Summary:
Risa Amakawa is a prepper. She’s prepared for her tests, the rain, and pretty much any situation that may come along. Sure, her bag is frequently too heavy because of that, but it works for her.
One day, Risa witnessed a young man get hurt and left behind on the street. She could have kept walking, but it was raining, and he needed help. So she offered him her spare umbrella and directions to the nearest hospital. Little did she know this act of kindness would change her life forever.
Review:
Oh wow! Love, That's an Understatement Vol. 1 is such a shockingly sweet story, but not for the reasons you might expect. The story is all about two characters trying to take care of one another and make things right. It's cute, quirky, and sweet.
This series has a strong foundation in the romcom genre. We have a girl stepping up to take care of an injured guy, only to realize she now can't get rid of him. Now she's embroiled in his drama, but he's committed to caring for her.
There's more to it than that, but those are the broad strokes. I liked the character development, but I do feel like there could have been more. Likewise, while I enjoyed the plot, I feel like I probably read enough to appreciate it fully, so I'm not sure if I'd continue the series.
If you're looking for an opposites attract romance, be sure to check out Love, That's an Understatement Vol. 1.
Highlights:
YA Romance
Shojo
Slice-of-Life Style
Saving the Day
Will I continue the series? Maybe
This was such a fun and quick read!
We follow Risa who one day sees this guy laying in the street because he got beat up. This then leads to Zen, said guy, wanting to repay Risa for her kind gesture which then leads to them forming a friendship and perhaps something more??
I enjoyed myself from start to finish, a cute, funny and romantic ya manga.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for giving me this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Love, That's an Understatement, Vol. 1 by Fujimomo was such a great manga volume. OMGness I loved this. This is like an edgier version of Honey So Sweet and I am here for it. The story follows a slightly uptight star student who has trouble accepting help. She crosses paths with a delinquent, helping him out and suddenly he starts showing up everywhere on his motorcycle trying to pay her back, and she ends up meeting his friends along the way. A very cute and fun shojo romance manga with a delinquent twist.
God I feel like I've read every single romance style manga ever. Yet this one had very very solid characters which helped me enjoy it more than expected. It's funny how often the troupes I don't like are only acceptable to me in manga. This was a cute start, though, so I'll be continuing. 3.5 out of 5, I'll bump it to a 4.
Thank you to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this manga. Now perhaps this is because of another series I mentioned last week that is similar to this but different or something else, but I liked this a lot more than I expected to. It is a high school story yes, but there is a difference than the others as far as the emotions and the mental health issues that are presented. Overall, I am excited to see what happens next. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars
stop this is so cute... She's a tsundere, he's a carefree caring one. Always gives pickup line but unfortunately always boldly rejected by her. this is too sweet comical and romantic at the same time.
this was precious!! I loved both our characters, the art and story. The FMC was so different from what we usualy get in a Shojo a bit more of a black cat type. And our bad boy hero is so much more golden retrievery than expected.
Can't wait to keep reading this series
I really enjoyed this book!
So cute 🥰 and so good 😊
I really thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the book
Cute high school romance where I can't wait to see where it goes! I always loved a bad boy, good girl storyline.
Risa is a studious, aloof girl who has difficulty depending on others. However, one day, when she spots a beat-up delinquent in the rain, she offers him her umbrella. Now he's in her debt and he's determined to return the favor.
Love, That's an Understatement, Vol. 1 by Fujimomo is an opposites-attract high school romance that unfortunately fell flat for me.
Now, I’m typically a sucker for delinquent romances along the lines of My Little Monster, but the fast-paced romance doesn't feel earned in this one, and I wish the story had slowed down to take the time to develop its characters and relationships better.
The artwork itself is lovely, but I hope the characters get fleshed out as the story progresses because so far only Risa feels like the three-dimensional character within the cast and I really want to see more vulnerability and nuance from Zen because right now he's basically just an overly-confident love interest.
This was so darn cute! I love the other series by this author, Lovesick Ellie, so I was incredibly excited to read this. I enjoyed it very much. The art style is lovely and it seems like a promising shojo romance series.
A wonderful quick read which I would love to add to my physical shelf someday. It is just really beautiful art wise and story telling as well.
I love a good opposites attract romance with some gorgeous art. I think this was a goo introductory volume to set the stage for great and exciting development in Risa and Zen's relationship. Looking forward to seeing their growth in future volumes.
I enjoyed giving this a read!
Risa Amakawa is a high school student who carries a heavy bag that has items ready for different situations whether it is an umbrella or first-aid kit. One rainy evening, she happens to come across a delinquent, Zen Ohira that got beaten up and saves him. You could also call it fate since they begin to cross path since their first meeting and he's there to save her even if she didn't any help.
This romcom manga has a delinquent male lead and independent smart female lead trope. It's not an uncommon trope but most of the times, I could enjoy reading lots of manga with common tropes like this one.
As for Zen Ohira, he is a "happy go lucky" guy who may seem a little odd, but he's a likable and cool character! I find him kind of funny too.
On the other hand, Risa is independent but she has her own struggles that I can relate to on some level. I am looking forwards to more sides of Risa and because she is used to being on her own, Zen is someone I believe will be a great companion for her.
Additionally, I really like the symbolism of the heavy bag she has. It is explained in the volume.
The art or illustration style is really nice as well.
I definitely recommend adding this to your tbr!
The art style is really cute and I love the premises so far. I look forward to watching Zen and Risa's relationship blossom. I think this was a strong first volume.
This was a really fun, cute first volume and I absolutely loved the art style for it too!
I really liked Risa as a main character and I think she and Zen balance each other as well. I also really liked the depth to their characters that really brought them to life!
I feel like this is going to be such a cute series, it was making me internally squeal and want to kick my feet a few times and I feel like the relationship between them is really good so far! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
A fun manga I haven’t seen before. As a fan of shoujo manga, this one brings a new theme into the mix
It was ok didn’t love it didn’t hate it, cute art but yeah I really didn’t get into it
Rating ⭐️⭐️
First of all I want to thank netgalley for providing me with a copy of the first volume of this manga.
Love, That's an Understatement tells us the story of Risa, who is a model student, although a bit cold, she doesn't usually socialize and has a hard time expressing her feelings, one day she meets a boy who is being beaten by other students, she comes to help him giving him the recommendation on how to get to the hospital.
Thinking that she will never see him again, she leaves, however, she meets him again, Zen is the opposite of our protagonist, she constantly gets into trouble, has problems at school, and is a sociable person.
will come to change the world of laughter
It is the first volume but everything happens, and it leaves you wanting to continue reading. The relationship of the protagonists is slow burn, it starts normal and little by little they relate more until they reach friendship and a little more.
I hope that volume two will come out later because I want to continue seeing how this couple evolves.
I give it a 4.5 out of 5
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this manga to review!
I have heard a lot of positive things about Fujimomo's other title, Lovesick Ellie, so I was excited to review this title and see if it would live up to the hype. I loved the art style throughout this manga, as well as the characters. Despite the story being a little too unbelievable compared to my usual taste, the characters were endearing and well written which made me want to keep reading. I would say if you like shoujo manga then definitely give this one a try!
