Set during Word War One, Phoebe is a nursing volunteer in France, nursing soldiers injured on the front line. Her sister Celia is a nurse at a Prisoner of war Camp in the Channel Islands. Their parents and brother were killed in a Zeppelin attach leaving the sisters with only each other. Both are immersed in their lives and when love finds them it's not what they were looking for. Is happiness possible in a time of war? Phoebe makes a great friend in a doctor colleague's sister and spends happy days recovering from an injury with her in Cornwall. When it matters the sisters are there for each other. An easy read, some expressions seem more American than English prompting me to wonder if the author is American? For example, snow "sticking" rather than "lying" but otherwise an authentic read. #netgalley #ThePoppySisters

Set in world war one, this story is about two sisters who lost the rest of their family and worked as nurses, one in France, and one in a POW camp. They both meet and fall in love with patients, which is totally against the rules, and it seems impossible that either love could have a future. A story about grief and love

Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for the chance to read this book.

This is my first book by Deborah Carr. I found the authors writing style easy to read and felt drawn into the emotion of the book.

The Poppy Sister's is a fictional story about two English sisters serving as nurses during WW1. They are both heartbroken after the loss of the rest of their family in a bombing and find solace in their work.
Celia is a trained nurse working in a prisoner of war camp and Phoebe is a volunteer nurse sent to France. Both women find love in unexpected places and face difficulties and heartbreaks in those relationships. Along the way they are blessed by new friendships that help them through the darkness of the war years.

The story is full of love and drama but as expected with a romance novel there are happy endings in sight for the sisters. An enjoyable historical romance.

Set during WWI, Pheobe is a a volunteer at a hospital for allies in France, and Celia is a nurse for prisoners of war in the Channel Islands. The girls are sisters, who have lost the rest of their family during a bombing raid, after which they both decide they wish to help others.

Their stories run parallel, with both girls falling for a patient in their care. It is a nice enough story, but for me it was too repetitive. Plenty of interesting historical references, and I really like the insight into the prisoners of war on the Channel Islands.

A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.

An historical romance set during WW1 in France and the Channel Islands. Two sisters have lost their home and family and decide to become voluntary nurses. They have different experiences and are also very different characters. However, after a few chapters I floundered somewhat not finding much interest in the story. There is plenty of girly gossip, romance and letters between the sisters. Enjoyable if you like this type of woman's fiction.

I have to say this story was a bit repetitive which made it hard for me to finish reading it. I struggled on though the story just seemed to be drawn out way too much.
Overall, a ok read but not one I would read again.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.,

A historical fiction with alot of romance thrown in by an author with many romance genre books behind her. The sisters in the story are both working with wounded soldiers, one with Axis, one with Allies. Ms Carr shows us the stress and hardships suffered by medical staff and patients in a war where there was no daily support. The story is touching. Each sister must decide how much her efforts are helping and how much more they are willing to give to support the war.

The great war, the war to end all wars, that is what the WW1 was named. This is based on two sisters who are nursing the injured men but both in different ways. . Very well written and researched and interesting to read. Great read, 5stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this ARC

Touching historical fiction

Two sisters, dealing with the loss of their family to an air strike, choose a similar path, caring for hospitalized. Both form attractions for a patient, and both are faced with challenges in their relationships.

I liked the story, admired the strong female characters. Light on the more terrible effects of war, more weighted to the romantic side. Well written and fast paced.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

I have never really been a fan of historical novels, but this one from Deborah Carr has changed my mind. It is well researched and written and is a beautiful book.

Branching out from my typical ww2 set novels I enjoyed The Poppy Sisters by Deborah Carr. I really liked the two sisters perspectives and would enjoy a second novel continuing their story. The biggest factor keeping this novel from a 5 start rating for me was just to many unrealistic coincidences specifically in the ending of it.

Thank you to the Author, Harper Collins and Netgalley for the eARC

Two sisters still grieving the loss of their parents and sibling in a bombing join the WW1 war effort. Phoebe is a Voluntary Aid Detachment nursing volunteer in France, and Celia is a Nurse in a Prisoner of War camp in Jersey. The story evokes the despair and distress of the two sides of the war, lightened with rare moments of laughter. Forbidden romance is this engaging story's central focus, making it compelling. I like the characterisation, the historical detail and the overriding ethos of love conquering all.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

Thank you for the chance to read this ARC in return for my honest opinion.

I had not read any books by this author before but as I love historical fiction specially set within the World Wars this one piqued my interest.

It was the story of two sisters and their experiences in different areas of nursing in WW1 - one on the battlefields the other in a Prisoner of War facility on the Channel Islands.
Both had romances in the different circumstances both knew this would be frowned upon.
To put anymore would give too many spoilers.

I found the style of writing very disjointed - it wasn’t the alternating chapters for me but the length of these chapters. Just as one part of the story evolved then the chapter would end and it would revert to the other sister. However the story didn’t always pickup when that chapter ended. This has made the story very disjointed for me and slow to read. I often read a book that piques my interests within a few days but this one has taken me ages.

Having said that the book seems well researched and maybe it was just this writing style was not for me

Thank you for allowing me to review this book. I found it to be a very easy read that I was keen to finish. It tells the story of two sisters Celia and Pheobe during the 1st World War. They have lost their parents and brother when their home was bombed. Celia is a nurse at a POW camp on Jersey and Pheobe is a VAD at a hospital for injured soldiers in England. As they cope with their grief and work they meet young men. As the war continues they face many challenges.
The story is well written and the conditions of the time well described. I had sympathy for these young women and can only imagine how hard it would have been for women in those times. I can recommend this book yo those who like historical fiction and romance.

Two sisters, divided by war, face daily battles to save the lives of the wounded soldiers in their care…This line is an excellent description of this story. A story about two sisters going through a trauma, the trauma that a war leaves behind. The loss, the pain, the distance and the courage to carry on.
A beautiful story showing the strong bondage between two sisters and how they managed to find love in those hard days of the war.
I really loved it, it was very inspiring.
Thank you Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the opportunity to read this story.

Two sisters, separated by war, isolated by grief. Both of them throw themselves into their work to deal with the pain of losing their family - Phoebe as a VAD in France, and Celia as a nurse in a POW camp on Jersey. At its core, this is a story of forbidden love that stands the test of battle and time, a book about friendship and the ties that bind us together in times of trouble. A satisfying ending with a few characters left hanging - perhaps they'll get their own story?

Recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed thus poignant, heartfelt story. It took me into the horrors of war and the tragedy of hate. One can learn from thus and hopefully break down barriers
