A wonderful goose chase of a story! From the first clue left in the Mason jar to the much anticipated conclusion, this middle grade novel is a fun read for budding detectives.
This was a cute book! The kids' ages seemed a bit off to me, however--at times, they certainly acted older than nine and ten. I also struggled with the characters' personalities, as I had a hard time caring about them.
This is a wonderful YA book about Charlie and his sister, Clarissa, who are very disappointed when their parents announce they are going to Lake Fortune to camp for two weeks in the summer. Worst part: no electricity and no cell phones. How will Clarissa survive without her cell phone? But when Charlie finds a jar with a mysterious message in it, the pair get drawn into discovering the clues left by the Mystery Traveler. Will they discover who the Mystery Traveler is before vacation is over? Great coming of age book, in which Charlie and Clarissa redefine their relationship as siblings, their relationship and understanding of their father (who summered at the lake as a boy), and come to appreciate the differences that life can hold. Lovely ink drawings. Recommended.
For anyone who ever went camping or stayed at a cabin during summer vacation, particularly as a kid, this is a story for you. Two city siblings who can't imagine a place with no electricity, no internet or indoor plumbing will discover their worst nightmare as they spend two weeks with their parents at a cabin at a lake in Maine. Or is it their worst nightmare?
A sweet story without being sugary as two kids learn to get along together as they discover a treasure hunt (of sorts) set out for they by the Mystery Traveler as they work on the clues. It is full of fun summer activities, family time, no swearing, but some typical sibling clashes. There are some funny scenes of the kids getting use to the woods and unknown of nighttime sounds.
It is a really nice story to read. The characters are relatable and there are no serious issues--unless you think being without the internet is a catastrophe--and it is just fun. Sit back and enjoy.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Great sibling story! The setting of the lake is very easy to see and feel. This book really takes you away to the lake. The country life parts of the book were fun to read and I think could be interesting fire kids to read. The mystery is a little more simple than I expected, but I think kids will love it. This is a great summer book for kids.
This is a really sweet, clever story. I enjoyed how likable all the characters are. The setting was also a lot of fun to read about too. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, kid or not. 10/10 highly reccomend! Special Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy prior to publication.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
What a fun book. Really enjoyed it and loved the characters. Some amusement thrown in with the mystery. Great job by the author!
Charlie and his sister are horrified when their parents announce they are going to a cabin on Lake Fortune for two weeks, without their phones. Things became even weirder when mysterious things start happening. Soon, Charlie and his sister are on a treasure hunt.
I think the plot here was cute, but I found the writing very choppy. It didn't have a lot of flow for me, which took away from the story.
Uplifting sweet read. Kid focused "mystery". Gives a fun look for a summer adventure of two city kids at their family camp. I easily read this in a day.
Fun read for an adult. A good pallet cleanser between more serious heavy reads. And definitely fun for a parent and child to read together.
5 star recommendation. A terrific read to start the summer off on a happy note.
Thank you #netgalley & Down East Books for the eArc.
I was first interested in this book as I spent time as a kid at my grandparent’s cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have a lot of good memories of bonfires and cookouts. The two main characters, Charlie and Clarissa, also make those types of memories with their parents. Two city kids learn to love of simplicity in the great outdoors and solve clues along the way that lead them into an intriguing and mysterious vacation.
The book started slow, but halfway through really took off! I enjoyed going through the clues with the siblings. It was a nice, short read that had an interesting and sweet ending.
This is a middle grade book that spoke to my kid at heart. I loved this. My only problem was I wish it had been longer! I would have loved to have been them in a cabin by the lake with no electricity and a mystery to solve!! It was perfect!!
I just reviewed The Mystery Traveler at Lake Fortune by Cathie Pelletier. #TheMysteryTraveleratLakeFortune #NetGalley

Growing up in MN and spending many summer vacations at cabins on lakes, this book immediately caught my attention.
This was a fun, quick read with some lighthearted mysteries that kept me intrigued in what was going on.
This book reminded me of other children’s/young adult mystery books I read as a kid and something I will definitely reread with my daughter when she was a little older!
