Not a good read.
For the last ten years, the small, claustrophobic town of West Wilmer has been struggling to understand one thing: Why did it take young Grant Dean twenty-seven minutes to call for help on the fateful night of the car accident that took the life of his beloved sister, Phoebe? If he'd called sooner, she might still be alive.
As the anniversary of Phoebe's death approaches, Grant is consumed by memories of that night on the bridge and everything he lost: his future, his reputation, his little sister. And the secret he's been keeping all these years is suffocating him. But he and Phoebe weren't the only ones in the car that night. Becca was there. She knows what happened—and she will do anything to help Grant keep his secret.
Everyone in West Wilmer remembers Phoebe, but only June remembers that another person was lost that night. Her brother Wyatt has been missing for ten years and now June is alone—no family, no friends. Until someone appears at her door. Someone who may know where Wyatt went all those years ago. Someone who knows what really happened on the bridge that night. Someone who is ready to tell the truth.
Sorry this wasn't my cup of tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for giving me an advance copy.
Twenty-Seven Minutes is much more of a dramatic book as opposed to a mystery. I found that there are some mystery elements, but for the most part it was a story involving multiple characters all dealing with grief in some capacity.
The story first opens with an accident on a bridge, and Phoebe Dean is fatally injured. The question that comes into play is why her brother waited 27 minutes to call for help. The story then jumps to 10 years later where we meet June, who recently lost her mother to cancer. We find Grant who still is navigating through the grief of losing his sister and being the one who caused it, and Becca who was also in the car the night of the accident.
I had a hard time really getting into this story. I was hoping for a very fast-paced thriller but found this to be a very slow burn. I mean, really slow. I considered DNF it a couple of times, but based on other reviews that said the ending was fantastic, I pushed on. The last 10-15% of the book was worth keeping on with the story because I did not see any of it coming. The ending redeemed the book for me.
Overall, it was an okay book. I would read more from Ashley Tate in the future.
Thank you, Poisoned Pen Press, and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
#twentysevenminutes #NetGalley A dark, edgy thriller that will have you wondering who doesn't have a secret in this novel?!
Ten years earlier there was an awful car accident that took the life of Phoebe Dean. Her brother, Grant was driving that night. Why did it take him twenty-seven minutes to call for help after the accident? Would she still be alive if he'd called sooner?
Ten years later and three days before the tenth anniversary of Phoebe's death, there's another accident on the same bridge where she died. Now wounds that still hadn't entirely healed were broken open again. The rumors and gossip are starting up again. Everyone has questions about what happened that night. Some people fear the truth. What will happen when it is finally revealed?
It was just a terrible accident. Wasn't it?
I'd seen the mixed reviews for Twenty-Seven Minutes so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was intrigued by the description though and really wanted to give it a try.
I'm glad I did. I found this story entertaining and was excited to find out what happened that fateful evening. The story is told from multiple points of view and alternates between past and present. As what happened ten years ago is slowly revealed we learn more about the characters involved in and surrounding the accident.
An excellent debut suspense story with some great twists! I am really looking forward to reading more from Ashley Tate!
Ten years ago a young girl died tragically and the older brother of one of her friends disappeared. It looked like a classic accident except for one small problem, a twenty seven minute delay between her time of death and the call to authorities for help. Now, ten years later, the girl’s mother is holding a memorial for her and has, as a result, brought everyone back together again. The book is written with a myriad of narrators, each telling his or her own stories about the then and the now. At times it became so convoluted that I ended up putting it aside for a while. I found the ending to be very appropriate and sympathetic, which made up for much of the confusion. Thanks to Net Galley and Poisoned Pen Press for an ARC for an honest review.
Dark, disturbing and a bit slow. Add the fact that none of the characters were likable, made it a bit of a struggle to read. I was surprised by the ending and found it satisfying.
For the past ten years, a community has wondered why it took Phoebe’s brother twenty-seven minutes to call for help after a catastrophic car accident leaves her dead. Now, in the days leading up to Phoebe’s memorial service, speculations are swirling about what really happened that fateful night.
I really wanted to love this book. It was told from multiple points of view, which I love, and it started off with a really powerful chapter that hooked me, but I struggled to stay engaged because it felt a bit repetitive at times. Perhaps I was hoping for a more fast-paced thriller, so anyone that loves a slow-burn, character-driven mystery should check this one out.
Thank you to Ashley Tate, Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of the book for an honest review.
I ended up DNF this book, it is probably a good mystery but the car accident gave me PTSD. i have read a few other books that trigger my PTSD but I wanted to read them so badly I pushed through it. In this case, I was not willing to do so but i am sure others would enjoy this book.
Overall this was an entertaining book and I enjoyed the writing. I did not see the ending coming!
I am not traditionally a thriller reader but this book had me hooked from the beginning, will definitely be looking into reading more by this author, and more in the thriller genre!
I enjoyed how fast paced and short the chaptes were, along with the interesting storyline this ended up being such a quick read.
What a great book! I couldn't put this down. The storyline was unique from other books that I've read in the past.
When I first started reading I couldn’t wait to find out the truth behind what happened with Phoebe. However I couldn’t connect with any of the characters and the book was so slow that I stopped caring as much. I’m not sure if it was because the book was such a slow burn but I found the end to be a let down.
This one is going to be a very popular thriller this year. It is highly entertaining and filled with lots of plot twists and omg moments! Go in blind and enjoy!
Book Review: Twenty-Seven Minutes by Ashley Tate
Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
As I delved into Ashley Tate's novel, Twenty-Seven Minutes, I was immediately drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding Phoebe Dean's untimely death and the secrets that unfolded in the small town of West Wilmer. The cover art of the book is captivating and sets the tone for a suspenseful read that promises to unravel dark truths and hidden motivations.
The story revolves around the aftermath of a tragic car accident that claimed Phoebe's life, raising questions about her brother Grant's delayed call for help and the lingering mystery surrounding that fateful night. Tate skillfully weaves a narrative filled with grief, ambition, and secrets, all set against the backdrop of a town haunted by a past tragedy.
While the writing in Twenty-Seven Minutes is engaging and easy to follow, I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by the predictability of the plot. Despite the multiple points of view that offer insight into the characters' lives and emotions, the storyline felt lacking in surprises and twists that would have elevated the reading experience.
However, one aspect that stood out in the book was the well-developed characters, each with their own distinct personalities and motives. Tate excels in portraying the complexities of human nature, making the interactions between the caretaker, secret girlfriend, missing bad boy, and former football star both compelling and realistic.
In conclusion, Twenty-Seven Minutes is a decent debut novel that showcases Ashley Tate's talent for crafting relatable characters and exploring themes of grief and hidden truths. While the plot may fall short in terms of originality and suspense, the strength of the character development makes this book worth a read for fans of contemporary literary suspense.

This was a fantastic book and one I would read again! It had the thrills and fun that I would expect from a thriller while also making sure I never knew what was around the corner. I would recommend if you are into thrillers!
Twenty Seven Minutes is Ashley Tate’s first novel but you would not know by reading it. This is a well written thriller that will keep the pages turning. Although for me, I thought this one started out a bit slow but when it when it kicked in it kept me engaged until the end. It is told in dual timelines which keeps you informed. The characters, although are many, the main ones are strong, well developed and dark. There are many intriguing dark secrets with a big twist at the end. I enjoyed this novel and hope Ms. Tate has another coming soon.
Thank you NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press and Ashley Tate for this thrilling story to read and review. As always, the opinions expressed are strictly my own.

After three attempts in finally made it through this book. So many point of views taking forever. None of the characters are likeable. Even as adults they sound like childish teenagers. While I didn't love this book, I am open to trying another book by Ashley Tate.
This one felt a bit immature for me, I think the characters themselves just didn’t work and I didn’t enjoy them at all. The buildup also took a little too long for me and I was underwhelmed in the end.
The aftermath of a really horrible tragedy is always hard but even more so when the past comes back to haunt you and push you to tell the truth. So many things were happening throughout this book but was still a really good read.
Twenty Seven Minutes is a slow burn. While it kept me guessing what exactly went down that night, it felt repetitive and all the characters were semi immature. I didn’t exactly like any of them. But for a debut novel, this book wasn’t all that bad. With some experience under her belt, the author will only improve and I will look forward to reading more from her.
An absolutely phenomenal read! Ashley Tate keeps you on your toes as you go on an emotional roller-coaster that leaves you feeling breathless and shook! With twists and heartbreaking moments, you will feel like you are experiencing the emotions of the characters of 'Twenty-Seven Minutes' in real time. And just when you think you know what's going on, you're left picking up your jaw again as another insane twist ties together this incredible story!
