It was boring enough that I just couldn’t connect with characters, art is cute tho.
Thanks Netgalley and Kodansa for providing me this manga!
Dating is already tough enough, but when you're a nerd for barbeque like Kenta, it can seem impossible. So when he meets Chihiro, a gorgeous businesswoman who tends to be viewed as aloof, it's a big surprise when they just seem to click. With both of them being afraid of a misunderstanding, they're afraid to lose this fragile connection. Just as quickly, Kenta is being relocated for his job and Chihiro decides the best answer is for them to get married. As long-distance newly weds, Kenta and Chihiro are getting to know each other through their passion for grilling.
A goofy and cute slice of life romance. I can't help but be drawn in by Kenta and Chihiro as their relationship is just starting to blossom. From the little misunderstandings to those adorable moments when things just seem to work out, I think this is very sweet story if you're looking for an innocent slow burn romance.
While this title didn't wow me, personally, I can always respect a manga about different food specialties, especially if they include recipes a reader can try. This manga does that job just fine! (It also made me hungry.) The romance story is the weaker element, but again, I respect trying to shake up the genres and possible story points, even if I absolutely do not buy that the couple got married that fast. You want a chill, food-focused story? This might be for you!
This foody romance manga is for all the BBQ enthusiasts out there! Where are you?
Kenta wants someone to share his life and love of barbequeing with and ends up on a blind date with serious hardworking Chihiro. The development of their relationship, along with a few trials is interspersed with grilling recipes and techniques. The artstyle is solid, as is the storytelling!
For fans of food and slice-of-life stories, I would recommend to anyone who already enjoys What did you eat yesterday? and expecially likes meat!
3.5 stars
Thank you to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC so that I could give an honest review!
Quick easy read! Definitely learned a lot about cooking too. Not my usual genre but it was still cute!
I don't know what it is with me and cooking manga, but I really love it! This adorable young marriage relationship is brought together by authenticity and bbq grilling. I'm really loving the direction of it, and the development pace of the relationship. I adore stories like this, and am very excited for the next volume!
Very cute. Don't read on an empty stomach because it will make you hungry. These two characters are sweet and earnest. They got married quick but they are slowly coming to understand each other. Getting to know each other while grilling. It's so fun and cute. Definitely want to read more.
I think this manga just wasn’t for me I liked the art style and the concept behind it. I just think that it was poorly executed and it didn’t match my tastes at all and that is more my fault for asking for a Book, but I didn’t fully comprehend what it was about, but this just wasn’t for me it felt flat. They ended up getting together because of food and it just doesn’t seem right, it felt rushed the pacing was off and overall I just couldn’t get behind the concept of the book.
A pretty cute manga about two people not having much luck in the dating world, and meeting people, and decide screw it...let's get married. LOL. Very Fly me to the moon vibes at first but the great focus is on food. And I do love me food. Some of the things described here and how to cook actually made my list of to try and that's a + in my book. Casual easy romance, funny at times, solid art, and great meal ideas? A 3.5 out of 5 for this cute one. I'll bump it to a 4.
(Thank you Netgallery for supplying a ARC for a fair and honest review)
[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for a copy of this in exchange for an unbiased review]
A blind date mishap leads Kenta to sharing yakiniku with Chihiro and he goes a little overboard with the grilling exposition. This somehow turns to them getting married and they cook a lot and interact a little and they are definitely making the meat the star of the show.
Oh my lord, this is so boring. The story’s heart is in the right place - this is a template that has borne fruit in such places as Beauty & the Feast and She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat - and there’s lots of technique and recipe sharing…
…but the human element is nonsensical. It reads like a high school romance between adults and the whole thing glosses over their relationship developing in favour of this smash cut to the idea of marriage and long distance so they can grill more stuff.
And the grilling is well explained, but it feels dry and overcooked, with neither the art nor writing able to sell what should be incredibly exciting. The level it’s written at is something akin to a cookbook and about as enticing. Yes, please, explain cumin to me.
So you have a stodgy textbook on grilling mixed with a tiresome romance of two married people who haven’t apparently had a wedding ceremony or sex and whom we never see actually dating. Chihiro just shows up and they cook something and Kenta explains stuff.
The marriage angle is so silly that it knocks the whole thing off kilter and, while our leads are nice, they are absolutely bland with no palpable chemistry. It’s ironic that they’re so concerned about seasoning the meat that they forgot to spice up the relationship. And the inevitable ‘hear a male voice and get super suspicious’ chapter? Utterly dire.
What absolutely kills me here is that the perfect version of this story is right there in the afterword, describing the gestation of the manga as the author and editor decide to go from zero to pit boss in the name of the story.
Hearing about them destroying slabs of meat and haranguing a beleaguered store employee is so much better than what we got in the main book and I wanted the whole thing to be about their journey. Missed opportunity.
2 stars - look, it didn’t sear my eyeballs or anything, but the lack of meat on this bone means, ironically, that it is all steak and no sizzle. So, not to be a jerk, and please don’t think me chicken, but I’ll take it on the lamb when the next volume drops.
First I would like to thank publisher for sending me this Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I loved reading this cute little romance and food based manga and I can't wait to read more. I read this in one sitting and i couldnt put this manga down. The characters are little awkward but that's what make them a great fit together. I can't wait to see how there relationship grows in the next volume.
Very cute and pleasant. Highly recommended to those who look for comforting, warm reads. I'm also pretty hungry right now. The art was just delightful.
How to Grill Our Love Volume 1 was an absolute delight to read! Not only did it give warm fuzzy vibes, but it will also make you crave some delicious foods as well! The story opens with Kenta Fukuyama, who has had hard time meeting women through dating apps, as he prepares for a date. His date turns out to be Chihiro Yamaguchi, who surprises him by not only showing up but also seems genuinely interested in him. From there the two bond over their love of food, but things hit a snag when Kenta is transferred to another city for work. What follows is both surprising and genuinely sweet and heart-warming. Thank you Shiori Hanatsuka for writing a story that both tugs at my heart strings as well as cause my stomach to growl as I'm reading!
I thought this was absolutely delightful. I’m a sucker for an over enthusiastic, earnest character, and Kenta is a great MC with an incredible passion for barbecuing (and food in general). I also loved that there were actual recipes within the story even though I’m a) not much of a meat eater and b) much of a cook - I think it’s a great way for readers to connect with the story and encourage experimenting with food. Since this is only the first volume it was all about Kenta, so I’m hoping as the story progresses we get more regarding Chihiro and her passions. This was such a sweet, fun romance and I can’t wait to continue!!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance copy!
This was an incredibly fun manga that I feel like I learned a lot of cooking tips and tricks from lol. It has a lot of delicious food which is the main focal point and reading it really made me hungry for BBQ. I think the relationship is slowly developing and is very cute between them even though the way they went about getting married was pretty sudden and weird. Long distance dating would have probably worked fine if you think about it.
Overall I thought this was really cute and has a very pleasant and fun art style. The dialog and story are fresh compared to other manga out there so I think itll be well received! I read so many stories with wild twists I lowkey expected them to be secretly nefarious in the end (cannibals or something LOL) luckily thats not the case. This is a very cute and easy going manga!
As I was reading the manga I wondered why there was so much focus on food and then when I got to the end I realized that this is the reason why they made the story.
And there I understood why it did not entertain me as much as I expected. Because I expected a little more PLOT and not so much KITCHEN.
However, it was an entertaining and slightly wacky story that made me giggle a lot.
Kenta goes on a blind date with beautiful Chihiro, and they quickly bond over their shared love of grilled food. Cute and sweet, but boy will it make you hungry!
Thank you to Kodansha and NetGalley for the reader's copy that I received in exchange for an honest review.
How to Grill Our Love is about cooking or more like, barbecuing. Kentaro ends up on a date with Chihiro and they end up grilling food together. Soon they meet up like this often until Kenta gets transferred to Hamamatsu, but instead of not seeing anymore they decide to get married. It's a long distance marriage though as Chihiro lives in Tokyo. She comes for the weekends and they grill and try to learn to be a husband and wife. This is very Japanese on many levels and thus quite foreign to me. The series is extremely slow and we get to learn about cooking or more like grilling. Perhaps this was a bit too much when it comes to teaching. Kenta even talks instructions for himself out loud. This feels superimposed even though it's the style used in manga like this.
The art is quite simple and laid back. This is your basic cooking manga in more ways than one, but it's great it's about grilling, so there's a twist to it. Otherwise this doesn't offer all that much, but it's a cute slice of life series and there's meat. Lots of meat.
An awkward man and an equally awkward woman meet from a dating app. They share a love of cooking and eating and decide to skip dating and just get married. This manga is about the start of their journey together as a couple and them learning about each other.
How to Grill Our Love is a cute and sweet story that progresses very gently. The artwork is great but what stands out the most is the culinary tips and asides that would hold appeal to foodies everywhere. The story is told through the eyes of the male main character which is interesting, he can only make assumptions of what the female main character is thinking and feeling.
I would like to see more drama happening in the second volume, as well as more insight into the female main character. I would like to know more about their jobs, family, etc, but I imagine this will all be revealed as the series goes on.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this and review.
This story was so cute!!! I really enjoyed reading their story. Seeing them both come out of their shell and bond over food. Not going to lie, this book made me kind of hungry lol. I can't wait for volume 2.
