He was interested in her properties for the expansion of his business empire while she wanted it for her drams and tribute to her late husband. They tried to make their relationship a business negotiation and arrangement but the heart knows what’s what. Excellent story of a strong heroine who stick to her guns and keeps her word as well as the hero who had a huge arsenal to use to gain advantage but his honour prevents it. True love placed them in an even playing field.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
I am just going to say do yourself as a reader a favor, block out a couple of hours and truly settle down with this great book.
In the first book in the series I found the leading lady to be tough to like and in this one I found the leading man touch to like. At the beginning Iain is almost sociopathic in his actions to gain whatever he wants. He really doesn't seem to care about anyone and has no real end goal other than to have "more". I do worry over what would have happened to him had he never crossed paths with Clare. It was probably somewhere around the middle of the book before I started to change my mind about him. And it wasn't really until it was clear how heartbroken he was over losing Clare that I would say I liked him. Clare, on the other hand, was an easy character to like. She's smart and not intimidated by the men around her. My heart broke a little for her when she realized her father had no interest in her beyond what she could gain him financially. Once you find out about her true relationship with her deceased husband you realize how poorly she had been treated by all the men in her life and why she would be reluctant to give Iain a chance to get too close emotionally. One thing I didn't understand about Iain was why he didn't bring up the gentlemen's agreement he had with Jonathan right from the beginning. That would have made for a short book, but from a business standpoint would have made more sense. I also wish there had been more regarding Clare's past miscarriages. They are mentioned in passing at the beginning, but I thought there might have been a part with her telling Iain about them, especially since she later tells him she can't get pregnant. One of my favorite chapters in the book was the one toward the end of the book with Chalmers as the narrator - it not only added more information for the story, but was kind of humorous as well.
