As a family who loves to travel this book was something I was always looking for. This books was thorough, extremely informative and had many tips, tricks and recommendations. It has everything from well known attractions to the lesser known off the beaten path. We cannot wait to put this book to good use and visit this area and check off the attractions.
The Route 66 Adventure Handbook will take you on an epic road trip! Beginning in Illinois readers travel through six states—Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona—until finally arriving in the Golden State. With the turn of each page, you’ll find yourself in a new city, discovering notable points of interest and off-the-beaten-path hidden gems.
Traveling along Route 66 there’s something for everyone. It’s part Disneyland, part circus, part lost era and a whole lot of fun! A few years ago, I passed through one of the cities included in this book (Holbrook, Arizona) on my way to Petrified Forest National Park. I will personally attest to the peculiarity of this journey—it’s certainly a trip you’ll never forget!
The Route 66 Adventure Handbook perfectly captures all the wonder and amusement travelers will find along the way. Kids of all ages will love the photography, specifically the center spread which features two dozen full-color images. Dig deeper with every QR code, and discover the story behind each destination. If you’re planning to hit even a piece of this historic route, don’t leave home without the Route 66 Adventure Handbook, or you might miss something!
I've traveled Rt 66 a couple of times but this book has given me so many more places to visit and make the trip more fun. If you have never driven the 66, you are in for so many wonderful memories. Be sure to mark your stops and take lots of pictures. The details in this book will make planning the trip so much fun you'll be spending your summer driving.
This is just a cool book. Not really a guidebook. It’s got a ton of really cool pictures and LOTS of great information. I’m not near Route 66 so this may be the only way I can see it. I’m really glad I read this.
I have always wanted to drive along route 66, and though it is unlikely that I ever will this was a great second best. I loved the quirky photos and descriptions along the way, and the road less travelled to visit side road attractions. A delight, a road trip in a book from your own armchair.
This was a fun book to read. Have you ever wanted to just take a road trip to just see what you could? It's difficult to make good choices since there is so much to see. if you want a leg up on a lot of planning, this book will do the trick and save a lot of time and frustration.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a drive thru history. I like the photos and all the interesting tidbits and history about the locations found on Rt.66.
This is a nicely organized book that provides a bit of history in the beginning and then a state-by-state guide to sights along the old highway route. Quirky motels, gift shops, historic sites, signage, architecture and more, the book provides a wealth of information while also providing groundwork to a free-form trip. There are plenty of photographs as well.
The author's intent with this book is to provide information on finding and touring remaining bits of the old highway while also giving insight into the areas at the same time. He avoids overcluttering the book by excluding the more obvious roadside attractions and instead focusing on a lot of hidden gems. Maps are provided but not meant to be inclusive: other guide books have tried that tact and it can be tedious and unrewarding. The author hopes for readers to have an adventure suited to their tastes and so gives many options to explore in each area but isn't expecting them all to be covered (especially not in one trip).
The tone is friendly and the book very informative. I really enjoyed how well the author put the highway into perspective to the milieus of the various states in which the old route passed. This would make an excellent guidebook on a trip but also serves nicely as a fascinating read about America in the 1930s to 1960s. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
I am a road trip junkie and I have traveled from AZ to PA several times and have visited many places mentioned along Route 66. However, there were a few gems that I didn't know about and have really intrigued me and will surely spur on another road trip adventure. If you love road trips, I highly recommend checking our Route 66 with all it's history and adventures.
I'm sure I thought about at least 10 different itinerary while I read this book as it's an excellent travel guide but also a book recommended to armchair traveller
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
Interested in exploring some of the fun that you can have on Route 66? Well you can definitely get your kicks by following this book and going to these places! I recognized so many of these from traveling Route 66 as a kid before I-40 took over. I've lived in Oklahoma nearly all my life (minus 3 yrs) and the beloved Oklahoma sites in this book brought back memories of traveling every Summer with my grandparents from their home on Grand Lake back and forth to our home town of El Reno and up into Missouri when my Grandpa was born and raised just outside Carl Junction/Joplin.
This lays out a fun family trip or weekend getaways for a couple when you follow the book and go to these places. Who knows you might even find a tucked away gem off the highway that you love as well!
Route 66 is a great adventure into the past and one most wanderers plan. This route spans over 8 states and runs 2,400 miles. If taking the whole trip at one time you would need at least 14 days if not more. Most people plan this one into many trips.
This book is a great outline to help you plan either that you are deciding on. I really enjoyed the detail and by state. It does also help to have pictures to make your destination easier to find out on the open road. It has have 24-pages of colored photos to help you see how beautiful this open road trip is. This would be the book I grab for each time I started to plan my trip for Route 66.
Thank you Santa Monica Press and NetGallery for this advance read in exchange for my honest review.
Okay, after reading this book, I am absolutely ready for my next Road Trip.
The book is chock full of Route 66 goodness. It gives you a ton of places that are still there, while bringing you into the history of some things that are no longer around. There are terrific pictures and lots of little hints about how to get to some places that are a bit off the beaten track.
Most of all, this is aspirational! It just makes you want to jump in the car and go!
I'll definitely keep this around as my motivation to travel!
The author is extremely knowledgeable about the old historical Route 66 and it is evident in this book. I really enjoyed reading this and learning about the stops along the way. I live in Arizona and have visited many of the old Route 66 ideas. The breakdown of this book is helpful You can use it in succession or it is easy to find the section or state that you would like to focus on. I liked the QR codes scattered throughout that linked to picture slideshows. The layout did not come out perfectly onto my kindle and that made it a bit confusing to follow at times as the pictures included broke up the text and the labels were on the following page. Otherwise this a great resource to have!
