This is a book I will absolutely be gifting to every kid and baby I know!
The perfect mix of Canadiana and kiddie cute, this is a huge win for the kids and baby book space!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
I loved the choice of song titles for each letter of the alphabet but was disappointed in the illustrations. I only really enjoyed one of the four illustrators and found it jarring to have the style change so drastically and frequently. I would have much preferred one consistent illustrator, even if it was one of the styles I didn't really enjoy.
I didn't understand the illustrations for the letters K and M, so I'm not sure that they will make sense to young readers. For the letter K, I got the impression that the adult offering the apple was a stranger and the page was about stranger danger / don't accept candy or food from strangers, but then it appears that the adult was the kids parent. They seemed scared of them, but I think the intention was that they were sad they dropped their ice cream? And for M, I'm not sure why a kid crying and adults laughing is Music at Work, I think a family singalong would have made much more sense - maybe I'm missing something obvious but I just found the tone of those two pages to be off.
This alphabet book is really for parents who are fans of the Canadian band, Tragically Hip. Each letter is represented by a song title. In some cases the letter is buried in a word in the title, like for x and z. Different illustrators did the art so it’s not all consistent. It will be fun for families familiar with the music but will probably fall flat for kids who aren’t fans since it doesn’t appear to make any sense without that context.
I read a temporary digital version of this book for review.
Growing up The Tragically Hip were a huge part of my childhood as my dad has always been a massive fan. If you’re from Canada you probably have heard of this iconic Canadian band. My husband (American) was so confused why Canada seems to love them so much! I didn’t have an answer for him other than “we just do!” This book cleverly uses a song title to go along with each letter of the alphabet. Although my kids were entertained I think this book is made more for fans like my dad who will definitely be getting a copy when this becomes available! I’m sure he will be more than thrilled to introduce each of the songs mentioned to the kids :)
This tragically hip book of ABCs is one of the funniest and cutest ABC books I’ve read in a long time. The artwork in this book is super hipster-y and I loved it so much.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
So you've had a baby in Canada - now what? Open up this gem of a book for your baby's introduction to The Tragically Hip. Enjoy the very Canadian illustrations and references to our favourite Hip songs.
This is really cute! More for adult fans of The Hip, of course -- I don't think that kids will 'get it' as each letter connects to a song -- but it would be a great gift for grown-ups expecting or parenting a little one.
Super cute abc book! As a mama in the season of board books, and a lifelong Hip fan, this one hit me right in the feels and I can't wait to add a physical copy to our collection to share with my children.
Having so many contributors took away from my enjoyment a little bit as I found the writing and artwork to lack continuity throughout which is why I gave it 3 stars. I would have enjoyed it more if the illustrations had a bit more "flow"
What a lovely tribute to The Tragically Hip! The illustrations featuring Canadian wildlife and nods to the Hip are so beautiful. Some of the letters aren't accurately represented, X is not for Luxury, for example, so this would be my only complaint (though I can understand how difficult some letters are when there isn't a song title starting with it. ) I wish there was a little bit more, maybe a lyric on each page from the song featured. :)
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books and NetGalley for this ARC!
My kiddo is at the age where she’s OBSESSED with ABC books, so I had to grab this to read with her. The illustrations were fun, silly and cute, and the ABC lyrics/ words, etc were interesting and not your average ABC book. I didn’t get all the tragically hip references, but we enjoyed the book all the same!
Thanks NetGalley for the arc, all thoughts and opinions are mine.
Adorable pictures, and a lovely walk down memory lane with all things alphabetically Hip.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC.
Oh my goodness, what a great introduction to great music for little Canadians! Keep the music alive! ! This makes me happy, and a little sad too! Wonderful!!
The Tragically Hip ABC is a delightfully quirky book that will appeal to all ages. The charming illustrations featuring Canadian wildlife will draw children in, while many adults will find nostalgia in the band's familiar and much loved songs. These pages will evoke vivid memories of the Hip, and be a warm hug for all Canadians. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for an ARC.
Super cute and beautifully illustrated children's book!
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC!
If you’re a Tragically Hip fan, you need to buy this for the little people in your life! The illustrations are adorable and totally made me smile. 😁
The only reason that I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is that there are two styles of illustrations in the book and I much preferred the beavers to the other animals. The illustrations lack consistency throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley and @tundrabooks for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. 🙏🏻🥰

I must not be tragically hip because I did not get this book at all. I wanted to enjoy it, but it just went over my head.
I would love this as a coffee table book! Some of the letter associations weren't exactly suited for children (x is for Luxury), but the art is wonderful and I think it would be fun to have a listen-along while reading

I, unfortunately, haven't listened too much to The Tragically Hip, though this book makes me want to. That said I love the images, the Canadian-ism, and my husband grinned with it. Thanks for letting me look it over.
I think adults will get this book and enjoy it more than their children will. The illustrations in this book are fun and unique. My son enjoyed the pictures, but wasn’t really engaged with the text. the book was cute, just not what I was expecting.
This was an odd book but the title got me! The illustrations throughout made sense to what the text was saying, but it’s a no for me.
