This had an intriguing enough plot that I was determined to find out the conclusion, however, getting there was a bit of a battle. The writing was slow, repetitive, and at times aimless. I skimmed quite a bit.
Rob is a harbouring a terrible, traumatic secret. While he has learned to bury this deep down, his friend Dan appears and threatens to ruin everything he has worked so hard for. Dan’s reappearance, coupled with financial troubles and Jessie’s mental health struggles, spell disaster for Rob…
I flew through this book, turning page after page to find out what would happen next. I had mixed feelings about Rob’s character. At times he presented as guilty and protective of his family, while at other times he appears self-centred and apathetic. However, I do feel his character developed as the book continued and the ending cements this development.
Gripping, intriguing and enjoyable with an interesting premise. I would recommend for thriller lovers.
So I finaly finished the book it was a good read I was hooked just by the tiled and the description cause I love my thrillers and good crime book. The author does a good job of making the reader feel the stress and tension from the characters however I did find it a bit slow and found it quite repetitive you find out what happened quite early on in the book and then it just focuses on Robs guilt or is just the worry of getting caught out, being blackmailed and his troubles at home. Not my cup of tea but could be yours so give it ago
Overall, the book was enjoyable but not a favorite read of the year so far. I'm not sure if I would recommend to friends/family. The storyline wasn't very original, but it was well-written and did have some good plot twists along the way. I didn't find the main character to honestly be that likable. He just kind of fell flat for me.
3/5 stars
This was a good thriller! I was spooked, curious and unsure the whole time which is a good sign! I wasn't able to guess most of the twists and really enjoyed uncovering the truth of Rob's secrets. I did see this author has a large backlist of thrillers and I cant wait to dive into those as well! I would highly recommend this title if you like a quick thriller that will keep you on your toes!
This book is good, it has lots of twists and unexpected turns but at some points it does get a little slow and repetitive. Overall it was a good read and I would recommend.
This was a good read, though I found it repetitive at times. It centers on Rob, who made a terrible decision 20 years ago that has haunted him ever since. He has moved on and owns a restaurant; he also has a wife and 2 young kids. He spends a lot of time trying to validate himself as a great person. Things aren't going great, with his business losing money and his wife clearly suffering from postnatal depression after the birth of their 2nd child when his old friend Dan shows up and threatens to expose the secret that would destroy everything Rob has so carefully crafted.
I didn't find Rob to be all that likable and I felt like he tried to hard to be this great guy when it was clear he was trying to convince himself as well. A lot of the book was his own internal monologue. I was also really disturbed that there was clearly something wrong with his wife Jessie that he didn't seem to notice. He also kept an awful lot of secrets from her while constantly telling us how much he loved her and that they didn't have secrets. Once I got beyond that, the storyline itself was good, with some decent twists and a couple legitimate surprises. It was fast-paced overall and I found it to be a quick read. I didn't love the end but I do think it worked well along with the rest of the story.
Overall, I enjoyed the book though it wasn't necessarily my favorite. The storyline wasn't all that unique (in fact, the book I finished right before had an almost identical storyline) but I do think it was well-written and contained some good twists. I'd give it 3.5 stars, rounded up. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A brilliant book one of the best I’ve read this year, never disappoints, I can’t wait to see what’s next
Unrelenting ... Unsettling ... Brilliantly plotted ... Exceptional writing. I couldn’t put this novel down as Rob's secrets slowly lead him to destruction. The twists and turns in the story lead to a very surprising finale. Recommended read worthy of five stars.
I really enjoyed this book! I am a huge fan of thrillers and finished this one on the day to get to the end.
A dark twisty psychological thriller that hooks you right in. This shocked me a lot of times with all the twists and I really enjoyed the writing and characters, especially how so much was at stake for Rob with his new child and restaurant which amped up the tension. Overall this was a solid thriller and I would read more by this author.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #InkubatorBooks for the read/review of #TheSecretsWeKeep by #MIHattersley. This was a first for me for this author and it was pretty good. It had darkness and lies and more. I would like to read some more by you his author.
The perfect psychological thriller. Twisty! Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the arc of The secrets we keep by M I Hattersley.
This was a compelling psychological thriller in a surprisingly domestic setting, set against a backdrop of a seemingly successful restaurateur running a business post-pandemic in a rural location in Yorkshire,
It's a well written, easy (and quick) read, which is just as well as I wanted to find out what happened! I didn't see the ending coming at all.
Honestly I couldn’t put this book down! A page turner!
Rob and Jessie seem to have it all with their family owned fine dining restaurant “ Fire & Ice”and the delivery of their 2nd child, Noah. Despite how things might look on the outside, Rob is having nightmares and trouble sleeping. Jessie knows something is bothering him but he won’t say what it is. Something from Rob’s past is haunting him just as the weather changes and the heat dries out the local reservoirs. When Rob’s childhood best friend, Dan, returns to town, Rob starts acting strange and leads Jessie to believe something bad is going on. As Jessie is struggling with what seems like postpartum depression she is also struggling to trust her husband and cope with her daily activities. Dan makes a surprise visit to the house and Jessie questions Rob about their mysterious and hush discussions . Will Rob’s secrets behind his nightmares come to fruition as Dan reveals some truths to the police and Jessie?

Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Rob's restaurant is struggling after lockdown. He has a family to take care of, and bills are just piling up.
He is visited by a childhood friend that wants to confess to a crime they committed together, and Rob is unwilling to sacrifice his family and business.
His wife is finding it hard to cope with a new baby, a pre-school daughter, and Rob's long hours at work.
The secret that Rob is hiding is destroying what he has built up, and something has to give.
A good read, keeps the reader glued to the pages, and makes the reader realise that their actions have consequences far into the future.
This book is not yet on Goodreads, when it appears there, I will post the review.
Unfortunately, I do not qualify to review on Amazon due to a lack of points.

A quick and easy read that delivers exactly what it says it will! It's a domestic noir and I loved that the premise was a bit unique and original. The writing style was easy to get lost in and the plot is constantly moving forward. The author does a good job of making the reader feel the stress and tension from the characters and of building that tense atmosphere. A few twists and turns, I devoured it I a day and enjoyed every second
Fantastic thriller!
Rob owns a restaurant, has a nice wife and two children. Everything should be perfect for Rob but his wife is not very happy the children are difficult. Rob is busy with his work. Rob also carries a big secret around with him twenty years ago something awful happened. But now as Rob’s perfect life is crumbling his secret is surfacing.
I enjoyed the writing style it was a quick read which I finished in day. I will definitely be recommending this to anyone who loves a dark twisty thriller.
Rob seems to have it all. His own restaurant, a devoted wife, two amazing children and a beautiful home in the picturesque village. But Rob has a secret. One buried deep. A secret he has never shared with anyone, a secret that has changed his entire life. Now his past is about to catch up with him and the events of that summer night twenty years ago are haunting him again, how is he going to keep everything together?
M.I. Hattersley is amazing at writing a domestic suspense. The events move fast but there is a huge emotional depth of the main character. I loved how complex and multifaceted Rob was, not a black and white character but masterful shades of grey. I truly enjoyed the descriptions of Yorkshire countryside, the novel is set in my local area and has a very modern, relevant, truly British feel. The book explores issues of trauma, difficult dynamics of early parenthood and marriage with small children, mental health, trust, friendship and love. The pace is really fast and the twist is incredible.
The only thing I would like to see is dual perspective: Rob’s and Jessie’s. It would make the novel a bit longer and add extra depth. If you like suspenseful psychological thrillers, you will love this. I will be definitely picking up more books by M.I. Hattersley.
Received an ARC of this novel from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
