All the Lovely Bad Ones follows two mischievous siblings who reside at their grandmother's haunted inn for the summer. Their tricks end up waking ghosts of the past. The story is entertaining and the art is pretty cute. Some of the pacing felt a bit rushed - the climax and falling action only took the space of a few pages, in comparison to their initial antics taking up a good half of the book. It was a little confusing as to why no one had ever tried to get the children justice before, since the maid and caretaker's family had been looking out for the one ghost child for a long time. Nevertheless I feel like it is worth a read, Mary Downing Hahn has a skill for spooky kids' stories. I have not read the original book so I am not sure if it is completely adapted or if anything has been changed, but it did make me interested to read the original. I felt like this one did not have as many creative panels as the adaptation of Took, but I did like the art better.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
I loved reading this graphic novel. The characters, Corey and Travis, are typical mischievous siblings. In their plot to draw in more guests to their grandmother's inn, they decide to stage a haunting. It's all fun and games until their actions awaken a real ghost from the past. They must unravel the secret history of the inn in order to put the spirits to rest.
Although the main characters in this book are "troublemakers", I couldn't help but love them. It was a fun story, with some very creepy elements! I will definitely be recommending this one to some young readers I know. The illustrations were colorful and well done. They really added to the overall story.
CW: Neglect/death of children (past), talk of suicide (past), but somewhat depicted in the art (reach out if you want more info!)
I really liked this one! It was entertaining, at times creepy and sad, and I loved the art style. This graphic novel is based on the book by Mary Downing Hahn, which I honestly probably won't read because I enjoyed the graphic novel! Corey and Travis, the main characters and siblings, visit their grandmother's purportedly haunted B&B and decide to fake some ghostly occurrences to help her with business! Unfortunately, spirits are awakened which shouldn't have been, and the siblings now have a lot to fix.
In order to help the spirits in the present, Corey and Travis have to investigate and learn about what happened at the house in the past, and this was an aspect that I loved. There is one Big Bad spirit who is CREEPY that the siblings have to contend with as they try to help the spirits of children connected to the house find peace. Corey and Travis start out as merry pranksters but really come into their own as they try to help the spirits they have awakened. One of the only issues for me is that there is a lot of talk about how the siblings "awakened" these sleeping spirits...but it wasn't really clear (to me at least) how they did that.
I've been reading Mary Downing Hahn since I was young, but this a story that I somehow missed when growing up.
What a shame, too, as I feel like it's one of her better ones.
Travis and his sister Corey have been disinvited from returning to summer camp because of their pranks, leaving them in the loving arms of their grandmother and her gorgeous inn for the summer. Ever the trouble-makers, Travis and Corey catch wind of the inn's haunted history and decide to play ghost to drum up some business. New reservations aren't the only thing they're going to drum up... their games have stirred the ghosts that have been sleeping on the land.
Look, this isn't a ghost story that you've never heard before. I suspect I've seen some version of it several times through film and fiction in my life. But this was FUN. It felt a little bit Stranger Things and a little bit Goosebumps-like. And the art was to die for. Honestly, it feels like graphic novel format is how Mary Downing Hahn deserved to be enjoyed all along.
I really liked this book. It was a very simply laid out plot of a couple siblings spending the summer with their grandmother after having been kicked out of summer camp for playing pranks. Then comes the ghosts, the mystery, the hauntings, and the detective work.
This book would be perfect for teens or kids who want to read something spooky in time for October or want to read something that has ghosts in it. I've gotten many teens asking for scary books or thrillers that are similar to this title, so I'll definitely be purchasing this for my library and a few other branches.
What a cute graphic novel! The brother and sister in this story are so likeable and you get to see them grow. I haven’t read the novel this is based on but I loved this! It had cozy spooky vibes and really cute for younger readers.
4/5 ⭐️
This gave off all the spooky vibes and I was so here for it! Definitely going to read this in October. I enjoyed the story and artwork.
This story was okay. I'm not sure of it was because it was in graphic format that I didn't love it or just the story itself was the issue. So far, Wait 'Til Helen Comes is my favorite Hahn book.
In trouble for their antics, brother and sister can't go to their usual summer camp and instead visit Grandma. When they learn of money woes and history of hauntings, Travis and Corey use their skills to create their own hauntings. Ghost experts flock to the motel. All the rooms are booked. Their antics stirred the quiet ghosts. The ghosts have more antics than the siblings. The flashbacks of the spirits' lives feel as real moments of history.
Thank you too Netgalley for this ARC.
This is an excellent, accessible graphic novel. As an adult, I was interested and invested in the story. I wanted to see this one through the resolution.
Kids will love this. It's the right mix of horror, comedy and mystery.
The art was beautiful. I also like that this was a collaboration of numerous artists and creators.
The story follows two main characters, brother and sister, who must help lost souls find peace. As a result the story touches on themes like the importance of keeping promises, injustice, poetic justice, and even the power that someone's words can have over you.
It's also a great coming of age story as well.
This was a fantastic graphic novel adaptation of a spooky novel. I’m not a fan of children’s horror stories, but I did really enjoy this. My students love graphic novels and many of them enjoy spooky books, but I’ve been lacking in this area. This will certainly fill that hole, and I know my students will be thrilled to read it!
I absolutely adored this graphic novel adaptation. Even though I have read this novel I really enjoyed reading this adaptation. It was great to see the characters and descriptions of the setting come to life. I checked out more graphic novel adaptations after this one and I will check out any future ones too.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the advance ebook of this graphic novel!
To start, I absolutely love 'spooky/horror' themed graphic novels and this one does not disappoint. The art style is really pleasing to look at and it is very text based which I enjoy as it offers a meatier story overall.
I think the plot is really unique and the perfect little ghost story. I would have loved a bit more as I do feel that it moves very quickly, especially towards the end, but overall it was really good!
The art is lovely in "All the Lovely Bad Ones Graphic Novel," except of course for the depiction of Miss Ada, the terrifying ghost woman. That art is very well done, but very creepy, as it should be for such a spooky book. The story of the ghost children is heartbreaking, but ultimately satisfactory. This might be a bit too intense for some younger readers, but older middle grade horror fans will find much to love here.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of All The Lovely Bad Ones, A Graphic Novel by Mary Downing Hahn. I loved this author growing up and hadn't read this particular book. When I saw that this book was being turned into a graphic novel, I knew I had to read it. I was ecstatic that my request to read it was approved.
The storyline is an intriguing one and perfect to read around Halloween. It's spooky, not scary. It was engaging and held my interest. Since I'm not the target audience, the story was a little young for me. I'd recommend this story for children between the ages of eight and twelve. I think both females and males would enjoy this story. The illustrations were absolutely stunning. They definitely helped move the story along.
All The Lovely Bad Ones, A Graphic Novel by Mary Downing Hahn has an expected publication date of August 15, 2023. I gave it four out of five stars.
I had never read any of this authors books, but this graphic novel was very good! I can see why the novels are so popular!
A ghost story that I sank my teeth into. I loved the sibling relationship between Travis and Corey, and the mood of creeping horror that infused the book. I only wish that my PDF didn't cut off before the end!
This book has spooky vibes, but it just didn't deliver for me. My biggest complaint is the amount of text on each page; it was so much that towards the end, I just ended up skimming and relying on the illustrations to get the gist of the story. I'm grateful that I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review, but I'm sadly not the target audience here. I hope others enjoy!
All the Lovely Bad Ones Review!
Thank you so much Harper Collins Children’s Books and Netgalley for this gifted e-read, in exchange for an honest review! All the Lovely Bad Ones is out August 15, 2023!
Ahh Haun, bringing back to my childhood with this one! I didn’t actually read this one when I was younger (I thought I did). So this was a pleasant surprise of a read! All the Lovely Bad Oneswas a 4/5 ⭐️ for me! This one brought me right back to middle school. I love the way Haun’s ghost stories just suck you right in, no matter what age! These pictures were gorgeous and a little terrifying for a younger crowd even! It was cheesy and spooky and ended the way most of Haun’s books end. I did wish there was a little more building of characters and plot, but it was a graphic novel so I won’t be too picky. 😄
Let's start by saying that I had no idea this is a book, turned graphic novel. I haven't read the book, but you don't need to read the book to enjoy the graphic novel. The story is a good one! It's filled with spooks and laughs and may even touch a sensitive area for some. I know there were a few moments that had me feeling a little down. For a graphic novel, the story is "chunky" in the best possible way. Sometimes I read graphic novels and feel a little bummed at how little story there is but All the Lovely Bad Ones delivered.
There were times where I was questioning what may happen in the story that left me intrigued to finish. I also like how one of the main characters was a skeptic, that later had a change of heart. It made the story much more realistic. I love how it was genuinely spooky and not cheesy or overdone. I can see this graphic novel being perfect to read around Halloween time.
The illustrations and coloring is absolutely beautiful. I say this a lot, but as an artist I appreciate the color palette and thought that went into designing characters, settings, etc.
