a book in a series of them so I was a little lost but I enjoyed the concept, given it was my first Jo Nesbo book. Now I fear if I go backward and read others, it will be confusing but i just might try.
Long book that kept my interest but I couldn’t wait for it to be over.. I thought I figured it out but took me by surprise. I love Harry Hole and his world. I just don’t think he was at his best here.
What was I thinking starting another series? Especially starting at the 13th book in the series. It wasn't a good idea, but not for the reasons you might think. The problem is that Killing Moon is a good book. It's good enough that I want to go back and read books 1-12, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to do so anytime soon.
I'm not sure if all the previous books are like this, but wow, there is a lot of drama surrounding Harry Hole. From what I gather, he's been through so much and it's a wonder how he keeps going. I can't help but wonder how he manages to survive all the dangerous situations he finds himself in. Also, how has his liver not given out yet? It's amazing how he continues to function despite all the abuse his body has endured. This book is truly a testament to his resilience.
Furthermore, I must say that this book delves deep into some dark themes. It doesn't shy away from addressing heavy topics such as drug addiction and the devastating consequences it can have, as well as the horrors of sexual abuse. The author doesn't hold back in depicting the gritty reality of physical assault and the trauma it inflicts on its victims. And let's not forget the subject of rape, which is handled with sensitivity and honesty. If any of these topics are triggering for you, it might be best to skip this particular installment.
So, while I may have regretted starting the series at book 13, I can't deny that Killing Moon is a captivating read. It's a book that pulls no punches, offering a chilling and thought-provoking exploration of the darkest corners of human nature. Whether you're a long-time fan of Harry Hole or just discovering this series, this book is sure to leave a lasting impact.
Thank you Netgalley and Knopf Publishers for my advanced readers’ copy.
This is the thirteenth book in the Harry Hole series. I still have from the 9th to the 12th to read, but I think for me, I've seen enough of the disgraced detective who is working as a consultant trope. It was ok for a book or two, but now most of the Nordic Noir authors are copying this trope and I'm tired of it.
The book itself was filled with the same action and atmospheric vibe Nesbo is so good at. But I was confused for a good part of the book because of the formatting issues. I even listened to it on audio, and honestly, that was even worse for me. I plan to read the three books before this one to see if it makes more sense that way, otherwise this is my last Harry Hole novel. Even if the author decides to continue with the series.
That being said, those of you who enjoy long series and rebellious, problematic detectives, then i recommend it. Otherwise, you can probably stop the series after the tenth book or so.
Harry Hole is back in book 13 of Nesbo’s series. Unfortunately I found this to be an even slower burn than usual for me and a bit rambling in narration. While my mind wasn’t working well with this latest book, those who adore Harry will likely enjoy this latest Nordic Noir adventure.
I managed to get half way thru it. The story was about murders with parasities that I'm not comfortable reading about.
Killing Moon has revealed to me an author that I must continue pursuing. I am a huge fan of Scandinavian mystery/thrillers and Jo Nesbo is one fine example,
Jp Nesbo's books are always great and this one is no disappointment. (Warning though: some of the violence is gruesome.)
This is 13th in Jo Nesbo's extraordinary thriller series starring Harry Hole, an alcoholic, angst-ridden loner who was also an exceptional cop when he worked as a Crime Squad Police Detective in Oslo, Norway.
As this episode opens, Harry has been fired, has lost his wife, and is at rock bottom, drinking himself to oblivion in Los Angeles. He befriends elderly actress Lucile in a bar there and helps her against mobsters.
He's pressured by the mob boss into solving a serial killer case back in Norway.
As always, Nesbo's intricate plot has wheels within wheels, little is as it seems, and it's never over when you think it's over - a must read for mystery fans.
I absolutely loved this book!! I couldn’t put it down.
I just loved all the characters. I highly recommend this book.
Wow! It's been a while since I've read a suspense involving such a brilliant serial killer. His method, his reasoning, and the way his past fits into it all make for such a thrilling ride. Harry Hole a detective specializing in serial killers is ready to give up on life, binging at a bar willing to drink himself to death he meets an elderly lady that needs his help. He begins putting the pieces of his life back together, while on the hunt for a brilliant murderer, in the hopes of saving her life. With a tight deadline can he figure out how Prim is operating in time? Full of non stop suspense, this is one novel you won't be able to put down no matter how grisly it gets.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a coplimentray copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
Harry Hole is back! I love this series and was so excited to see a new book! This book could be read as a stand aloone, but the series is so good that you should read all of them to get the backstory and the feel for the characters. I love the side characters and how they fit seamlessly into each book.
Harry is down and out, still reeling from the death of hs wife and struggling with sobriety. Harry is once again called upon to solve a vicious murder ad find a vile murder, with the hopes of clearig the name of a very rich man who has agreed to pay him an exorbitant amount if he helps him successfully. This killer is depraved and the subject matter was very dark but it was a great book. Harry is no longer with police force and this causes him to create his own dream team to help him solve this crime. I loved the team and their dynamic.
The novel opens with Harry at the lowest point in his life sitting in a bar in Los Angeles determined to drink himself to death. His wish is almost granted, however, in doing a favour for the individual who saves his life, he finds himself back in Oslo investigating apparently linked murders with his own team.
This is the second Harry Hole novel I’ve read so far and can safely say I enjoyed it immensely—particularly the twisting and turning plot. The murderer is sinister, the red herrings thrown into the mix heightened the suspense and I could not predict the outcome. I was engaged with the characters right to the end. This novel did not disappoint--it's kind of a creepy yet entertaining book..
I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have not read any Harry Hole books but after reading this one, I'll be looking for Nesbo's previous novels. This was a great thriller that kept me engaged from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Harry returns to Norway to help pay his friend's debt in the US. This time, his return to Europe is to find proof to clear a rich man (who is paying him an exorbitant amount of money) from the murders of two young women.
The story has many twists and turns, with Harry working alongside ex-colleagues in the police, friends, and lovers while still investigating independently.
Note that Scientific research, rape, child abuse, murder, alcohol and drug use are all part of the story.
I would have liked more interaction between Harry and his US friend to make the investigation more urgent.
The book ends with a hint to the next, and I can't wait to read it.
I couldn’t get through this one. I enjoyed The Bat. But this one just seemed slower and had many characters that it was hard to stay with it. I don’t know if it’s just because I didn’t read all the Harry Hole book.s, but this was my least favourite so far!
