First off, thanks to netgalley for providing me an ARC!
Everywhere Poppy seems to go, trouble follows.
However, our story starts when she gets drunk and accidentally curses an amulet that gets sold to THE Axl Storm, local celebrity and actor. Poppy goes to try to retrieve the amulet and ends up on a wild adventure/chase with Axl. Their attraction is intense, so intense that it sends them back in time! Even Poppy sentient hair can't keep itself off of him!
But as the chase comes to a close, comes to find out Poppy's upbringing isn't exactly what she has been told...
Overall, the story was fun. It just felt very chaotic, which may have been the point, but as I was reading, it didn't feel cohesive. It's a fun, quick read, and I would recommend it to someone who likes silly romances.
Thank you to netgalley and Harper Collins UK/One More Chapter for sharing this arc in exchange for my honest opinions.

Witchy romance
When Poppy (Rapunzel) accidentally sells Alex (Manbun) a pendant they she may or may not have drunkenly cursed, a whole host of mayhem ensues. Can they work together to control the chaos?
This book was so fun! Magic, witches, romance, time travel, Kings Of Leon (iykyk) and sentient hair. What more could anyone want or need in a story! I was so immersed in this story and need some fan art immediately! There was a few twists and turns that I absolutely would not have been able to guess, which was very refreshing. Whilst this is a romance, and there are a few open door scenes, there is also a great plot that was super exciting, and a dose of humour throughout.
This is my first book by Kate Johnson and I will absolutely be reading more!
So happy to get the ARC on Netgalley because I read and loved Hex Appeal and couldn’t wait for the next one!
This was a really cute story about Poppy who’s a witch and learning some other things about who she really is and Alex who’s a stage magician and is running from who he used to be. I liked them together and liked seeing their relationship grow even though they didn’t know each other long at all. Also the other witches in Poppy’s life are great characters as well. This was a great follow up to Hex Appeal and I’m a sucker for witchy rom coms so I hope there’s more to come! And I believe this comes out in September so it’s the perfect book to add to your witchy/autumn/spooky/October TBR.
(This can be read as a stand-alone if you didn’t read the first yet)
I can totally see myself reading this book while sipping a Pumpkin Spiced Latte while enjoying every single word on the page.
This book was a super light and fun read and something perfect to snuggle under the cover with. It follows Poppy, a witch who accidentally sells a cursed item she did not intend to sell, so she tries to get it back. However, chaos follows her wherever she goes.
This is a perfect rom-com where the plot is just as important as the romance, each in perfect balance. Overall this book was chaotic (in a fun way), unexpected, and funny.
One last thing Poppy, the protagonist. Has literal magic hair!!! Which is so cool!
Thank you, NetGalley and HarperCollins, One More Chapter, for this fantastic ARC!
not my favorite and was hard to get into. but eventually I pushed through. Great concept and story line. just hard to get into at first.
I love a good witchy story like this. I think I made the mistake of trying to read this when it is made for audiobook. The story was a little slow in the first third. Then I sorta got confused. The humor was funny but the writing was choppy. Also it’s an insta chemistry situation and I needed more.
This one wasn’t for me! (DNF at 35%). The beginning to this story was hard to follow, other than the repetitive theme that Poppy is a hot mess express. The plot is still intriguing, and after reading reviews from other readers, I may be compelled to pick this one back up in the fall and try to finish it!
I actually had a bit of a hard time getting into this one at first. There was just so much going on in the beginning with Axl (or Alex) sleeping with all his coworkers, Poppy with all the chaos surrounding her and her hair which has a mind of its own and then the ghosts. But about 1/3 of the way in I started to really enjoy it. It's a fast paced, lighthearted, feel good story, full of magic and mayhem.
Thank you, NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for sharing an digital ARC with me in exchange for an honest review.
Poppy is a modern day witch trying to make it through life. When she sells an accidentally cursed pendant to a famous stage magician (with no actual magic), she’s desperate to get it back.
The story is told in the third person but we get both Poppy and Alex’s perspective (so it’s clear from the beginning who the love interest is). They’re cute but it is very insta love, which isn’t my thing.
There is also so much going on in this story. It seems like it might be resolved in the first 25%, but obviously that can’t happen. Everything wraps up nicely at the end and it makes more sense, but with so much going on in the magic aspect, I feel like we lost a little bit of the romance.
Overall, it’s a cute witchy story. It’s funny and not predictable.
Omg this was such a cute witchy rom-com. I struggled a bit with the writing but that’s on me 3rd person romance writing is always a bit difficult for me. My favorite thing about this book was the main characters hair that was practically alive and had a mind of its own because it reminded me of my hair growing up that just did what it wanted and I’m also pretty sure ate pencils too
One beautiful summer afternoon spent with the perfect book. I found myself entering Poppy’s chaotic life. I was subjected to much romcom fun and came out the other end feeling happy, refreshed and wishing I had hair (like that!). Thank you to One More Chapter and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Thanks Harper Collins & Net Galley for this Arc in return for my honest review.
I love how poppy is a witch and has magic hair like rapunzel from tangled, although I haven't read the previous book, this does stand alone just fine. The romance and time travel for finding your love was amazing. However the Romcom/Fantasy just wasn't for me as the book felt to chaotic.
Thanks to the author, HarperCollins UK, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Although I haven’t read the previous book, this standalone wasn't hard to read. I had a hard time getting into this book but after the first half it was fine. It just felt a bit chaotic to me. It felt like a romcom fantasy book and I haven't read much of those.
What a great cute and fun and witchy rom com book. This had a great writing style and each chapter kept you hooked from the start.
Things you should know about Poppy: 1. She's a witch 2. She has magical hair like Rapunzel from
Tangled 3. She lives with Iris, the head of her coven, in a beautiful, ramshackle house next to Highgate cemetery 4. She works at Hubble Bubble, a magic shop in Covent Garden. Though none of it is real magic as that would be highly irresponsible. Until... ...
Poppy accidentally sells gorgeous celebrity magician
Ax| Storm, all six-foot-four of him, a cursed pendant.
When all hell breaks loose can the guy with fake magic and the girl with real magic fix the chaos they've caused? Or will sparks fly both in and out of the cauldron?
Although I haven’t read the previous book this one stands alone just fine. This was a lot of fun with all the characters and shenanigans and gave me a couple of hours of light entertainment whilst making me smile which is something we all need!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc
loved this romance and the time travel and finding your love. I loved that they didn't really like each in the beginning but their paths kept crossing. interesting to see the mother in the book and the magic.
I really liked this quirky take on a witches life, with chaotic Poppy whose hair does it’s own thing. Add in a Viking illusionist with abs to die for and you’ve got the start of a lovely, easy read. There’s a decent story to it, written well with lots of laugh out loud moments and then see what could happen when a drunken witch gets jealous of her ex. I loved the fact that this book made me feel that there really could be witches out there, normal women with families and jobs, but ready to help a sister witch at the drop of a broomstick. Recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was a fun wee witchy rom com, very cute and quick and fun wholesome read! I laughed and had a good time :)
Hex and the City is such a heartfelt and laugh out loud rom-com! As a fan of books that circle around the idea of magic and witches this definitely has to be one of my favorites. Our FMC, Poppy, is a witch who, similar to Rapunzel in Tangled, has magical hair and powers. Our story begins to move along when Poppy sells a cursed pendant to a famous magician, Axl Storm. Now the duo must stick together in the adventure of fixing their problems. Definitely recommend if you’re looking hilarious and to get you in the mood for Halloween season. Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, and One More Chapter for this eARC!
I loved this title! I don't have quite the mane Poppy does, but as an owner of natural curls, every day is a new day and hair DOES have a mind of it's own! A wonderfully told story of misadventures and how mistakes can be the best thing ever. Loved it!
