Follow Rapunzel-inspired Poppy, a chaotic witch with magic hair, as she learns to control her powers and follow her heart.
When Axl (a gorgeous celebrity magician) comes to town and accidentally purchases a cursed pendant from Poppy’s shop, adventure, trouble, and romance follow as they team up to stop the curse.
This was a fun fall witchy romance with a time travel element similar to the first book in the series, Hex Appeal.
Thank you to HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter and NetGalley for an advanced electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.
A super fun paranormal romance with surprising depth!! Poppy is a chaotic witch who has always felt like she's never quite 'good enough' (both at life and her craft) and when she accidentally sells a cursed pendant to Axl Storm, a travelling illusionist, all hell breaks loose (literally).
Forced to track Axl down and work with him to help break the curse leads to all sorts of steamy hijinks! Along the way family secrets are uncovered and Poppy discovers there's more to Axl than just his charming good looks and playboy ways.
I thought this book was such a delight!! From Poppy's Rapunzel/Tangled hair, to the man-bun, Viking hunk she has to team up with and quickly falls for. The banter between Poppy and Axl was fantastic and the final scene had me cheering for Poppy the whole way through!
Great on audio narrated by Catrin Walker-Booth and recommended for fans of authors like Erin Sterling, Lana Harper or Ann Aguirre. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Ready for some Witchery? Hex and the City is amusing and chock full of sorcery and covens.
One witch is just vile and wretched.
Poppy was funny and I loved how she whipped her hair around like a weapon. It reminded me of a fluke being slapped against the water.
I never warmed up to Alex. In fact, I thought he was a regular sleaze bucket.
It’s the time for witches and soells.
What a fun and magical romance! I needed a light read that had heart and a bit of witchy magic, and this was the ticket. The next installment after Hex Appeal, Hex and the City follows Poppy, who’s a chaos gremlin I loved! Alex is healing, and it maybe doesn’t help that Poppy sells him a cursed amulet. This thrusts these two together in the most hilarious way— I really loved the humor throughout this! And the steam. Oh, the steam is amazing and perfect for the couple.
I highly recommend this, and think it’s perfect for romance and urban fantasy readers because the world building was fun, and the twists were too good to be guessed! You’ll have a wild ride knowing that the end will be satisfying. Excellent autumn read!
Hex and the City is a fun witchy romance with a swoon worthy love interest and a main character learning to accept herself. A brilliant love story with an autumn vibe!

🍂 Review: Hex and the City by Kate Johnson 🍂
The autumn reviews have commenced! This gorgeous cosy book is coming out on 14th September. If you like a gentle, witchy romance/Indiana Jones type adventure, you’ll enjoy this.
Poppy is a bit of an outcast. A witch raised by a family of non witches, she had a lovely childhood but never really fit in. She’s now working in a magic shop in the heart of London, trying not to do any real magic, when she runs into a celebrity illusionist and some strange things start to happen.
I loved the characters in this, Poppy is pure entertainment and Axl, the illusionist, is a much more complicated love interest than you might expect. They have fantastic chemistry and gave me a good few laughs.
The supporting characters are really distinct and I was thoroughly invested in the story.
Thanks so much to @onemorechapterhc for an advance copy of this. As always these are my honest thoughts. Such a lovely comfort read - I have Johnson’s Hex Appeal on my shelf and I can’t wait to read it.
This was hilarious. I had such a good time reading it and I laughed and smiled so much. I feel like when a book can do that it doesn’t really matter what’s going on, I will follow you anywhere. But I also here thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the characters. If you enjoyed the Ex Hex, you will definitely need to pick this up!
Hex and the City is a charming and hilarious witchy romance set in London. Poppy is a witch with a chaotic personality who is kind, caring, and very energetic. She lives in a gothic-style estate with her coven and works at a magic shop named Hubble Bubble.
One day, Poppy meets a handsome stranger named Ash at Hubble Bubble. Ash is a warlock who is new to London and is looking for a place to stay. Poppy offers to let him stay with her and her coven, and the two of them quickly become friends. As Poppy and Ash get to know each other, they start to develop feelings for each other. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that they are from different worlds. Poppy is a witch who believes in using magic for good, while Ash is a warlock who is more interested in using magic for his own personal gain. Despite their differences, Poppy and Ash are drawn to each other. They are both kind and caring people who want to make the world a better place. In the end, they must decide whether their love is strong enough to overcome their differences.
Hex and the City is a delightful read that will appeal to fans of witchy romances and contemporary fantasy. The characters are likable and relatable, the plot is engaging, and the writing is witty and charming. If you are looking for a fun and heartwarming book to read, I highly recommend Hex and the City.
Hex and the City was a funny, light-hearted way to start the fall desire for witchy/paranormal romance books! Poppy is such a fun character - her chaotic nature feels very realistic and authentic. I look forward to more fom Kate Jonhson.
This was such a fun and quirky read. It was witty and so perfect if you are looking for a quick read which features witches, romance and a little bit of chaos. Actually I lie, quite a lot of chaos which makes this book even more enjoyable.
I loved poppy and Alex as a couple and I loved how accepting and supportive he was of her when finding out she was a witch as everyone else in her life seems to walk away from her as she is different.
“‘Got drunk, accidentally cursed an object, forgot about the object,’ Iris summarised as Poppy tailed off. ‘We’ve all been there.’”
My thanks to HarperCollins U.K. One More Chapter for an eARC via NetGalley, of ‘Hex and the City’ by Kate Johnson.
Poppy is a witch. She is currently living in a beautiful, ramshackle house next in Highgate, the home of Iris, the head of her coven. She works at Hubble Bubble, a magic shop in Covent Garden owned by Sylvia, another member of the coven. The shop sells crystals, broomsticks, and the like though nothing really magical as that would be irresponsible. Poppy has started creating jewellery to be sold there. Poppy also has very long hair that appears to have a mind of its own.
One evening she has rather too much to drink following a sighting of her former girlfriend getting frisky with another woman outside a pub. Deeply upset she accidentally places a curse on an Eye of Odin pendant. The next day she hardly remembers doing it.
However, things get complicated when her fellow shop assistant, Elspeth, sells the pendant to celebrity stage magician, Axl Storm, who is looking for a gift for Yelena, a valkyrie in his Viking-themed magic show. Poppy realises that she has to retrieve the pendant and remove the curse before it hurts anyone. She confesses all to Iris and so they head off to the Mysterio Theatre to retrieve it. Of course, things proceed to go spectacularly wrong.
The main romance comes in the form of Axl, whose ‘rockstar Viking’ look bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain hammer-wielding Asgardian. She calls him ‘man-bun’ and he calls her ‘Rapunzel’. Sweet. Of course, there are many adventures along the way, including time slips, ghosts, and a restless mummy. Add to this the mundane rom-com tropes of complicated family relationships and various misunderstandings.
The book is set primarily in modern day London and takes place in the same fictional universe as her 2022 ‘Hex Appeal’. However, while there are mentions of ‘the Essex cousins’ and a bit of character crossover, the books work fine individually.
Overall, ‘Hex and the City’ was great fun and I ended up reading in a single day as I was enjoying it so much. I am hoping for more ‘Hex’ books from Kate Johnson as they have a great balance between comedy, romance, and witchcraft-themed fantasy.
When witch, Poppy accidentally sells gorgeous celebrity magician Axl Storm, all six-foot-four of him, a cursed pendant, all hell breaks loose. Can the guy with fake magic and the girl with real magic fix the chaos they’ve caused? Or will sparks fly both in and out of the cauldron?
Extremely entertaining & enchanting, this book was like a breath of fresh air. I loved the shenanigans Poppy & Axl went through to get the pendant & destroy the curse.
There were so many laugh-out-loud moments that balanced perfectly with the witchy, whimsical plot.
<i>Thank you Netgalley & Publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review.<i>
I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I was so hyped to read this, I love witchy romance books and this sounded like it had serious Autumn vibes too, I only it’s only August but I want it to be Autumn already.
So I lit a candle and settled down to read Hex and the City.
Poppy is a witch she lives in magnificent if a little shabby house next to a graveyard of all places, her landlady/Head of her Coven is Iris and Iris’s friends are called Sylvia and Fiona.
Poppy works at Hubble Bubble which is a magic shop ( for civilians) n Covent Garden, she’s also really unlucky in love and doesn’t really seem to ever get a break.
Is her luck about to change when she meets Axl Storm, even though disaster strikes?.
I was absolutely bewitched by this story, it was the perfect blend of old style witchy magic and modern day romance, it was also absolutely hilarious!.
I also loved hearing about how Poppy and Iris met and the backstory they have together, I found it fascinating and Iris was definitely my favourite character, she was so funny.
I love a magical read and I was so excited to get to read Hex and the City. Poppy, the main character, was such a fun character. Chaotic and funny, she had me giggling throughout the book. I do think that I would have enjoyed just reading about her without any romantic interest. The romance for me was meh. I am not a fan of " insta love' so for me, that is where the book didn't deliver. I will say that the characters did have chemistry and shared some spicy scenes.
A chaotic but fun read that entertained me.
Thank you, Harper Collin UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley, for the advanced copy of Hex and the City.
Oh my goodness! I loved this one. While I liked Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson last year, I found it a bit slow in the beginning. Hex and the City did not suffer from that same problem. I didn't see where this is being touted as book 2 in a series, but there are some crossover characters from Hex Appeal. You do not need to read Hex Appeal to understand what's going on in this book, but there were some nice throwbacks that made me smile. This was a fun read right before the spooky season.
Poppy is a witch who brings nothing but chaos to whatever she does so it shouldn't come as a surprise when she accidentally sells a cursed amulet to a drop-dead-gorgeous celebrity illusionist, Axl Storm. When the stone brings more than just chaos to Poppy and Axl, they must depend on each other to fix all the problems upon problems that occur.
I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this at the beginning (the whole sentient hair thing threw me for a loop lol) but I fell in love with the book! This was such a fun, delightful, heartwarming read! Poppy and Alex are for sure an instalove couple which isn’t usually my jam but the hijinks throughout really made for a fun read.
And I LOVED the positive female pastor rep! As an open and welcoming female pastor myself, I thoroughly loved Poppy’s mom.
If you are looking for a quick, light, witchy read perfect for the start of spooky season, I recommend you check this one out!
I think this is one of the best new genres ever. I love watching romcoms. I love knowing that everything will be well in the end. I love laughing out loud because so many things go wrong. I love the romance that sometimes is just unrealistically sweet. But on paper romcoms often bore me. Unless you add a paranormal or supernatural component. So when I saw this book on Netgalley I didn't hesitate and requested a copy. I was insanely happy One More Chapter granted me one.
This book and its main characters are a match made in heaven. The plot of the book is just as chaotic as Poppy and yet the book is as addictive as Axl. And although the book is set in the same world as Hex Appeal you really don't need to read that book before picking up this one. This book takes place in London and has an entire new cast of characters. I do believe that if you like this book, you will also wanna read the other book in the series.
However, if you expect a true romcom where the focus is on the romance and the plot is relatively absent you might wanna find another witchy romance. There is quite some plot in this book and the characters have quite some adventures. Just like in the other book in the series we're battling curses, are thrown back in time and are facing some challenges before our couple can start their happily ever after together.
The magic does make up for it though. Just like the other book in this world the magic really steals a lot of the spotlight. Both by what is done on purpose, what is done by accident and what is faked on a stage. The author also does a really great job writing the magic down and making it come to life! Just like the characters. They felt really real, despite the fact that Poppy is a witch. You might almost believe that maybe witches DO live among us!
If the author writes another book in this world, I'll certainly read and enjoy it again!
I loved everything about this book. It was magical and completely unique.
Poppy is a witch that's learning to control her magic. Everything about her is a little chaotic, including her Rapunzel hair that truly has a mind of its own. When she accidentally hexes an amulet, things get crazy and she meets Alex.
Alex is a famous magician. Right from the start, his and Poppy's relationship is scorching hot.
There are so many twists and turns in this book. It was a magically wild ride that I couldn't get enough of.
Hex and the City is a perfect witchy read to enjoy during the upcoming fall season.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Another cute, witchy fall read!
This is a fun paranormal romance involving a witch, Poppy, with magical hair like Rapunzel. Chaos follows Poppy wherever she goes and she's new to magic, so she has a lot to learn about control. Axl is a hot, celebrity magician. Poppy's co-worker "accidentally" sells a cursed pendant to Axl and Poppy has to try to get it back before it causes trouble. Adventure follows!
The best part of Hex and the city is the different kinds of witches. All while reading, I had to think to myself, 'What kind of witch would I be?'
Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC!!
Hex and the City by Kate Johnson is a cute story about a witch, Poppy and stage magician Alex and all the chaos that follows them! I think the premise was well done but the characters fell flat in their development. I was also having a hard time following along about half way through, especially with the time travel scenes. Overall, I think this is a quick and cute fall read.
