This was so stinking CUTE. It was such a sweet little story about a boy and his dad going on a hike to experience nature. I think it's a really great story for families to read together to encourage them to get outside and go for a hike, to really take in all that nature has to offer. I really enjoyed this.
I read Leo on a Hike with my youngest grandson (4 YO) and he enjoyed the story, even though Leo is a bit younger than him. This is a board book that is about exploring nature. Leo and daddy head off on a hike where they notice several things until Leo wants down to explore on his own. Leo notices little things that they may have missed while up on daddy's back. This is a story about exploring the world, but also about daddy and son bonding. The illustrations are vibrant, colourful and full of sensory awareness. A great book you little ones, perfect for a pre-school classroom.
A cute little story with fun pictures. Very toddler friendly. Great beginning read that every child with love!
We love easy read-alouds for our little ones. Those perfect calming but engaging stories that become a household treasure. This is that kind of book. In this little adventure Leo is going on a hike with Daddy and they get to look at all the nature along the way. Little Leo loves the hike and can’t wait to keep exploring. Enjoying every moment like the snack outdoors and details on the rocks Leo begins to get tired. This is a great book for those needed calm down moments. You will love the colorful and heartwarming illustrations that help bring this story to life. We received this as an ARC thanks to NetGalley but we will be buying it for our home and to share with family.
This little book is adorable! The illustrations are so sweet and show the tender, loving relationship between Leo and his Daddy. The story focuses on a simple day of nature exploring and includes sensory details and a sense of wonder. This story will encourage little ones to head out on their own adventure.
This is nice short read about a father and son out on a hike. This would be great to read to children before going on a family hike. Even better if using it as a guide for a scavenger hunt by trying to find some of the things that show up within the book.
A fun read about how kids vs adults see the world around them. In the book Leo discovers so many wonderful different things than his dad does on their hikes and how talking about it all opens up everyone's eyes to the world around them. I also enjoyed the bonding that happened throughout the book with this dialog of discovery.
Leo on a Hike is another adventure in the Leo series. In this adventure, Leo and his dad go on a hike into the trail and get to see nature up close! It is a fun place to explore. Leo gets to see lots of interesting new things. At the end of the day, he goes home happy and content!
This is a fun adventure book appropriate for young kids. The illustrations are adorable! Little kids will love this series of books!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
The latest title in Anna McQuinn's Leo Can series, Leo on a Hike, presents the adventure of a young boy and his father as they trek along the path and learn about their world together. Whether it's the ducks wading in the pond or the impression a hiking boot has left in the mud, Leo and his father observe their surroundings with curiosity and awe, eager to grow their understanding. Furthered by Ruth Hearson's tranquil illustrations, Leo on a Hike remains a captivating story for those with short attention spans while its simplicity proves a perfect addition to a library for early readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Charlesbridge for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Leo on a Hike, by Anna McQuinn, Illustrated by Ruth Hearson
Leo on a Hike is a part of Leo’s board book series, where Leo explores his world with his Daddy, Mommy, and sister too.
This time Leo goes on a hike with his daddy, straight into the wildlife and on a trail. Together with his father, Leo packs up his binoculars, magnifying glasses and his explorer boots and gets set for the adventure.
On his way he investigates little, tiny bugs, examines the forest greens, and animals squishing his way through the mud. As Leo and his father scavenge through the wildlife, they collect treasures from the woods, and head home as happy souls. Toddlers will like the illustrations and love the text, as they relate with Leo and his father in this charming board book.
This short and sweet picture book gives wonderful examples to kids about things they would see on a hike. Adults tend to see the big things, but little Leo notices small things with texture. My 6 month old son, who is starting to focus on little details in books, enjoyed zoning in on the little details in the illustrations. Cute, simple story to teach about nature and keeping our eyes open for little things.
I received a complementary copy of the ebook of this story from the publisher and NetGalley. I was not asked to leave a positive review.
As usual leo takes the day by storm! Great read along to introduce hiking to your toddler. Go out and explore just like leo.
This board book follows Leo on a hike with his father discovering all the beauty nature has to offer. The pictures are colorful with objects the child may recognize. The text is simplistic and age appropriate.
This would be a great book to read to a child before going on your own nature walk.

I really liked this book and it has some lovely illustrations.
The book is well written and easy to follow, the descriptions used are wonderful and really suite the story.
The story is about a son and his father and their bond which increases over a hiking trip.
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and it is a lovely book!
Such a sweet story with lovely sensory details. As a big proponent of nature conservation, I love seeing books with kids of color enjoying the outdoors, the exposure and representation is so important and needed!
A father and son go on a hike. I loved all of the little things in the illustration that are recognizable for babies/toddlers like a duck, apple, leaf, footprints, etc. 1 sentence per page makes it a quick read for short attention spans.
The illustrations are very cute and well done.
I love the “Lola” books but hadn’t gotten a chance to read Leo’s! This was a fun short board book that captured the feeling of a refreshing nature walk with someone you love. I especially love all of the descriptive words added in. They build vocabulary without being too heavy-handed about it.
This is a sweet book about a dad & his son exploring the outdoors. The illustrations are great and the descriptive language is wonderful! A overall great book for toddlers!!
Thank you, Charlesbridge, for the advance reading copy.
I love this book so much! All the warmth of a father and son bonding over hiking. The book is filled with colourful cosy illustrations. Beautiful!
A great simple story to read to your little one and get them excited for the outdoors. Leo’s stories are always wonderful with inviting illustrations.
