Do you love Lovesick Ellie? Do you love heart warming shoujo manga? Love, That's an Understatement is Fujimomo's current ongoing manga series about the love story between a serious student and a delinquent.
This was an amazing first volume. The art is fantastic. Risa and Zen are great characters. They shine off the page and their relationship is adorable. I can't wait to see how it will develop. The pacing was great, especially for a first volume. I definitely recommend this series for anyone who loves a good romcom, heartwarming shoujo manga similar to Lovesick Ellie or A Sign of Affection.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodancha for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to netgalley for a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this manga, it was a little bit confusing in some parts but overall I really liked the story and would read the next volume.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha, and Fujimomo for the opportunity to read Love, That's an Understatement Volume 1.
A brilliant manga with gorgeous art and a fun storyline for romance-seekers.
Risa Amakawa is prepared for all situations, even having a med-kit handy when she comes across a beat-up young man. After offering her help, they continue to encounter each other, and Zen offers her a free-save coupon for her redemption.
Risa finds out that Zen is involved in a convlict involving warring gangs at his school, and standing up for him gets her wrapped up in a sticky situation. While she has a crush on her professor, she finds new, unexpected feelings for Zen. But one of his enemies seems to want to make an attempt at her heart as well!
A manga that I can't emphasize enough how impossible it was to put down. The conflict is interesting, and the art is outstanding! A brilliant first volume in a series that is definitely one to follow!
Risa is your stereotypical aloof genius high school girl. Her one quirk is that she always has the right thing in her bag, no matter the situation. She never has to ask for anyone's help. Even though that means her bag seriously weighs a ton. After saving Zen, a juvenile delinquent, he promises her that he'll pay back the favor. Even if that means constantly following her around until she accepts his help. While chasing Risa around, Zen starts to take an interest in her quirks, calling her cute. Suddenly, Zen seems to be swooping in to save the day and maybe Risa could stand to lean on someone just a little. Especially if it feels that nice to have someone who cares.
Stereotypical romance between the smart girl and the delinquent at it's finest. It's a bit of an overused trope, but the characters are endearing as you watch them grow and slowly start to rely on each other.
This title does a familiar premise well. A tough guy with a good-heart is helped by a kind and studious girl. What makes this title stand out to me is how the characters both play into and subvert their architypes. Tough guy is obviously smitten and smart girl is more on guard, but wanting to reach out to him all the same. There's growth and development, even in this first volume. I genuinely want to see what else these two get up to.
Risa Amakawa is prepared for everything - including helping delinquent Zen Ohira when he has been left beaten on the ground. But Risa is so self-sufficient she doesn't know what to do when Zen is determined to pay her back. And her association with him may mean she needs to ask for help for the first time!
This was a super cute and sweet shojo romance with an absolutely adorable and relatable female lead! Honestly, the personification of "Be Prepared!" And Zen is the definition of a bad boy with a heart - I squeed reading this! I loved seeing the development of their relationship but mostly I enjoyed seeing Risa go out of her comfort zone and try something new!
This is from the mangaka of Lovesick Ellie so the artstyle is lovely and the manga whips along at a great pace - it reminded me of My Little Monster, so if you enjoyed that be sure to check this one out, too!

I would like to tank Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC copy so that I could give an honest review.
I like the design very much. I like the style of the drawings. The cover immediately appealed to me and the title made me curious. The writing style is simple and good. The characters I have taken directly into the heart. I like their nature and that they are mysterious and dynamic. I enjoyed the story very much and look forward to the next parts.
So cuuuute! The art is fantastic and this is the epitome of shoujo! Good girl who's introverted x bad boy who's exudes golden retriever energy. If you love high school romances, then pick this one up!
I loved this one so much! That pacing is perfect. The characters have so much depth they feel real. And it has me squealing.
The best manga with a delinquent I've ever read, and I've tried a fair amount. Need it read what happens next right now! Best shojo relationship.
I don't know what it is about delinquent boys and the good girls in manga, but I love it. This trope has a lot of similarities to Honey So Sweet in a good way. The hero has a way with people that is endearing, and our heroine is the one with the hard shell, and it has BEAUTIFUL art! Can't wait for more of this one!
I have absolutely adored this manga! It had me grinning nearly the entire time. It was adorable! I can’t wait for the next volume. Definitely recommend if you like school romances l.
I honestly loved it and can't wait for the next volume! I was instantly interested in the plot and loved the illustration style too. Each story is written from Risa's view and helps you to understand that she wants to help other's but finds it hard to let others help her and get to know her. But when Zen is persistent she begins to see how maybe she could let other's help her too and in each story she becomes slightly more confident in who she is and more willing to accept the help of Zen.
I really enjoyed the banter between Risa and Zen and the way they begin to trust and rely on each other is really sweet. Thank you so much for the reading copy, I'm really looking forward to many more volumes of Love, That's an Understatement!
Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the eARC.
This was an adorable little manga, and I'm excited for the rest of the series. I'm an easy-to-please reader, but black cat overly-responsible FMC x golden retriever delinquent with a heart of gold who falls first AND harder MMC is a surefire way to get five stars.
This was cute, sweet, and quick, and I'm absolutely sold on the plot.
"Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for this arc in exchange for an honest review."
"Love That's an Understatement" by Fujimomo follows cinnamon roll delinquent Zen and Risa who has difficulty relying on anyone after helping each other develop a system of owing favors to each other.
I would give "Love That's an Understatement" by Fujimomo a 5-star review because, I really enjoyed everything about this manga, I loved the dynamics between Zen and Risa, I really felt like I could connect with the MC Risa, it's really a cute and adorable story I just wish there were physical editions of this manga.
Amakawa is a straight-laced student who strives for perfection in all she does, as well as being self reliant. One rainy day she comes across someone (Zen) sitting in the rain beaten up. However, what she doesn’t know is what will happen after offering him an umbrella and the name of the nearest emergency room. After this fateful day, Zen continuously appears in Amakawa’s world and he sees sides of her that others do not. Amakawa struggles to accept Zen’s help and the ability to ask for help when she needs it.
If you liked Honey So Sweet and My Little Monster, you would probably like this one too as at first parts kinda reminded me of them. Even though it incorporates many of the typical shoujo aspects, it was still an enjoyable read. We get to see how Amakawa lets her guard down around Zen, showing him her weaker side; but also how Zen tries to protect/help her. Some of the facial expressions are pretty funny throughout the manga, we get a sense of the characters' personalities too. I am curious why we don’t see more of what Zen’s one friend looks like compared to the other friends, although we still can tell what his reactions are.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for access to this arc!!
5/5 stars!
I loved this so much!! The developing friendship and relationship between Risa and Zen is really sweet, I loved watching them grow closer. The ending really snuck up on me though! It ended and I was like, no, please, I need more? Now?? lol! I can't wait to read the next installments and see how things develop :3
"Love, that's an understatement" is a sweet, uncomplicated teenage romance starring an independent high schooler who finds it difficult to rely on anyone and a delinquent cinnamon roll.
The romance moves quickly and is (so far) uncomplicated. Both leads are likeable and there's plenty of supporting characters with the potential to cause drama.
There's nothing particularly ground breaking here narratively but this is a solid romance manga with a dreamy art style and lots of potential.
This was a very interesting manga. I enjoyed that the main male character was sort of part of a gang and the female main character was a student who doesn’t really wanna be around him, but they end up getting entangled and the friendship and love for flourishes from this is beautiful where he cares for her and she is growing to care for him. The pace is absolutely beautiful and the pacing on this manga is stunning. This is a good twist on a normal slice of life romance manga, and I am very interested to read more instalment in the series I will read any manga this author put out as I am now a big fan would 100% recommend
I adore when we get an different kind of main character, and this one I relate so much, having to be cold and be seen as more mature than you are is something that I struggled with myself, and it doesn't hurt that the art was astonishingly beautiful. I loved receiving an arc for an genre that I held so dear in my heart that is an shoujo manga, thanks!
This is the first manga I've ever read and it definitely did not disappoint. I genuinely loved it - the main two characters, Risa and Zen, are so cute. She is socially awkward and always worrying and he is seen to be a bad boy but is really sweet with her. I love that he just keeps showing up when she needs him.
I also adored the art - it was illustrated so beautifully❤
I can't wait to read volume 2!
