I absolutely loved "Angel of Death" by Sylan Young. The story was gripping from start to finish, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were well-developed and the writing was engaging. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thrilling and suspenseful read. 5 stars!

DNFed. I'm sure this book is great and that maybe if I read it at a different time I'd be able to finish it, but that time isn't now.

An action-packed story featuring a body guard romance and political intrigue!

I picked this up randomly and it was just what I needed. The romance and chemistry between the charactes was sizzling, and immediately drew me into the story. I felt so immersed in the mystery and just wanted these characters to be okay. Lee is known as the angel of death, and true to his name he's fierce and protective of Serin, who only wants to be saved from her father.

I loved this setting and story. It was fast-paced and very enjoyable! Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the e-arc!

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

If you like the trope “you hurt her and I kill you”, stories packed with action, smut and drama - then this is a book for you!

My thoughts with spoilers:

In the beginning of the book when Serin tracks down Lee, in the hopes that he will protect her from her father. Serins father is a South Korean Senator, and lets just say Serin has some dirt on him that will ruin his whole life and many other South Korean government officials. So of course, Serin’s father is trying to catch her dead or alive. What better person to protect you than a man named “Angel of Death”?

Throughout the first few chapters of the book, Lee is annoyed with himself that he agreed to protect Serin. He’s better at killing people than getting along with them. But somewhere along the way, Serin breaks down those barriers and they begin to fall in love. That is until Lee’s boss tries to assign him to killing Serin for a huge amount of money.

I haven’t read a book quite like this before where I felt like I was reading an action movie - it was refreshing and I’m hoping to read more books like this!

I liked that Serin and Lee’s relationship was the typical “grump and sunshine” but in many ways they found common ground with each other when it comes to feeling cheated by the world

Can’t forget about Lee’s two dogs Daegu and Jeju - the goodest boys ❤️

Angel of Death is a very steamy, extra dark, grumpy x sunshine body guard romance with tons of action and disturbing details. I forget exactly when / where I saw this book described as a Jason Bourne / John Wick-esque romance, but as someone who's got a basic understanding of those franchises, the description feels apt? Think morally gray protagonists who can hack and stealth their way into compounds and take out dozens of goons in order to protect their loved ones and bring down the corrupt. The book is intense and violent, with two protagonists who've endured truly traumatic pasts, including all kinds of abuse, and in Lee's case, literal torture. At times, it felt very over the top (the villain is *such* a villain), but it certainly made for a fast-paced read!

Lee's the super hot, brooding ex-special forces body guard hired by Serin to protect her from her father, a corrupt politician. Lee's not exactly keen on the job, given that he's not a body guard, he's a trained assassin, but there's something about Serin and this job that feels like a means for redemption. As for Serin, she starts out childish but grows into a more competent / lethal person. The two fall in love and end up having tons of very steamy scenes together, which contributes quite a lot to the length of this book. If you're looking for a story with everything turned to eleven (steam, violence, drama, pacing), this one could be for you! Just make sure to check the full list of content warnings, because there are many...

Thanks to @authorsylanyoung and @netgalley for the ARC. The book drops on May 26th!

This was a fast paced romantic suspense story. I enjoyed this quick read as bodyguard romances are my absolute weakness!

This was a quick read with an interesting plot. The conflict was well written and the characters were interesting, especially Lee who was quite well developed, the same as their relationship with Serin. Though, I must say I found the ending a little rushed because what Lee did was a great step back in their relationship, one I can't imagine anyone overcoming as easily and quickly as Serin did.

The writing itself dragged a little bit at points. I noticed Lee was vulnerable in combat situations a little more than one would expect of the "Angel of Death".
I also think onomatopoeic words shouldn't be used outside of dialogues, it makes the writing childish and hard to be taken seriously.

But all in all, this is an interesting debut novel. Good luck to the author.

Angel of Death is a romantic suspense featuring Serin, the daughter of a crooked politician, and the man she hires to protect her from her father, Lee. Lee, known as the Angel of Death, specializes in hits - he gets in, he gets out, and he never gets caught. Something about Serin tempts him to offer his services as a bodyguard and the two, predictably, fall in love.

I loved so much about this! I was in the mood for some action and some romance and this was a perfect mix. I finished it in a single plane ride. The reason I'm giving this 4 stars and not 5 is that the MMC makes some chaotic choices in the final 100 pages of the book and they get over that real quick. I would be beyond pissed if a partner did what he did to me and we would be having a hell of a conversation before moving forward.

Thanks so much to Sylan Young and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for this ARC. Angel of Death will be out May 26th!

This was one of those rare page-turners that I occasionally find here on netgalley that doesn't allow me to do my dishes, cook a dinner, or go to bed at a decent hour without reading, "just one more chapter." This is a fantastic first book from Young and I cannot wait to read more of her works. The characters are developed enough to really care, and the romance matures slowly and believably. I have a few suggestions to really make it top-notch: first, the book is overly long - very long - I enjoyed every page, but it could have been a little shorter. Second, major side characters are not introduced until the last third of the book, which feels a little plot-driven rather than natural. Third, the ending wasn't what I was expecting. Spoiler alert here: I had a very hard time believing one character would fake their own death for a full year bc they were embarrassed about their injuries. This just didn't jibe with what I had read thus far and felt like a plot twist worthy of a soap opera. But that's just my opinion, and the author has the right to lead her characters wherever she wants. I'm still going to be first in line to read the next book in the series :)

Thank you @NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! I'll be posting this review to @flickreadsfiction on May 8.

It’s always a bad day when I have to severely negatively review an ARC. I just can’t get over how DISAPPOINTED I am about this book. The only thing that stood out was the fact that it was really, REALLY bad. So bad I’m speechless that I actually read the entire thing. The things I do to be an honest reviewer…

The writing was so juvenile that it made literally everything sound dumb as hell. And I think Young tried to make up for it by adding a LOT of shocking elements - the good ole “shock and awe” tactic. Spoiler: it didn’t work. Instead I rolled my eyes so hard I gave myself a headache.

And tell me why Serin and Lee seemed to have the same personality by the end of all this nonsense!! I genuinely couldn’t tell the difference between the two and that’s insane since they’re the two main characters who are “in love.” (Also who the fuck says I love you after sleeping with someone for, like, the first time ever? SERIN, YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH TOO MUCH TO DO EMBARRASS YOURSELF LIKE THIS!! GET IT TOGETHER!!!)
