First things first, I didn’t like that they were refuting to some of the mental health patients as “crazy”. No one deserves to be titled that or defined by something that so many individuals have.

I had a few ideas where this book would go. My favorite of which was not how this book ended (although I wish it did). My other idea, which I didn’t like as much was how the book ended

So it was predictable, and not the most like able characters. While she was accepting of some of the patients she wasn’t nice to others.

The book was fine, nothing too memorable and was hoping for more. I loved the Housemaid series, but sadly this doesn’t come close to those.

I already knew I liked this author but holy cannoli this one had me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t see the twist coming. I was convinced everyone was the bad guy. Wow! This is a can’t miss author for me FOR SURE!

I loved this book. Freida McFadden is so good at these thrillers. And Leslie Howard brings these characters to life in the audiobook. I was completely immersed in this story. I didn’t know who to believe, and every time I started to believe one character the author threw me for a loop and I had to rethink that point of view too. The ending is perfect. I’d say start this book when you can finish it. Because u are not going to want to put it down! You have to know who should and shouldn’t be in Ward D! This would make a great movie. I am always impressed with a thriller that keeps me guessing!

This one was so enjoyable. I simply loved the world we got a taste of in this book and as someone going back to school in this field, it made this one so good! Freida’s books only get better the more they release and this is probably one of my favorites. Highly recommend!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC, Freida has done it again. When I thought I had it all figured out.
I did have a few predictions and got a few right, but there were plenty more twists that just kept on unraveling!

Medical student Amy Brenner is spending the night on a locked psychiatric ward.

Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out.

And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger.

Amy’s worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D.

And now she might never escape.

Ohhhh Freida. I have been trying to give you so many chances to redeem yourself after the last few books I've read
that have fallen short. This audiobook was one of the most predictable yet. I had the entire ending figured out by chapter 10. One thing that really rubbed me the wrong way is how many times the word "crazy' was used. I mean, we get it, it is a locked psych ward. I think crazy is insinuated. And this weird quote: "If you meet someone truly crazy, that is the only way to know you are sane." Excuse me? What? That literally makes no sense.

Since I am not posting this to anything social, my advice would be to have some of the characters in the ward have something OTHER than schizophrenia. I mean, throw some self-harm or bipolar, maybe even some antisocial behavior in there to make the story less predictable.

About the narrator: I did not enjoy how she kept lowering her voice to sound more masculine. It seemed 1/2 way through the reading, she stopped this odd way of narration. I think this audiobook could do with someone that just speaks with normal inflection.

I listened to this novel as an audiobook and enjoyed the narrator very much. However, I deeply disliked Amy, the medical student, who seemed to possess no good sense at all! I got annoyed so often at her because of her naivety (stupidity?), her way of reacting and her comments! I found it very hard to believe in her as a medical student! The plot did not always convince me, it might have to do with my disliking Amy though. The conclusion did not bring any surprises. The book was okay but for me not special.
I received a digital audiobook from NetGalley and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.

Amy is one book character I really, really disliked. That doesn't happen very often. The plot seemed really promising, but the story development is not realistic, the main character is too immature and un-likeable, and the twists are too far out there to make any sense. I enjoy dark thrillers, but this was just not it. I am not posting a review on Goodreads or Instagram for this book.

Wow this is crazy messed up! I love the twists!

Amy is a medical student and chooses to work in a psych ward for one of her medical rotations. What could go wrong with being locked in overnight without knowing who is crazy and who is telling the truth?

Ah man, this was so stressful. It was very easy to place myself in Amy’s shoes. The story felt very real and that made this very interesting to relate to her. (Minus the hallucinations).

I just love Freida’s writing style. It is very fast paced, engaging and enthralling. I have been trying to get caught up on all of her books.

Thanks NetGalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I was hooked with this, an incredible premise: Amy, our FMC, is locked in a psych ward overnight as a medical student; plus Amy is an unreliable narrator so we're never too sure what is real and what is not.

This is a slow starter but it is worth sticking with it as once things amp up I couldn't put it down. I also loved the slight open ending, which I won't spoil, but I think it worked really well with the rest of the story and at the same time explained a lot of things. Overall this is a really great suspenseful thriller.

This was a very interesting listen. It has an unreliable narrator and it jumps between two different time lines. While I normally dislike both of those things, it worked for this story. The narrator was a great fit for the character and did a good job bringing out her nerves and anxiety. The tones and inflections were well done, as were the voices of all the other characters. The only issue I had with this one was the believability. I have never been in a locked psych ward and I have no real idea how the operate but I am pretty sure they have much more security than was on the ward. That tamped down my enjoyment a little bit. I did think the twists were fun and interesting though.

Freida McFadden and a night in a locked psych ward sounded like a combination I couldn’t miss! And neither should you.

Grab the audiobook version (the narration is super great) and snuggle into your favorite reading place. To set the mood, I suggest you read this creepy gem at night with the lights turned very low.

To be honest, this book didn’t grab me immediately. Amy is an uptight medical student who is freaking out about doing her required overnight shift in a psych ward. Yes, the doors are locked so patients can’t leave. But staff members are given the code to open the door for emergency purposes. Amy is a little annoying in the beginning and nothing too exciting happens.

Then a few people go missing and strange things start to happen. Nothing overly exciting at first and I felt it was going to be a fairly predictable book. I shouldn’t have underestimated Ms. McFadden. When the twists started, they hit hard and fast! Most are unpredictable shocks that fling readers into an action-packed and riveting ending.

Omg! I adore Freida McFadden. I think she is brilliant and will read everything she writes. Please don't tell her about this review, but I have to be honest. It was not good. I would say 3 stars is very generous. The story was lackluster. There was no on-edge feeling. I don't understand the wowing reviews at all. The only other book I didn't like by her was Never Lie, and this was way worse. The characters were terrible and all really dumb for some reason. All of them? I was thinking maybe because they are all mentally insane, but even mentally insane people can be manipulative and very cunning. The plot was so outlandish, and while I was reading I was like oh I bet it's going to be a very shutter island type of ending. Nope, terrible ending in my humble opinion.
Maybe still give it a try, but I was not impressed with this one.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for this advanced reader's copy for an honest review.

Well, I knew when I started this audiobook yesterday that I was going to finish it today. And, that's exactly what happened! Right away you get involved with Amy Brenner, who is a medical student. She is assigned to an inpatient mental health unit, Ward D, one night, as all students are for a rotation in pysch. However, Amy is very apprehensive about spending the night on Ward D. You find out why pretty early on, there's no secret there, and the mayhem begins as the hours slowly tick by. It's a fun ride that gets your blood pumping with a great narrator which makes it even more enjoyable.

"Mental illness is really difficult to treat..."

Try living with it! Ward D by red herring loving twisty thriller author Freida McFadden is a wild fun ride if you enjoy locked room plots and trying to figure out what the heck is going on and how do you escape it.

Medical student Amy is petrified of her overnight rotation on the locked psychiatric Ward D. Strangely, her biggest fear isn't what if there are violent patients but what if they think she's a patient and don't let her out. Excuse me?! What?! Why and how could that ever happen...well...never say never.

Seriously, I really thought this thriller was heading in a specific direction; what with an electrical outage and reboot causing some patient rooms to unlock and the main doors to stay locked and no cell reception. However, there were more twists than Chubby Checkers ever danced (look him up millennials).

The one sure thing about Ward D was the always reliable performance of Leslie Howard. She gave Amy all the paranoia one needs to feel the fear.

I loved the inclusion of author John Irving's books in the story especially my all time favorite A Prayer For Owen Meany (if you haven't read it put all books down and read it now)! There are a lot of pop culture references and that's always fun.

I wasn't too surprised how things turned out except for one reveal that did get me to smile because I'm a bit weird about writer's getting me. It's just the best thing as a book lover. I do think there were some missed opportunities. Without giving things away I think Amy's fear of being mistaken for a mental patient could have been explored more...unless maybe there's a sequel. I think Amy might want a chance to redeem herself on Ward D for at least one more night. Just a suggestion🤷

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media via #netgalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Amy is studying medicine, and as part of her training, she has to spend a night in a locked psychiatric facility ward called Ward D. She is dreading that night in there, but it's not for the reasons we think.
What a page turner with just enough foreshadowing to keep you reading and really wanting to know what the frack is going on in that ward! I had multiple theories. Many very weird and concerning things happened, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The story alternate between what happened 8 years ago with Amy and her then best friend Jade and the night in the ward, and how the two events are connected. I did see one of the big twists coming from very early on, but I didn't mind. With Freida McFadden, you just never know who you can trust. The narration in the audio book was great.
If you want a quick and entertaining read and are ready to suspend disbelief, go for it!
I received an advance reader copy and I leave this review voluntarily.

Narrated by Leslie Howard ⭐⭐
Leslie Howard has a great voice, however the way she narrated for some of these characters was painful. It could have been the writing but they came off terribly immature.

Story by Freida McFadden ⭐⭐

First off, the words which Freida McFadden uses to represent mental health was inappropriate. I find it hard to believe that a 24 year old who has always wanted to be a doctor would uses words such a 'crazy' and would behalf so ridiculously.

Those two things for me really ruined this book because the premise and most of the writing /story were good. This could have been a fantastic read.

As a long time freida McFadden fan, I have to say this book just wasn't for me. An obnoxiously annoying main character and very far fetched premise. A very underwhelming plot twist. Left me saying that's it?? Things such as all of the locks opening in the building when the power goes out... there's such a thing as a back up generator and other safety mechanisms that hospitals are required to have for instances such as the power going out. I was definitely not plowing through this book! One thing I did like was the way freida tied the ending up. Although thus one was a dudsey for me, I look forward to my next freida McFadden book.

Freida McFadden returns with another intense thriller: Ward D. While the story features quite a few flashbacks, the main focus of the story is on med student Amy Brenner as she attempts to make it through the night shift on Ward D, a psychiatric unit. While my experience was of course nothing like this, I do have to say this one gave me flashbacks to when I was a student and did a psych rotation on a double locked down unit. Like all of Freida’s books Ward D is a great break from reality. And much like M Night Shyamalan’s work there is typically a dramatic twist at some point, and half the fun is trying to figure out what it will be. And the way she set up the story with the flashbacks and the way the patients on the unit act, Freida really kept me guessing. I ended up with three main theories but kept changing my mind which I thought was right, lol. Leslie Howard does an excellent job with the narration. I’d like to thank Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of the audio version of Ward D.
