A cute book about a little girl who explains to the reader how her piano works before she performs in her piano recital. The book has cute rhymes that grow on each other and are lyrical which is the perfect format for this book. This would be a cute book for a budding pianist or someone who wants to introduce their kids to music.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This book is a work of art! It’s a perfect way to introduce children to the piano and explain the different parts. The use of repetition will help them remember each part as it is introduced. At the end, a glossary helps explain anything they didn’t understand. When the child in the story gets to her recital, the two pages with the music notes swirling around the in the air are absolutely gorgeous. This book would be especially good for students preparing for their first performance. As a former music educator, I’ll definitely buy this for the kiddos in my life!
Unbelievably cute but still really informational. The illustrations by Anita Bagdi were so precious they tugged at my heartstrings.
The vocabulary may seem a bit advanced for smaller children but it is correct. The proper vocab for the parts of the piano and the illustrations showing these could probably even help some adults just starting out and learning about the piano.
The description of what it feels like to perform a recital is so accurate and beautiful, and I don’t understand how Bagdi did it but, her art does make you feel what it’s like to be in the presence of live music, and more, what it feels like to perform in a recital.
Absolutely beautiful. This book will be perfect to give my sweet niece! (Her mom and I became best friends in college in our music theory class.) This is musical and educational, and the three of us also love books so it’s a trifecta of perfect! We WILL be ordering copies.
Super cute. The illustrations are perfect. It is a great book for kids who may be nervous about any type of performance. Many kids play instruments so this is a relatable book but could also be used to talk about nerves for sports, talking in front of class- anything. There is also a break showing the parts of the piano which is great for kids who are not familiar with the complex parts of that instrument.
This was SO cute!
Not only was it beautifully illustrated, but it was educational and the rhymes it more fun to read!
The repetitive rhymes drove home the different piano facts as well as reminded me of songs like The 12 Days of Christmas, where one line is added and then it repeats the other lines. Such a fun read and even learned a few things myself. 5 stars for me 🙌
Cute children’s book about how a child prepares prior to her recital and shows her connection and bond with the piano.
This was a really sweet book! I was going to read it to my younger sibling, but I didn't have the time. He did mention that he liked the cover, which is usually a great sign for children's books! I loved the fun and sweet rhyming (reminded me of There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Lake) and kids will really pick up on the repetition and learn a lot about the piano and it's mechanisms from it. There is also great rep with the child being a musician and a person of color! I feel it's subtle but very inspiring.
Just lovely ✨ I loved everything - the piano and all its different parts, her sparkly dress and slippers, the flowers in her hair, the illustration of music, the colours. I love pianos. They are my favourite instrument. Anyone who's ever been touched by the music from a piano will understand this book and hopefully that love will be passed down to our children 🎹 There is something magical about pianos.
What a delight! The illustrations are beautiful, the facts of how a piano works are informational, but the rhythm of this book is what won me over. This is a winner for young children, especially one who is musically inclined or going to start piano lessons.
Thank you so much to Gnome Road Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
A beautifully told picture book. Our little protagonist is ready to take the stage for her piano recital and shares all the parts that make it work. With really absolutely beautiful illustrations to go with it.
This was so sweet, I really loved that we are seeing the piano through a child’s eye, the child that will be playing it. She goes round each part and shares every little bit of it, I loved that she added to it and it repeated but expanded every time she shared about a new part.
The illustrations were really beautiful and worked wonderfully for this story, I loved seeing the parts of the piano as she shared and then her playing before the crowd was so sweet. I really enjoyed all the illustrations.
This is an absolutely perfect book especially if you have a child that is about to start learning the piano or they themselves are doing a recital. It’s a great picture book to read and is so sweet. It even has extra piano facts at the end. I really enjoyed this sweet book.
A sweet picture book about a girl and her first piano recital with simple verses and rich illustrations. The end pages explain the parts of a piano. It reminded me of piano lessons in third grade and was surprised I could still name some of the parts! Highly recommend for littles interested in learning an instrument!
My five year old didn’t really understand this and some parts were a bit wordy for him.
However, as someone who loves piano music, I really enjoyed this!
Told in rhyme and repetition, Jen Fier Jasinski’s My Piano is a child-friendly introduction to a piano’s inner workings. From frame to keys and all in between, the story develops through the eyes of a young performer, preparing for her first recital. With function explained, the narrative shifts to the personal and it’s then both words and artwork truly shine. Furthered by Anita Bagdi’s breathtaking illustrations, the plot explores the nerves, beauty, and exultation experienced throughout the performance. Concluded with both a diagram and note of encouragement to future performers, this book a wonderful addition to the library of any piano student.
Thank you to NetGalley and Gnome Road Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Beautiful illustrations to go along with the story. Wonderful way to teach piano. This book is good for adults and children. It explains the piano and music simply which is needed when someone is first starting to learn to play the piano. Piano teachers and music teachers alike should have this book as a reference for students. Excellent resource.
This is a lovely book for any child who is interested in the inner workings of a piano, especially a grand piano, or preparing for a recital or even a grading exam.
The illustrations are lovely and vibrant. Quite beautiful, especially depicting music.
As a piano teacher, I was so happy to get to review this book before publication. And It Is Beautiful!
The little story flows in such a lovely way, almost like it is being sung. And the way that the "educational" description of the piano intertwines with the excitement of performance was masterfully done.
The tips at the end about how to have a great recital experience are a great addition! I plan to recommend this to my young piano students.

My Piano is a sweet story about a girl and her first piano recital. The story reads melodically and the illustrations are beautiful. My 4 year old has her first dance recital coming up and she loved the idea of the girl going over her "piano information" to build her confidence before taking the stage. Such a lovely read for any little who will have a stage performance! Highly recommend.
Thank you to Gnome Road Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC!
This charming book about a young girl at a piano recital is told in rhymes and the illustrations are beautiful. The technical parts of the piano are described a few times throughout the book and there is a diagram on one of the last pages. The recital portion of the book highlights how important music is. A beautiful book that teaches as well as tells a lovely story.
Such a good, fun and enjoyable read about describing the parts of a piano through the words of a young girl who’s about to perform on stage.
The illustration is amazing and the narration is so well written.
Go for it.
Thank you, Gnome Road Publishing, for the advance reading copy.
What a delightful book, a lovely story written in rhyme with beautiful illustrations. This is definitely a book I will recommend to our children’s librarian. I know we have many children who will love to read this book and learn all about the piano at the same time.
