I remember when Kneaders Bakery & Cafe first started popping up! We loved eating there. I've moved far away from where they are at but I still think about the delicious food I've eaten there over the years. So this cookbook was fun to read through and peruse the many different recipes!
I loved that included in the cookbook are several pages with the story of the Worthingtons, the couple who started the restaurant. It was so neat learning about how it came to be. They were retired and bored in retirement so started taking cooking classes and opened their own bakery/cafe! Then it just took off from there and their children have joined in and helped in the business truly creating a family business. I loved learning more about each family member and who does what and who came up with what food ideas!
The pictures are seriously mouthwatering!!! I can't wait to try all of the recipes. I honestly haven't made any yet but will be doing so. I thought I'd have more time to do so but life happened. I think a couple of my first recipes to make will be the Butternut Bisque (yummmmm!!!!), Tomato Soup, the Gourmet Picnic Sandwich (honestly all of the sandwiches sound like they're up my alley), Pumpkin Curry Soup, the Berry and Peach smoothies, Irish Soda Bread, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Bloomin' Jack Bread, To Die For Stuffing, and all of those chocolate cakes, Gingerbread cookies, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies!!!! There's soooo many great recipes in here! This is one I need to grab a hardcover copy of it because it's just got all of my favs in it! Now excuse me while I go make my grocery shopping list and disappear into my kitchen for a few days!!!
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading!!!
This is an interesting cookbook, but I feel it is truly for those who are fans of Kneaders, which is a bakery/cafe with locations in six western states. I don't believe I've ever been to one, but there are lots of recipes in this book that look delicious.
The recipes are in chapters on Breakfast, Salads, Sandwiches, Soups, Drinks, Breads, Dips and SPreads, Stuffings and Coutons, Cookies and Bars, Pies and Puddings, Sweets and Treats. Each recipe has a color photo of the finished dish. and some of them start with a few paragraphs about the recipe's origin or history (all have some sort of intro blurb). Also interspersed in the book are a lot of multi-page profiles on the founding family and relatives, friends, and employees.
One criticism is that quite a few of the recipes, especially in the sandwiches chapter and some of the sweet items, call for a purchased item from Kneaders as an ingredient (bread for the sandwiches, spreads or sauces, etc.). While someone can surely go out and purchase a different bread near them if there is not a Kneaders location nearby, I would have preferred there be an alternative listed within the recipes.
This is a good book to celebrate their 25th anniversary, but with it so heavy on Kneaders history in addition to the recipes, it may have a limited audience.
Morning, Sunshine...
A sweet look into how Colleen and Gary Worthington met and the traditions from both their families. Kneaders history and their nostalgic and unusual recipes are collected here. Particular standouts are the pie and tart sections (I was surprised to see a haupia tart recipe!). Of course, pie crust is made with bread flour here. A lovely, a bit old fashioned and definitely unique cookbook.
Recommend.
I have yet to meet the person who doesn't love the smell of freshly baked bread or revel in the first slice while it's still warm. I'm better than average when it comes to making my family's bread but I'm always looking to improve and/or expand my skills. And this book, well........
As Colleen Worthington shares 25 years of experience baking bread, making soup and mouth watering desserts, she tells the story of how Kneaders Bakery came to be. It's obvious that this was a passion for her and being able to build a business was not an easy road. But build she did and now we reap the benefits of her hard work. Thank you for sharing with us.
I collect cookbooks and have for many years. I have so many that any new ones must be unique, as is Worthington's book. Anyone looking to up their cooking skills should definitely try this one.
This cookbook is fabulous! There are so many recipes and beautiful photos! I dare you to thumb through these pages and not get a craving for something! The recipes are easy to follow and there is a great variety of recipes ranging from breakfasts to special holiday dishes. I’m planning my fall menu from this cookbook! The pumpkin cookie recipe is fantastic! We’ve made it several times already! I definitely recommend this one to beginner cooks and seasoned home cooks alike!
This is a fabulous cook book and beyond. I loved learning about the family and how they started and grew. The recipes are some of my favorite and I will continue to try many more. This is 25 years of some of their best recipes. They are for the most part simple and straightforward with some great tips and pictures. The actual bakery cafés are mostly in the western United States, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from buying the book. Especially with fall coming up, yes, perfect baking season. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The photography was very well done. The stories were nice. I didn’t save any recipes to make but I enjoyed reading the book.
Beautiful pictures and the recipes are easy to follow and most importantly, delicious! I am excited to try more recipes!
Kneaders Bakery & Cafe has been a local favorite for 25 years and I was so excited to find out they are releasing a cookbook! I’m a huge fan of their sandwiches, breads and desserts and this cookbook is packed with all of that along with soups, salads and dips.

I decided to make their Raspberry Almond Muffin Tops and let me tell you, they are one of the best things I’ve ever eaten! Perfectly sweet, soft and fluffy. I could eat a whole batch.

Kneaders Bakery & Cafe Cookbook has pictures with nearly every recipe. There are breads, pies, cakes, cookies sandwiches, soups, etc. IThe cookbook also tells the story behind the Kneaders Cafe and the contributors. The pictures alone will have you itching to try the recipes.
Anyone who has a favorite restaurant and loves certain dishes that they eat there, is usually very happy when that restaurant comes up with a cookbook containing their favorite dishes. Kneaders Bakery and Cafe started in Orem, Utah, and has expanded to several Utah locations, including my city. The bakery products and the restaurant dishes are fabulous, so I was excited to pick up a copy of their excellent cookbook, Kneaders Bakery & Cafe: A Celebration of Our Best Recipes and Memories by Colleen Worthington. This cookbook has interesting stories and vignettes, but the best part is that there are dozens of appealing recipes. In fact, there isn’t even one recipe included that I don’t want to make.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with a list of ingredients followed by step-by-step instructions. Worthington has also included comments at the beginning of each recipe, which tell readers where the recipe originated, or have hints, which are both helpful and fun. This makes it possible for both beginning and advanced cooks to successfully prepare picture-perfect dishes.
One of the best parts of this cookbook is that there are beautiful, professional photographs of almost every recipe. These photos make it difficult to decide which recipe to make next, because the dishes appear to be mouthwatering.
This is one excellent cookbook, and makes it possible for even for those who don’t have a Kneaders Bakery near them to make these yummy dishes.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
An absolutely fabulous cookbook. So many yummy recipes to try, great photos and fun, personal stories along the way.
If you enjoy eating at Kneaders cafes, this is the book for you. If you've never eaten at Kneaders, now you know what you're missing out on. Delicious soups, sandwiches and desserts. Easy to follow recipes.
This was an odd cookbook for me. If you have been to a Kneaders then I suppose it will hold more appeal for you! There are a ton of recipes. There is a lot of talk about the people involved in the kitchens and the authors' families. But it was odd for me to read recipes that say, "Buy x x x kneaders bread" or "what makes this special is Kneader's xyz bread" - but no recipes for the breads. The recipes are nicely presented, there is a large variety, but it is best for someone who knows and loves their food already!
I can not say enough good things about this Cookbook! Typical cookbooks only give basic, sometime flavorless recipes, but with Kneaders Bakery & Cafe you can tell the recipes are perfected with boundless flavors! This book did not only provide readers with recipes, but inspired someone to want to cook and try new tastes. Also, the pictures were stunning, and made ones mouth water in excitement to try these wonderful recipes. Colleen Worthington did not disappoint in the quality of recipes provided. Most cookbooks only have a few good recipes, and the rest appear to be fillers, but not this one. I could see myself really preparing most of the recipes in this book! I felt Colleen really outdid herself when selecting recipes to include. I felt this was not your normal cookbook, but a memoir in the life of Colleen and her husband!
I enjoy the story aspect combined with the recipes. Beautiful pictures. I like that many of the recipes are simple and easy to put together last minute.
I have loved kneaders for a very long time, so I was over the moon excited when I saw this cookbook. Their soups are my particular favorite, and all the recipes I love most are on here. I plan on still giving Kneaders plenty of business, but I'm so excited to impress all of my family members and friends with these recipes too. I've tried several so far, and the Irish Stew has been my absolute favorite.
This book is absolutely worth your money, and it's so full of recipes that it'll take months to try everything I want. With the fun addition of stories about the growth of Kneaders as a business, this cookbook is everything I could have wanted it to be.
I love Kneaders and I was so excited to receive this ARC. Thank you Shadow Mountain!
I’ve made a few of these recipes and they are as yummy as you find in the cafe. Yay! The Southwest BBQ salad is a favorite. We are diary free at our house so there are a few recipes we had to change a little and a few recipes we are unable to.
We can’t wait to add the book to our collection!
Kneaders Bakery and Cafe was eye opening! I expected this to be a bread book and it is so soooo much more. The recipes are to die for! I am really happy with this book and I highly recommend it!

This cookbook has all of the staple recipes you would expect from a cafe that makes its goods from scratch. Recipes include breads and sandwiches, soups and salads, pies and pastries, and all kinds of desserts
There are several unique recipes in the book including cinnamon French Toast stuffed with jam and mascarpone, raspberry bread pudding, and lasagna soup.
