I received an e-galley of Love, That's an Understatement by Fujimomo from Kodansha Comics via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Such an interesting meet cute between the two characters in this story. I love a good shojo manga and I really enjoyed the development of these two in this one thus far. I'm looking forward to seeing how they both develop, as they're set up to be so different from one another.
At first I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this but by the end I was kicking my get and squealing over how cute some of these panels were. This story has so much potential and I can’t wait to see where they take it!
I reviewed this title for Booklist. Please see Booklist for the complete review and full feedback regarding this title.
Delinquent boy and good girl? yes please
First I want to point out that the artstyle is gorgeous!
This was a super cute and fun read, I loved the dynamic between the two main characters. I found the story was quite fast paced which I didn't mind and I already am attached to the main characters. The heroine is fairly reserved and closed off but seems to long for connection, while the hero is an outgoing delinquent with a heart of gold. I can't wait for more from this series!
Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really hope you all have pacemakers because this one is going to stop your heart. I present to you the extremely powerful romance manga Love, That's an Understatement; kindly provided by Kodansha so I could review it.
This manga tells the story of one Risa Amakawa, a young girl who carries everything you could possibly imagine in her school bag. One day on her way to cram school she encounters a local delinquent after his attackers are already finished with him. While others just pass by, not wanting to get involved, Risa instead offers him an umbrella and directions to a nearby emergency room. Turns out that delinquent is something of a gang leader and wants to pay Risa back no matter what.
This is Zen Ohira, he has a motorcycle and a bizarre fixation with standing on objects to be slightly elevated off the ground. He's willing to help pretty much anyone and that definitely clashes with Risa's stubborn desire to never rely on someone else. You see, Risa is carrying around a lot of emotional BAGGAGE (Do you get it? It's called a metaphor, look it up sweetheart.) and she profoundly struggles with behaving or speaking genuinely. I know it's mean, but I never get tired of watching her fail socially.
These two have such good chemistry that they should be on the periodic table. A periodic table that you can be sure Risa has in her bag just in case there's ever a pop quiz about it. It's so good, it's so funny, and why isn't volume 2 out yet?
Risa spies a high schooler who got beaten up on the street and offers him kindness. In return, he starts insinuating himself in her life, helping her out in ways that makes her feel uncomfortable since she prides herself in being independent. The storyline is geared for young adults, with its fanciful scenarios of interpersonal relationships that are appealing to youngsters. I rate it highly for the feeling of exhilaration of young love. There's not much of a plot, just the minutiae of random interactions of an awkward girl who falls in love with a bad (but kind) boy.
This is so cute Arkward Risa and Zen totally falling for her ... it was perfection. I want more volumes the art style was great and this will become another got to manga in the future.

Plot:
Love, That's an Understatement is a classic delinquent x Studious MC tale. It's precious, fun, and over all comforting to the eyes. Not to mention he loves cats... Big win.
Art:
Another art style I found to be a bit more on the simplistic side for manga, yet perfect at encapsulating emotion and intensity.
Overall:
I would give this a solid four stars. It mimics some ideas that are fairly common in shoujo, yet offers some new insight that I found fun and enjoyable.
I'm glad that I had a chance to read this beatiful manga because the story and the art was PERFECT in it.
The story is about a bad boy and a good girl (I won't write anything further because I might spoiler the story).
The manga was really enjoyable. I loved seeing the development of their relationship, honestly I think they were super cute!!!!!!!
Overall it was super cute and sweet romance (sometimes my theet were aching from it, in a good way)
I definetly recommend it to everyone who wnats to read a sweet, cute and enjoyable romance manga.
I can't wait ofr the vol. 2!!!
A-MA-ZIN-G is the first volume. The illustrations are lovely, and the love story...Risa is a cold girl who is disconnected and ready for anything. One day, he encounters a wounded teenage delinquent named Zen in an alley. She resolves to save him, and he decides to repay the favour. The two's relationship could be better. In fact, the two have a sort of enemy-to-lover relationship (similar but not overly so) ...Risa comes out as distant and skeptical from the start. While Zen is adorable... Mamma Mia is cute... Both protagonists have beautiful characters and personalities, which I love.I enjoyed "Love, that's an understatement," and I can't wait to see it again. Great details in the art and story, Zen and Risa are understandable and work well as the lead couple
GIVE ME THE SEQUEL!!!
Spare eraser? Check. Extra folding umbrella? Check. First aid kit? Check. Cool and collected high school student Risa Amakawa has something in her heavy bag for every situation, and the last thing she needs-or knows how to ask for-is anyone's help. When she saves a beat-up delinquent in the park one rainy evening, she refuses any sort of repayment. But it turns out that saving the notorious Zen Ohira buys her the attention of some unsavory characters. As Zen keeps swooping in to help her out of one pickle after another, her feelings about relying on anyone but herself-and her feelings toward Zen-slowly begin to change…
A first volume A-MA-ZIN-G. The illustrations are really amazing and the love story...
Risa is a very cold girl, detached and ready for anything. Literally. One day, he meets a young delinquent, Zen, in an alley, wounded. She decides to rescue him and he decides to return the favor then. The relationship between the two does not start in the best way. In fact, between the two there is a sort of enemy-to-lovers relationship (similar but not too much)...
Risa, right from the start, appears very detached and skeptical. While Zen... Mamma mia is so cute... Both protagonists have a great character and a great personality and that's something I really appreciate.
In general, I loved "Love, that's an underestimate" and I can't wait to catch up on it.
I thank Netgalley, the publisher and Fujimomo for sending me the ARC copy of this manga in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Love, That's an Understatement, Volume 1 was so stinking cute!! I loved the relationship between the main couple and how they met. The MMC wanted to return the favor for her being kind when no one else was and even though she is very blunt and doesn’t show emotions easily, he still knows that she’s kind and caring beneath all of that.
As for the FMC, I liked how the MMC came off as a delinquent and he fought a lot, but she didn’t judge him and his friends for their lifestyle and treated them like human beings unlike the people around them.
I can’t wait to read the next volume!!
I got sent this book in exchange for an honest review.
This manga was an adorable little high school romance. I love the bad boy and good girl romance. It was a quick read with lovely art work. I can't wait to get the paper back and have a physical copy and to read the next volume.
My first real Manga read! It was so adorable and reminded me of my dramas that I love to watch so much! The romance?? Adorable! I also enjoyed the pictures in thos Manga! Very cool!
This is the CUTEST manga I have read in awhile. The art is fabulous. The romance is, so far, realistic. The characters are interesting...It's great! I have nothing negative to say about it. So cute!
I love how Risa feels compelled to be ready for any scenario and every time something new is thrown at her, she learns to be prepared for that too...after she freaks out about it a little. She comes off cold and harsh, but like Zen, the reader learns that she really is this kind caring person who is just awkward around other people.
Zen is the classic caring delinquent who decides he likes her after she was the only person who stopped to see if he was alright. His group of friends, his "crew," have banded together with him as their leader in order to protect themselves from what can only be called the "alpha" delinquent squad from their school.
The two of them together is absolutely adorable!
I can't wait to get my hands on volume two!!
Oh my goodness, this was perfection! The characters, the artwork, the storyline and I love how the person who would normally be the bad-boy romantic rival was completely put on-point that his garbage was not going to be tolerated by the MC h. YES, THANK YOU!
The MC H is just a big CinnaRoll, the MC h is an M&M, hard shell hiding the soft core under it all and it's just MAGIC. Yes, this isn't a NEW storyline or characters, but it's being done in a fresh (to me) way. It resonated with me. I think most of us at one point or another tried to go it all on our own and it just didn't work. Hopefully we all had someone to help us who we could lean on when the wheels begin to fall off like the MC h does in this.
SIGH.
5, Chef's kiss PERFECT, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
So, one day our female main character, Risa, helps a boy who is all beaten up. The boy, Zen, now acts like he has a debt to pay her. And then add all the usual stereotypes of the genre: she is a good girl, studies well, quiet, he is a bad boy, a delinquent, rival gangs, he saves her, yada yada. I make it sound like I didn’t enjoy the story, I actually did. I guess it suited my mood perfect at the time and I flew through the story. My main issue was how fast the romance developed, they kiss in this volume, and I prefer it when there is pining. Overall I would recommend, but this is not the best of it’s genre.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading the first volume of this manga, the plot is rather straightforward, lighthearted, and with low stakes.
I usually am not one for mangas, but, in all honesty, the cover of this one really drew me in, and I was pleasantly surprised!
The manga is about our FMC, Risa, who's always prepared and responsible for anything (that resonated with me in the best possible way) that "saves" the MMC, Zen, after she finds him all beaten up, giving him an umbrella and indications for the ER. Zen is a goner (not that he admits so) and comes back to her to thank her and to get her out of her comfort zone.
It's pretty funny and the vibes are immaculate.
I'll continue reading this series for sure.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for providing me with a free copy in return for my honest review.
Risa is a no-nonsense girl who has no clue on how to rely on others. One day she helps Zen, a golden retriever of a delinquent boy, who is beaten up in the park. Due to helping Zen out Risa comes to the attention of people she'd rather avoid. Zen keeps coming to her rescue and feelings start to form.
One of my favorite tropes in romance of any form is the grumpy sunshine pairing. It just hits the spot every time. The interactions between Zen and Risa gave me life. They are so adorable and sweet together I kept squealing over them.
The story is a lot of fun and the art really captures you. If I had to complain about one thing it would be the fact that I don't have the next volume yet XD. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quick romantic read.
Risa Amakawa's bag is always too heavy.
"You can do everything on your own."
She's ready to face any kind of situation without the help of others.
What she's not fully ready for is Zen. Zen is a young delinquent who she finds beaten up in the street and whom she offers her help to.
But Zen is not just delinquent, he's really loved by everyone, he's kind and always ready to help others...
Will Risa start to rely on someone else?
I haven't read a manga in a long time, but the synopsis of this one really caught my eyes!
The female lead is very relatable, the story is very cute and sweet.
I really liked volume one and I can't wait to read how the story goes on.
Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for providing me with a copy of this manga.
