Unfortunately, after two books Emma is not turning into the spy for me. Her choices can still come off as silly. Also the tech makes this just a little unbelievable for the level of action-packed the story is aiming for.
This was a great, action filled book that hooked me from the start. Emma is an MI5 agent tasked with investigating the Russians and a Double Agent from their yacht. Loved her character - strong but still personable. Enjoyed the book. I had not read the first book and had no trouble following along.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The second book in the Alias Emma series is even better than the first. Emma Makespeace is is hunting down Russian Oligarchs and a double agent too. The title had me suspecting everyone and I apologize to those I’d wrongly convicted.
Part locked room mystery with the claustrophobia of a yacht out to sea with no backup, action packed chases in beautiful locations and plenty of spy shenanigans to round it all out.
The side characters added a lot to my enjoyment as they all seemed to bring so much to the adventure. I would have enjoyed more chapters with spy gadgets…maybe in the next installment.
Exactly what you think it'll be in the best way. If you love lady spies and realistic-sounding conspiracy plots set in the crystal blue waters off of France, The Traitor is exactly what you need... especially if you think you'd be a good spy!! ;) (Or you need a really great audiobook. The Traitor will be my pick for a spy novel recommendation for a while!!)
Sometimes, I forget I like spy novels. It catches me off guard every time I read one, and I am immediately entranced. Whose behavior is sneaky, who isn't what they seem... who will turn out to be smarter than they present themselves to be? Spy novels are amazing for figuring out if you're good at reading people and their purported body language!!
I don't want to give too much away - because even though I saw a few things coming - I definitely could not be a spy because a few other plot twists blew me away!!
NOTES:
- A bit graphic in describing people's demise, but overall - nothing felt egregious like some spy movies?
- The suspense was really well-balanced!!
- Also, I didn't read the first book, but I didn't notice and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything!!
**Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Bantam & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
My thanks to Net Galley and Random House/Ballantine Books for this arc.
This was my first book that I read by this author and was not a bit disappointed. I look forward to much more in this series.
Emma Makeprace is an MI5 agent asked to pose undercover working on a yacht of Russian criminals suspected of murdering one of her coworkers and stuffing his corpse in a suitcase
This have me James Bond vibes. Martha reminded me of their version of Q. It was nice to see a strong woman protagonist. I liked this book very much.
In Glass' sophomore outing, experience is certainly shown with a steadier plot, better character growth of our MC Emma Makepeace with some targeted flashbacks, and overall a more believable world. My only critique... but its a big one... is the massively telegraphed ending. While written to make you believe it's an unexpected twist, I knew from about a third of the way in who the baddie would be; and it kinda felt like she wanted that to be the case! There were easily three plot devices she used to show her hand at ultimate betrayal. I honestly thought she was working hard to lay a red herring, so when the inevitable happened, I felt like a kid opening a present in the shape of his favorite toy to find socks. And not cool socks... itchy ones.
Nevertheless! A positive step in the right direction; well done Ava!
My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
I previously read and enjoyed Alias Emma. This is the second in the series and it does not disappoint. Ava Glass realistically paints Emma as a very strong character who must change her identity and go undercover in very dangerous situations. In this episode, she has the added complexity and danger of finding a double agent in the midst of her super-secret organization, The Agency.
This book is a definite page-turner and I look forward to future episodes in the Alias Emma series.
Even better than Alias Emma! More exciting and more authentic. Emma is a talented spy, full of plans but unrealistic about risks and somewhat short on discipline. As a former yachtie, I thoroughly enjoyed the action on the water. This must become a series.
This is the second book in this excellent spy series starring Emma Makepeace by Ava Glass. I loved the first book so I was thrilled beyond belief for the opportunity to read part two.
Emma works for "The Agency" which is a spinoff of Mi6. They are tasked with spying on Russians who are viewed as a threat to the UK. When one of their fellow agents are found brutally murdered they suspect it is because of a potential arms/weapons trade by the Russians and Emma is placed in a possible suicide mission as a employee on a yacht for one of the Russian suspects. She has the mission of spying and gathering information as they travel all over the Mediterranean. This leads to a tense and suspenseful atmosphere as Emma struggles to maintain her identity aboard the yacht and try and bring this arms deal down.
The good: The book did a excellent job as a spy novel. Emma is a badass throughout the book and the international locations were awesome. The fight scenes were top notch! It's hard to write a good fight scene but this one does it several times. You felt like you were right in the middle of a action movie.
The Bad: I wasn't a fan of the plot twist at the end and thought it was too easy. The book is still excellent overall and highly recommended if you want a exciting spy caper to read.
I really appreciate Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Bantam for giving me the opportunity to read this book for free for a honest review and it has a publication date of September 19, 2023.
This turned out to be a great rainy day thriller for me which I dived right in and couldnt stop until the end.
Emma Makepeace is back in The Traitor from Ava Glass.
"Emma is goes undercover on a Russian oligarch's yacht. She's looking for evidence of his involvement in an agent's murder and the sale of chemical weapons. Once onboard, Emma is worried her cover might be blown. And the true killer may be closer than they think."
Last year's Alias Emma was one of my favorite books. Emma Makepeace is a great character from Glass. This starts as a slow burn but once Emma is on the boat, Glass starts ramping up the tension. There's some misdirection and surprises. The ending in the middle of London at The Shard is wild.
I did guess the traitor but Glass made me wonder for a long time if I was right.
This would be great on Netflix - fights on the beach, powerboat chases, British secret agents and a surprise mole.
Another great Emma story from Glass.
I finished Alias Emma and dove right into this sequel, the characters are so good! Emma Makepeace is a strong new addition to the spy pantheon and I’m enjoying her stories and the world around her. I don’t think this is quite as strong an entry as Alias Emma but it’s still excellent. I say not as good because I saw the main villain coming pretty far out but enjoyed the ride to get there. Will definitely be looking for book 3 in the future!
Excellent rainy afternoon thriller, complete with likable female protagonist and plenty of plot twists.
This was my first Ava Glass novel. I didn't realize that Alias Emma was the first book in this series and haven't read it yet. I assume I didn't miss anything that was needed for this novel. At least, it didn't feel like I missed anything.
I have always been fascinated by spies and the work they do, the risk they take to do their jobs, but I for sure would never want that job.
Emma Makepeace is a spy working to bring down a group that's dealing in chemical weapons and hopes to prevent the deaths of thousands while risking her own life on a yacht in the middle of the ocean. If that isn't terrifying enough, she has to sneak/steal another person's phone to communicate with her agency since her phone was confiscated. She has to sneak around without anyone finding her or suspecting her to get the info she needs... but Andrei's "bodyguard" Crogan hasn't trusted her from the moment she stepped on the yacht, and he has let it be known every chance he gets.
Things go wrong, and don't go as planned, then Emma finds out someone within her agency is a mole and working with the very dangerous men she's trying to bring down, bringing her mission to an end.
I guessed who the mole was but was still shocked when it was finally revealed. The betrayal by someone you trust is never an easy pill to swallow, especially when your job is so secretive that those in your own family can't know what you do for a living and requires you to lie about your life. It has to be very isolating to not be able to trust a single person.
Thank you, Netgalley, for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Who killed an operative? That's what Emma is determined to find out. What she has to go thru makes this story.
Another excellent installment in this series, we again join Emma as she rockets through the world of MI6, bashing the baddies as she goes. This book is what you’d expect from any suspense spy thriller, but better for me, as our protagonist is a woman. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC, always enjoy this author.
Once I got approved by NetGalley for The Traitor, I decided to read the first in this series, Alias Emma to get the backstory on the main character. I loved both novels! In the Traitor, Emma is on another undercover mission several months after the events in the first book. This time, the novel takes place on a yacht near the south of France, a perfect summer thriller! After killing a British agent, Russian businessmen are on the radar of the Agency and Emma is sent to get more information. The author did a great job of non-stop action and the added mystery of the third man. It was a wild ride, but wrapped up in a satisfying way. I can't wait to read more adventures of Emma and the Agency!
I have a confession: I randomly stumbled upon “Alias Emma” while roaming aimlessly at Barnes & Noble. I read it in one sitting and then read the preview of The Traitor in the back, and then looked to see if it was on NetGalley, and immediately requested it. There was no chill period I was on it before I had even closed the book 😂
This manages to be both intense and a little light at the same time - Emma is literally fighting for her life 24/7, but there’s no graphic violence/content depicted. So even though you’re invested in her mission and in her personally, it’s not as intense as some thrillers can be!
Emma is back and on to her next mission. This one is an unusual challenge - she will be onboard a yacht with her mark, with no way to contact HQ for support and with a constant and very real threat of being found out.
When a member of M16 turns up dead, Emma is called in to dig up what intel lead to his demise. When CCTV shows him investigating known weapons dealers, Emma is sent to get as close as possible as quickly as possible to the men he was in pursuit of.
Undercover as “help”, Emma spends her time on the ship both integrating herself with her coworkers for intel, and avoiding discovery as she tries to uncover the truth.
But when her identity is discovered through no fault of her own, Emma realizes the biggest danger is coming from inside the agency itself - and with both her enemies and her own team on her tail, time is running out to see how deep the deception goes.
Fast paced, attention grabbing from the opening chapter. I really enjoyed this book. At times it actually had me on the edge of my seat holding my breath. The ending was a real shocker. Emma/Jess , our heroine is relentless in her pursuit of a criminal, fearless at times. Great storyline.
The second book in the Emma Makepeace series is every bit as good as Alias Emma, the first book. This is a British espionage novel that grabbed me from the first page and I read it straight through to the end. Emma is a great character, the plot is well paced and the twists are unexpected. It's not necessary to read them in order but I do recommend both books in this enjoyable series. Highly recommended
Thanks to NetGalley and Bantam Books for an advanced reader copy.
