In a bilingual retelling of the age-old fairytale, the story begins as expected. The heroine, Moni, sets on the traditional path to la casita de su abuela and meets un lobo along the way, but it’s here the story diverges from its typical plot. The wolf stands with un bandoneón and plays a song which transforms Moni’s hood into a dress and her basket into a rose. However, when the music stops, the two converse and any magic Moni experienced is forgotten as el lobo shares a frightening confession. As the story continues, Moni’s experiences uncover the magic of la música and languages learned in the woods.

Rachel S. Hobbs delivers a narrative with a clever twist in Tango Red Riding Hood. Paired with Carolina Vázquez’s vivid and whimsical illustrations, the story is both entertaining and engaging. While the text is suited for a bilingual home, classroom, or as supplementary reading for a unit on foreign languages, the context does little to help with new or unrecognizable words for children who are unfamiliar with the new vocabulary. Though the final pages include a glossary, the definitions appear too late to keep children’s interest without guided instruction and the lack of alphabetization only furthers confusion. Overall, the story is a sweet attempt at a retelling, but unfortunately the structure falls short.

This book was a fun mix of Spanish and English with a twist on Little Red Riding Hood. This will be perfect for our fractured fairy tale unit.

Tango Red Riding Hood is a cleverly constructed retelling of the fairytale classic with Spanish words and dance culture woven into the story. The changes to the original story will keep the reader guessing. The ending is satisfying. The onomatopoeia throughout will inspire students to move and dance. Readers will connect with the humour around language learning. This book would be a great addition to a classroom collection for younger students, but also older students in a Spanish language learning class.

we loved the glossary at the end of the book and learned some new words. my 5-year-old loved Lobo

What a cute take on a classic story! One of the schools I work at is a dual language school. This is a great book to share with students who are learning both English and Spanish. It will show them that mistakes can happen when you are learning a new language, but that it is okay as you are learning something new. I am excited to share this story with my students in the library. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this cute story.

I love a good adaptation of a classic tale and this book hit it out of the park. I love that there is a glossary in the back with the unfamiliar words. This will definitely be purchased for my library when it is published!

A clever retelling of a traditional tale with a mix of Spanish and English. The book highlights how things can be misunderstood between two languages whilst giving the children the fundumental story line so that they can understand and interpret this twist. The illustrations are colourful and engaging.

Good use of a glossary at the back to support language development and understanding (English/Spanish)

I absolutely adored the twist end to this retelling of Little Red Riding Hood! It was totally unexpected and made me, someone who is legally an adult, laugh. I was honestly thinking up to that point about how the illustrations of the wolf were a little bit scary, but the tone shift and illustrations after were adorable. My only issue is that I always prefer dual language materials to have the translations on the page, rather than in a glossary in the back, as I feel like that encourages adults to explain/teach the meaning of the phrases to their littles as they're going along. I don't know too many kids who would be excited to have to flip back and forth or go through the definitions after reading the actual story.

Tango Red Riding Hood is a modern take on the well known fairytale - it highlights diversity and how language barriers can cause misunderstandings. Beautiful illustrations, fun writing and a surprising twist at the end. The Spanish glossary at the end was helpful too. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed this diverse little red riding hood. It was very unique and had a great twist at the end! I love the glossary at the end! I did look at it for several of the words. I know my spanish speakers would love this one! I definited must have for my fairy tale collection!!

Cute and clever. This book did a good job of illustrating cultural diversity and showing how easily language barriers can lead to misunderstandings.

Most of the Spanish words are understandable in context; however, there is a full glossary in the back of the book if you get stumped by any of the words.

This is a charming little picture book about a tango loving granddaughter, some cookies, and a wolf. The story is the retelling of the classic "little red riding hood." The art work is so beautiful and the twist at the end is sweet and humorous.

I would definitely buy this book for my first and second graders. Although this book utilizes Spanish words, a glossary is located in the back of the book so that readers who are unfamiliar with those words may better understand what is meant by what is being said if they are unable to pick up the context clues.

Always here for a fairy-tale retellings, especially when it includes a secondary language! My students LOVE learning words in other languages and this will be such a fun read aloud! I really enjoyed the story and the beautiful illustrations. I also enjoyed that nearly all the Spanish words were reiterated in English or very easy to guess based on the context. Pair this with Fedrico and the Wolf for even more bilingual Red Riding Hood fun!

This is a beautifully illustrated twist on the Little Red Riding Hood tale which packs a lot into it: Argentinian culture, tango, and Spanish.

I don’t usually love when Spanish is intertwined into English sentences so much. As a multilingual, I can understand it, but wonder about monolingual readers, and as a teacher I tend to favor bilingual books or separated sentences in either language. However, the text flowed quite well and the story was very enjoyable.

The book had pretty illustrations, but I didn't love it. I thought that it didn't flow well enough and it didn't help that I couldn't understand the Spanish words.

Rachel S. Hobbs has created an outstanding, hilarious twist to a classic fairy tale with Tango Red Riding Hood. Filled with vivid illustrations and interspersed with Spanish words, this is an excellent read aloud for my predominantly Spanish-speaking students. Moni will tango into the hearts of young readers everywhere.

A cute modern version of Little Red Riding Hood! Moni loves dancing and can’t help herself sometimes! When she has to bring food to her grandma, she encounters a wolf. But there is a cute twist here! Would recommend!
