I found this book to be both really interesting and very informative. The book is full of lots of photos and diagrams for how to design the art playroom. I like that it included different age groups.
I liked the section about invitations to create. Open ended art prompts is such a great idea. So many prompts I can’t wait to use with my son. He’s especially excited for the produce prints.
Overall, a great tool for parents and/or educators to help children discover art!
This book offered some really interesting options for how to create a safe space for kids to craft and experiment with art in the home. I found that it tended to be more about the things that could be done once the space was set up, so it was a bit misleading as I was truly hoping for more design inspiration for my home. At the same time, I do regret not having read this when my children were younger and could have truly benefitted from a space like this. I agreed wholeheartedly with the idea that children want to be where the rest of the family is, and isolating them in a remote playroom is often not the way to get them to do things. At the same time, there is balance because sometimes there really isn't space where the family is to introduce something, even a small something, like this. In our first home, the main floor would not have had space for even a small table, so our only option would have been a basement playroom. Unfortunate but true.
Once the book moved beyond the space and how to set it up, which was pretty quick, the ideas and inspiration for what to use and how to get children engaged with art was interesting, albeit not for my home and my kids who are beyond the age of learning how to use scissors. But I can still appreciate that the book does a good job of covering different media, staging up so that it captures options for younger and older artists, and giving options for "extend and enrich." All in all, a great way for someone trying to inspire to get, well, inspired.
The Art Playroom is a well thought out book that is perfect for anyone home educating or wishing to expand their child's learning at home.
With easy to read pages and demonstrative photographs each activity is easy to follow and the supplies are easy to locate.
The idea of an art playroom is a nice one and possibly quite an American concept. We have a play space and art cupboard but I see some great points I'd like to implement in our own home.
I was gifted a digital copy of The Art Playroom in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thanks NetGalley
This is a wonderful book with beautiful pictures. I have 2 young boys and already have many art supplies. But I still got so much good information from this book. I will be setting up and purchasing some materials recommended.
With the popularity of home organization thanks to The Home Edit and Marie Kondo, this book feels very on trend. As someone who has zero experience in setting up kid-friendly spaces, I can definitely see wanting something like this for my kids. And, the art projects included in the second half of the book make it useful beyond just the setup of the room.
That being said, this book felt like it assumed a certain level of affluence that is not available to everyone. I would have liked to see more DIY/ thrifting/ low cost options included for parents who were trying to do this on a budget. However, for those that have the resources, this book feels like a great guide for making, and using, a kid-friendly art space.
Every parent needs to read this book! I love the tips for setting up and arranging an art space, I’ve already started to plan a space in my house from what I learned. The invitation to create ideas with instructions are so helpful.
Thank you, Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry, for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
