This is a fun magical romance - it's part of the same world as Hex Appeal, although reading both isn't essential as they stand alone. Poppy is a witch, Axl a stage magician with secrets, throw in a lot of chaos and you get the story. The supporting characters are also a delight, the other witches are all great characters, and I particularly liked Poppy's parents, whose firm normality is initially a barrier but who take it all in their stride in the end. A really enjoyable read!

Once in a while I like to choose a book thatโs very lighthearted, doesnโt take itself too seriously and is a lot of fun.
I liked this book more than I expected, a really easy read with short chapters which meant I read this just over a day.
This book was so enjoyable, proper laugh out loud moments and a (few) cringe moments but what do you expect from the title.
I didnโt realise this was second in a series so I didnโt read the first โHex Appealโ but you can read this one as a stand-alone. I loved the setting being set in London, the magical characters, the non magical ones too.
Poppy was such a great character and I want her hair! I imagined Alex as a Chris Hemsworth ๐ฅฐ and I enjoyed Poppy and Alexโs chemistry.
Perfect for spooky season as this book will be released 14th September this year.

This was a fun, magical read. Poppy was a fun character who struggled with keeping her magic calm and collected. When she meets Axl, her magic gets even more chaotic. The end seemed to wrap up very quickly. From Poppy learning about her parents to the end, it really felt like a few more pages were needed.
Loved this book, another great story from Kate Johnson. Running along with the previous installments in the series Hex and the City is great fun and full of witchy goodness. I loved it!
Fun, quick read about a modern-day witch and the chaotic situations she ends up in. I enjoyed the dual perspectives of Poppy and Alex--who are both struggling with their identities and how the past is affecting their present.
If you want a slightly-magical rom-com without too much focus on the mechanics of magic, this is perfect for you.
Thank you Harper Collins U.K., One More Chapter and NetGalley for the arc of Hex and the City by Kate Johnson in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
I previously read and adored Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson, so no way was I going to decline the offer to read Hex and the City. A choice about which I have zero regrets. This is another perfect, vibrant, quirky, and funny witchy romance!
Poppy is a witch, she works in a magic shop in the centre of London, and for as long as she can remember, sheโs been surrounded by chaos, from losing multiple phones to the hair on head and itโs refusal to be cut or tamed. All/Alex/Sandy is a stage magician with a magical Viking act just opening in London, with hopes for it to be a roaring success, allowing him to continue his bachelor life, until one day he buys an amulet for his latest jilted conquest, that may have been mistakenly cursed by Poppy. From this point on chaos, shenanigans, ghostly occurrences and more ensue pulling Poppy and Alex into the eye of the storm.
Johnson also delivers a cast of mature and charismatic witches supporting from the sidelines, a vicar mother and a whole dysfunctional family, plus gothic mansions in the centre of London. Throw in some fantastic chemistry, action backed adventures, great queer representation and a great plot that bends and twist with increasing pace, all of which deliver a fabulously fun read that I was really sad to finish!
I canโt wait to see what Kate Johnson des next with the Hex series, Iโm hooked!
This was cute for about the first third. Then waaay too much started happening. Iโm down for some random plot devices, but it felt like we abandoned the first core conflict and instead started fighting mummies and fire and time travel and demons. Also the main male character talked about his relationship with food and his body in a way that was not appropriately addressed by the author. Throwing in a line at the end about him thinking he might have an eating disorder to justify it all and then not actually show any next steps was a terrible way to deal with a serious issue. I could have seen me doing 3/5 had it not been for the ever present self hate.
A story about a witch and an illusionist . Poppy is a young witch with hair long like Rapunzel and everywhere she is there is chaos , one night while she was drunk after seeing her ex with her new love she made a pendant and cursed it . The next morning she accidentally sold it to Alex . When Alex gave it to one of his flings the theater he was performing was on fire . Now together they try to find and destroy the cursed pendant . What happen when these two fell in love ? What the chaos will create ?
I received this book from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own .
Hex and the City is quirky, funny, and full of life. Poppy is a witch, a chaotic one, who is sweet, caring, and incredibly vibrant. She works at a magic shop, and lives in a gothic, ivy covered, estate complete with black gates. Axl or Alex, is a stage magician with a Viking act. While not quite enemies, they definitely don't start out as friends despite some killer chemistry. Alex purchases an amulet which may or may not have been cursed by Poppy, chaos ensuing. The sister witches that Poppy have surrounded herself with are amazing and lend a lot to the story as supporting characters. I hope we see more of their stories at a later date.
There is amazing Queer representation in the book and Kate Johnson made it feel natural. It wasn't the story, it didn't change the story or manipulate it, it just existed (It was still very much apart of the characters but was a part of a whole.). It left me with a feeling of belonging and general contentment. Poppy and Axel had hurtles there were points I put my kindle down lest I throw it. I wanted to knock their heads together and tell them to get over it. I am pretty sure Ivey might of if it went on much longer. There was a good balance of inner and external strife, both left me frantically reading just one more chapter. Hex and the City got me under its spell.
I received an arc of this book and am leaving this review of my own volition.
Hex and the City is a fun, quirky witchy read. I really liked Poppyโs character and her chaotic magic and the development she goes on throughout the book.
The story is fast paced with enough drama and twists to keep you reading on. I loved the relationship between Poppy and Alex and the input of the other witches throughout the story.
Overall a fun witchy read that fans of magical books with enjoy!
Poppy Thistlefoot is a witch who works at Hubble Bubble Magic Shop designing jewellery. Oh so gorgeous Axl is a popular illusionist and he is in the market for something nice. While shopping, Poppy accidentally sells Alex a cursed pendant, and from there on both Poppy and Axl must work together to find a way to break the curse - before everything gets worse!
Hex and the City is a charming, laugh out loud adventure full of chaos and witchcraft. I had nothing but good vibes from this read and would absolutely seek out Kate Johnson in future books. This book is the second in a series, but can be read as a standalone too. Recommended for fans of The Ex Hex & The "Stay a Spell" series. Make sure to mark your calendar, this one hits shelves on 14th September, 2023.
Thanks to HarperCollins, One More Chapter and Netgalley for an advanced copy to review.
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book and I was engrossed from the beginning till the end. There was nice character growth and development and the plot was pretty good with a few twists. This book stands well on its own, even though its the second in a series. Overall, very enjoyable. *I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I was in love with Hex Appeal so I had high hopes for this book. It didnโt have the same magic for me, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. Chaotic witch? I definitely saw a lot of myself in her character. Kate Johnson writes some of my favorite magical/cozy books. Sheโs an automatic read for me, everytime.
Oh this was just so incredible! I've been on such a fantastical romance kick lately and this was the perfect addition to my ongoing roster! Magic aside I think a lot of people (myself included) can see a bit of themselves in Poppy, a bit awkward, clumsy, and is just taking life day by day. 1 accidental curse & a theater fire later and suddenly she's taking care of a hot viking stage magician. Hex and the City was such a fun trip through a few days of absolute chaos, while getting to see the growth of both Poppy & Alex. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a fun mystical romance with a bit of drama & adventure!
Thank you to Netgalley and the phblisher for approving me for this arc!
I loved this book so much. It was such a quick read and Iโve been loving witchy books recently and this did not disappoint. I read Kateโs first book a month ago and I found this on Netgalley by chance and I am so glad I did because I just loved it. The whole vibe, plot, characters, the way in which everything was described and I loved how the different aspects were used such as finding out about being adopted which you donโt see often especially when the FMC is nearly 30 years old!
Full disclosure: I thought Hex Appeal was only okay. I hadn't planned on reading the next in the series but I am so glad I did because Hex and the City is so good! It's funny, fast-paced, sexy, and absolutely full of magical fun and adventure.
Rapunzel and Manbun, er, I mean Poppy and Alex are adorable together and I loved his attitude about her being a witch. After the initial disbelief and questions about how the tricks work, he just kinda goes with it. Star of the show though is Poppy's hair. Some of the subtle lines about what her hair was up to had me literally laughing out loud.
There is insta-love happening but it actually works in this one. I mean, we're talking about witches, magical houses, broomstick riding, sentient(?) hair, and figureheads coming to life. Insta-love is the last thing you have to suspend disbelief over.
Thank you Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an early copy in exchange for my honest review.
Hmmmm. So, this book was pretty chaotic for me, and Iโm not just talking about Poppyโs witchy powers.
I wanted to like this book and loved the blurb, but the story felt so chaotic and like too many ideas were thrown together in an attempt to create the story โ it really felt like everything but the kitchen sink was put into this one.
It was still fun to read at times, but the love was too insta-love like for me as well. It just didnโt quite work for me.
Iโm not sure if I will be trying another book by this author. Iโm not opposed, but we shall see.
This was a fun witchy little romance read. I felt like the storyline was very original and the characters were so unique and fun. The story is told through alternating perspectives and is written from the third-person perspective, so it felt a little odd but it didn't really affect the overall story. Definitely a rom-com and the spice was picked up a little from the first book.
4/5 stars
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!
The story was good. The characters were witty and had a bunch of charisma. The writing style was simple to read and I had no issues with understanding what was going on. It's more of a romcom fantasy which I am here for. Its a little bit of magic and a whole lot of fun
A cute and fun witchy read! I'm a little new to hte universe because I didn't read Kate's other books, but you can definitely read it as a stand alone!
