I can’t honestly review this book because I gave up and I rarely do that! I just felt like the storyline was too much like other stories I’d read and couldn’t get into it.
Teddy Angstrom has had enough grief with the loss of her sister at a young age. Angie disappeared and was never heard from again - and now, Teddy's father has taken his own life. As Teddy and her mother try to cope with this news, Teddy finds her father's online inquiries into Angie's disappearance. Angie's father was Teddy's father's brother, so the girls were both sisters and cousins. Teddy's father was determined to find out what happened to his niece. As Teddy dives into this murky world, she finds herself drawn to different persons of interest - she begins a relationship with the family's old gardener and meets a woman named Mickey who strongly resembles Angie. She uncovers a host of secrets while sliding off the deep end herself.
I enjoyed this story - it was well-constructed and powerful, with many moments of beautiful writing. I did not love Teddy as a character, but I think this was the author's intent. Teddy is a mess, and part of her journey is coming to terms with that. This title would be great for book clubs or readers who like dark tales like Harriet Tyce's books.
Rabbit Hole -- the concept of the book -- had me really excited to dive into it. Though it was generally enjoyable, I don't think the execution was fully there, making it a middle of the road read.
I really wanted to love this book because the description was so promising, but unfortunately I couldn’t finish this.
Going into reading this book I didn't expect much but wow the author is someone to look out for. Teddy is a strong character who put her big girl pants on and did what she needed to for her family and closure. In this day and age of Reddit conspiracies, this book was refreshing. I could not put this book down with all the twists and Reddit posts. I will be on the lookout for more of the authors books.
I enjoyed this book- there was good character development and an interesting set up. The ending is perhaps more realistic to life, but I was expecting more of a satisfying conclusion.
Personally, I really liked this concept of a book. I didn't mind the constant social media mentions. However, I really could not get a long with the format style. It's interesting and a stylized choice, for sure, but trying to read it like that on my Kindle gave me a headache. I ended up DNFing it. When it is printed, I'll be sure to pick it up again, though, because I am in love with the concept.
I’d like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. This book follows Teddy, after her father commits suicide 10 years after her sister has gone missing and has never returned. She starts to piece together things on her dad’s computer as she falls down a Reddit hole. Lines get blurry as she stops going to work, talking to an internet sleuth in person and reconnects with an old friend. An interesting read from start to finish. Completed in one sitting.
This one was not for me. Very slow getting into the story, and characters that did not set with me once I finished the book.
I have been seeing this book on Netgalley. Finally I read it. The cover is so appealing and mysterious. Ten years ago Angie disappeared and now Mark, Theodora/ Teddy’s father killed himself. The unexpected & suspicious deaths are happening and Teddy’s mom past is poignant. Teddy ventures on a quest to get to the bottom of the unsolved mysteries of death/ murder. But she finds herself falling in a rabbit hole and some secrets gets unveiled too. Will she be able to solve the mystery of her sister’s disappearance and father’s death? She finds clues and unexpected links but the question is at what cost will she uncover the secrets? Will the investigation keep her life at stake and blur the line between life and death?
The characters are mysterious and clever. The backstory of characters were poignant. Loved how Teddy connected the dots but felt sad for her in the end. The mysterious past of her mother and the letter written by her father were so heart aching. This is a nail biting and heart wrenching thriller with unsolved mysteries , devastating past, tangled secrets, growing obsession towards a man and through investigation keeping life at stake.
Thank you Netgalley, Author and Publisher.
This was an excellently-plotted, really compelling mystery/thriller/character study which explored grief and all of its effects, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was engaging enough to keep me totally entranced; I personally loved the rural New England setting, too, as someone who grew up in a similar place (rural Vermont, which is also mentioned in the book). Our main character Teddy is an absolute disaster, and is a great example of a character who is compelling but not always sympathetic, though I wished for a little more development of some side characters The mystery part was very well done, and I thought the integration of the Reddit threads was really excellent and a great way of pulling the reader in.
All in all, a very good read, and definitely one I'd recommend, especially for those who like the ideas, but are often disappointed by the execution, of popular thrillers. (I am included in this group.) Thanks so much to Soho Press and Netgalley for the advance copy!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review!
I greatly enjoyed Kate Brody's Rabbit Hole, as it was deeply evocative and compelling. Each character sprang to life from the pages, and I appreciated how realistic the text felt, especially in its portrayals of grief. I would happily ready more by this author.
Incredibly fresh and original, but also readable and fascinating from start to finish. I loved this and devoured it so quickly. It's the perfect thriller for our current times, full of mysteries and thrills.
Such a unique take on true crime/thriller. I loved the mix of suspense, tension and humour - the writing is incredible and skilfully done. Overall I thought this was a really great take on your typical crime thriller and I would recommend.
Thank you so much netgalley for the chance to read this book! I literally devoured this one in one sitting! This was my first Kate Brody book and won’t be my last. The writing was amazing and I enjoyed the sarcasm and humor the characters had. The books ending was not what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. The whole book makes you question if you can trust anyone around you. Great read!
A force of nature in a book. It went above and beyond my expectations. The writing was gripping and intense.
