This is an incredibly comprehensive oral history of KSAN, an underground rock station in San Francisco. There is an impressive list of interviewees from Joel Selvin, (pop music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and author of many great books of the San Francisco music scene during the 1960's and 1970's) ; Ben Fong-Torres (Rolling Stone), Greil Marcus (music and culture critic) among many others. He interviews people who were directly involved in KSAN, including DJ's, staff, and others who were part of the scene with the founder Tom Donahue - he and his wife, founded four radio stations, and he tragically died young at age 46 in 1975. This book is a loving tribute to the station, to the zeitgeist of the time in San Francisco, and to Tom. A surprise appearance in the book is Howard Hesseman, who was part of the scene and went on to star in the TV series, WKRP in Cincinnati, playing a DJ!. What makes this book unique is there are links to archival recordings (interviews, DJ introductions, etc.) as well as video clips. It was truly an interactive experience reading this and I felt I was there. I recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and Globe Pequot, Backbeat for an ARC and I left this review voluntarily.
This book was so good. It reminded me of a t. Show I use to watch, wkrp Cincinnati. This was very informative and very well researched. I highly enjoyed this and I loved hearing all the stories.
