Owing an acknowledged debt of gratitude to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Morrey offers an alternative - what if a middle aged woman decided to take a skip day? and in the process shares what she really thinks about the bad bosses, stupid rules, difficult mother, and annoying people in her way? and what if she uses her skip day to right an historical wrong, in a very public way? Clover Hendry does just that and more on her day off. The best parts of this book are the clever dialogue and Clover's interaction with those standing in her way. While some of Clover's actions might be a titch on the unrealistic or rough side, it was still a joy to join her for the day. Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for the ARC.

While I was intrigued by the premise & thought some of the aspects were interesting, at the end of the day this book did not keep my attention. I found Clover to be annoying and wish we got to know her & the side characters before her “day off.” Clover isn’t just having a fun, she breaks the law in unnecessary ways and goes too far in the other direction in not caring about those around her. I think the idea was there and I did enjoy some chapters it could have used some more character development up front to keep my interest on what would happen by the end of the day. I decided to call it quits at 58%.
Thank you net galley for the opportunity to read this arc in return for my honest review

I absolutely loved this book. There would be nothing more freeing than living life as Clover lived this one day!

I truly wanted to enjoy this one. As a fan of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I was excited for a modernized female version. However, this one fell flat to me. The day seemed to drag on and on and I found myself having to go back and reread many pages because my mind wandered from the story. It just seemed to drag on too much for me. I grand idea but not so great execution sadly. Will be trying future books from this author as I feel she has much potential.

Let's be honest... I picked up this book because of the bunny on the cover, even though he's looking a little haughty and giving some major side-eye. But I don't recommend you read this book for the rabbit because he only shows up about halfway through the novel. But you should definitely read this novel for Clover.
Clover Hendry has so many irrational fears it's hard to list them all, but she has lived her life beholden to her fears and others' expectations... Until today. She takes potentially-expired medication for a headache and then suffers a minor head injury.
Clover's inhibitions are gone -- she's saying what's on her mind, walking out of her job because meetings are a waste of time, and doing things Clover Hendry would never do. Be prepared to laugh with (at?) Clover as her antics escalate throughout the day, becoming increasingly more wacky.
The grown-up Ferris Bueller entertains as she sticks it to the people who try to ruin her day, but as the novel progresses Clover begins to take a turn into a darker, meaner version of herself. Then all of a sudden, it's not fun anymore. She uses her lack of inhibitions to seek revenge in very public ways, and the reader may stop identifying with Clover when things start getting real.
Outside of the plot, Clover isn't a very good bunny mom so don't emulate her if you want a pet rabbit. Actually, don't emulate her at all if you value your job, your friends, and your freedom. It's funny at first, but you'll be glad you're not Clover by the end.
Recommended for readers who like character-driven novels. There's more than enough plot when you consider that this novel takes place within 24 hours, but Clover's progression and her relationships are the core of the book.
Representation: gay side character

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the early copy of Clover Hendry’s Day Off. It was a a fun concept and I am a big fan of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I requested it immediately. I did enjoy reading, it didn’t quite hot the mark for me. As much as I appreciated the character of Clover and how she decides to push back against her usual people pleasing habits, I think the timeline and pacing of the book was what threw me off a bit. It all takes place in one day and I wish we spent more time some of the adventures she went on.

Could not put this book down. Loved this Ferris Bueler type story about a Mom in England who makes the most out of her day off. Clover's inner monologue was the funniest thing and I was on the edge of my seat wondering where her day would take her next. I also found this book to be inspiring. Clover is a mom of two and such a hard worker. Her story not only showed me how you can really do it all, but how important it is to find balance in your life. This book was honestly so refreshing and funny. I highly recommend this read.

I’m all over the map with this one. I expected to love it…the premise sounded funny, relatable and empowering. There were some moments of each of those…sprinkled between a whole lot of the main character being a jerk. This was just ok for me.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I hate saying this but this was a DNF for me. I felt like I had to keep re-reading the pages to grasp it and it was just too much. I read about 25 percent of it and just couldn’t keep going.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Putnam Books for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. I remember the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was funny and I enjoyed it. I cannot say the same for this book. There were some funny things, and some interesting plot twists. However, it was a mish mash of plot lines. I am not even sure I can sort them out for this review. Clover is a middle aged woman, with a husband, twin teenagers, and a job in television as a producer. Clover has always been what might be called a people pleaser. Today things change. Clover starts the day with a migraine and take some vicodine tablets that are hanging around. Ok, I get migraines, I know it can mess you up- but who keeps expired vicodine hanging around? From there the day progresses, as Clover attempts to go on about her day. She starts by telling off her boss, and taking the day off. Ok, but as the day progresses she goes from taking care of herself, to speaking her mind, to doing things that are unethical , absurd and illegal.Things go so bizarre that I was sure it was going to turn out to be a migraine fever dream! Then, about 3/4 of the way through, things take a truly somber turn ,with deep dark revelations that I certainly was not expecting. I really feel like the author started out with one thing in mind and switched gears a few times. I gave it 3 stars because I finished it, and wanted to finish it, just because I could not imagine how the author could get it together in the end. And frankly, I am not sure she did.

This book had the potential to be so funny, but I personally just could not relate to Clover’s character enough for it to have the intended impact. Clover is in her 40’s and a married mom of teenage twins, and her idea of a “day off” from work was still doing work related meetings and parties, even after a long day of chaos. While I am glad that she stood up for herself in ways that she had never previously done, I felt like this day went on forever and I was exhausted thinking about all the places she went and things she did. If I am having a dinner confronting a parent on how messed up my childhood was, I would certainly not be also going to a work party after! I did appreciate the back story of how she got to this point, but the big day itself just seemed never ending and could have been edited down a bit.
I found myself more interested in Clover’s daughter’s story and what her day would have been like since she also skipped school on the same day Clover cut out of work. Overall, I think this book could be loved by the right audience, but for me it didn’t land. I found myself just wanting to get it over with, and while there were some moments that made me laugh, Clover was abrasive and rude most of the day.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Clover starts the day off over-medicating for a migraine and follows up with a minor head injury. The combination sets in motion an impulsive day off from the office after telling off her boss and waltzing out to see an art exhibit, becoming New Clover along the way while avoiding dealing with a time bomb from her past. This was really good. I've read and enjoyed several of Morrey's books, and I am glad I picked this one up too. Clover was likeable even when she was doing regrettable things, and I couldn't help rooting for her to shed her insecurities and continue standing up for herself. 4 stars

This is such a fun beach read. I immediately liked Clover from the opening lines, and my adoration for her character grew throughout the book.
I will be checking out more of Beth Morreys books and recommending her to others.

This book made me laugh out loud several times. I could not be more delighted with this hilarious story of our heroine Clover Hendry and her twenty four hour romp of finely getting to do exactly what she wants for once in her life. Clover is a busy woman. She is a wife, a full time television producer, a mother with teenage twins who never says no to anyone. She has always put her needs last. She even bakes cookies for school bake sales that her children do not attend anymore! On her last day off she took her cat to the vet, browsed a Co-op and bought some AA batteries, Not exactly the spa day that she really needed. Riveting stuff? Not so much. Clovers mother raised her and her sister to be compliant so that along her life's path other people could continue this process. Clover's mantra has always been: "It's not easy making a fuss. Standing up for yourself can be awkward and embarrassing. Causing a scene is mortifying. Saying no is hard." All this mental baggage has held her back.
However all that changes when on her way to work one day she gets clipped in the head by a fellow passengers briefcase. She is helped to her feet by passersby but something has clicked in her mind, she feels different, powerful and full of chutzpah. Her inner snarkiness has been awakened! And all in a very good way. In the next twenty four hours Clover takes back her world by storm. And most importantly she learns to say no to others who want to monopolize her time, but also learns to say yes to herself.
Cheers to Clover, may she live long and prosper.! Very highly recommended. Five Stars.

i was bored. love the independence but it sucked. she was just being rude throughout the day but i did like the ending with the whole recording.

Yes, I would like to be Clover. Yes, I would like to do what I want and say what I want. Yes, I would like to have a time when I act out of the box and damn the consequences. And that is what Clover does in one remarkable day. She begins the book as "everywoman", but ends the book as a woman in charge of her life and finds she and those around her are better for it. This book makes the reader smile with her, cheer for her, and envy her for her gumption, she is a character that will be remembered and revered.

This book promotes drug use I'm not a fan. DNF
**********************I received an ARC for my honest opinion from NetGalley.******************************

Clover hendry is the kind of woman who doesn’t like to make a fuss- she tips her hairdresser even when her hair cut is horrible, she is good to her very awful mother, and generally does things for others before doing things for herself. Until today! Today, clover, Hendry is taking a day off… She’s living for herself and saying F- it to the world. The real story is why clover got to this point, and what happens when she dies… This book about woman’s strength, resilience, and hope is a wonderful read! I couldn’t put it down… Thinking that gallery for the digital copy

I'm sorry to say it, but guess who couldn't care any less about Clover Hendry and her day off? Me. This is one of those books where you read an entire page and have to go back and reread it because your mind drifted off thinking about something else.
Clover Hendry's literal day off was a complete bore. The entire book was about ONE day that felt like it had entirely TOO many hours in it. An impossible number of hours for all the parties and driving and events that took place. By the end, I was so sure of how unrealistic the timeline and timing of it all was that I lost interest.
And, as somebody who has two rabbits, the way she carried Bigwig around all day in a backpack, handing him off to people, leaving him in random rooms, letting him roam, eating no veggies or hay (or even water that I recall) was the icing on the cake of no way/no how for me. That rabbit would not be nuzzling under anyone's arm or happy.
It was, all around, just an uninteresting read for me.

Clover Hendry is ready to do what she wants and tell everyone what she really thinks of them, at least for one day. Clover is a married mother of two working in the TV industry, and she has had it. She done with being a people pleaser and done being taken advantage of. She takes one day to herself and lets loose, what could possibly go wrong?
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, but our protaganist is a perimenopausal 46 year old woman who needs to say NO to people for once. This book was not the fun romp I thought it was going to be though I did enjoy it very much. I expected more madcap adventures ala “Ferris”, but Clover really gets back at some people that have wronged her in the past. Some of her antics seemed mean spirited and even criminal but I can still see why she would do them. She is just done with the world right now, we would all like to do what she did. I know some readers will have a problem with all the antics that she pulls, but I decide to treat it like a fantasy “what if” read. The one issue I had with the book was the lack of comeuppance Clover received. Sometimes apologies don’t solve everything. Overall I had a pretty good time with this book and would recommend to woman this age in order to live vicariously through Clover, even if just for a day.
Thank you NetGalley and Putnam for my ARC.
