Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC! This was a great psychological thriller. You never really knew what to believe. I loved the dual time lines and the suspense overall. I did get a little bored in the middle but it ramped up at the end.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

A fast paced, well written thriller read which I thoroughly enjoyed from the first page until the last, although some topics were a bit hard to read but overall it was a good read.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I can recommend.

"Grey’s Anatomy, but with murder."

Chloe, a newly-qualified nurse practitioner, eagerly embarks on a fresh chapter of her life, filled with excitement as she embraces a new job, a new house, and a new city alongside her loving fiancé, Elton. However, her journey takes an unexpected turn when, on her very first day at work, she discovers that she must face her past head-on—working alongside none other than her ex-husband, a person with whom she shares a hauntingly dark secret that threatens to unravel her perfect new life.

This was a well-written medical thriller. I enjoyed the authenticity of author Jessica Payne’s medical expertise: she is an RN, which really shines through in this book, whether it’s human anatomy, pharmaceutical knowledge or hospital procedures.

However, while the plot held my attention from beginning to end, I must admit that I accurately anticipated the major reveal within the first few chapters. I believe that most astute suspense and thriller genre fans will too. Despite that, I still appreciated the story and unravelling the finer details of the mystery. It's an easy-to-read, engaging page-turner of a book that I have no hesitation in recommending.

My thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and author Jessica Payne for the opportunity to read this work, which will be published on the 14th of June, 2023. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

TW: Murder, assisted suicide/passive and active euthanasia.

Thank you Netgalley & Bookouture for an eARC of The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne! Payne is one of my auto-buy authors, so as soon as I was approved for this one I dove right in. The premise to me was like Greys anatomy meets murder, so how could I not be thrilled?

The book follows our female main character who is living her best life with her fiance, Elton, and a fantastic job at the hospital's ICU in a new town. Her dream life comes to a screeching halt when she walks in on her first day and sees her ex-husband, Jameson,
in his doctor's coat.

Is Jameson a danger to patients around them? She hasn't seen them since they made a decision that would alter their lives forever. And Elton has no idea.

As with all of Jessica Payne's books, this one draws you right in. It's easy to keep flipping the pages to see what happens next. The premise of the book is unique to thrillers that have been coming out most recently, which is refreshing. That being said, I guessed the ending from relatively early on and felt that it could've had some more pages at the end instead of coming to a conclusion and stopping where it did. A good read, but not my favorite. I am looking forward to seeing what Jessica comes up with next!

Some heavy topics to consider before picking this one up - TW: Murder, assisted suicide.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Good Doctor. This was a definite cat and mouse novel. I did not like the heroine at all, even at the end, I never warmed to her. I kept guessing who the culprit was and I did suspect the actual evil one but it played out well. A very twisty book, it will keep your mind engaged.

The Good Doctor was a very fun book to read. It kept you extremely engaged, wanting to keep reading to find out how the plot twists shaped up.
I enjoy how this author writes in a few character point of views. Chloe and Jameson were very interesting and each view also made you think more into the story.
Definitely a must read if you enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing up until the very end. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book early.

This is Jessica Payne's third book and all of them have been very well done.

This was such a fast paced medical thriller. I loved the then and now timeline with the occasionally change in POV.

I was suspicious of every character throughout the book but also really liked most of them.

If you're looking for a book that hooks you from the start and you can't put down, this is it!

Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Chloe has finally moved on from her divorce from Jameson Smith (also named Dr Death from colleagues) she's just qualified as a nurse practitioner and has moved to Portland with her fiance Elton an ICU nurse. Imagine her shock when on her first day she learns her doctor partner is Jameson. Is this just a coincidence or something more? And when she's assigned the task of looking into mortality rates at the hospital she wonders if Jameson is up to his old tricks.
This book is a great medical thriller. I spent the entire time reading it changing my mind who I thought the culprit was. I didn't know who to trust and who was reliable or not. A real page turner. Jessica's role as a nurse practitioner certainly came in handy with all the medical knowledge. Perfect for fans of medical dramas.

SWIPE FOR GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

This was my first medical serial killer read and it won’t be my last!

This novel by @jessicapayne.writer did not disappoint! It kept me guessing right up until the very end and was responsible for a couple jaw drop moments 😱 If you like a psychological thriller, I would recommend checking this one out after its June 14th publication date!

This book was written in dual time lines which I enjoy and it was also written with short chapters, which I absolutely LOVE! Anyone else with me on that??

I’m so bad at writing reviews without including spoilers so I’m gonna leave it at that! 😅

Big thanks to @netgalley and @bookouture for an eARC copy of The Good Doctor in exchange for my honest review!

Teaser:

I finally have everything I’ve ever wanted: a career saving lives, my dream home among the pines, and my caring fiancé, Elton. He doesn’t know about my past. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…

I’m so excited for my life with Elton—we’ve even discussed which room would make the perfect nursery. And we’re working together in our new jobs in the ICU at Portland General hospital.

But when I walk in on my first day, I see my ex-husband Jameson. His familiar broad shoulders are unmistakable in his white doctor’s coat. The shock knocks the air from my lungs.

I’m thrown back to the moment Jameson and I gathered around that hospital bed as the steady beeping on the monitor slowed.

We did something unforgivable that day.
And for the first time, I saw who Jameson truly was.
The truth scared me more than I can explain.
So I ran.

If Jameson tells Elton what I did, I’ll lose everything. Will he destroy my new, perfect life? Is he still a danger to the innocent patients all around us? And how far will I have to go to stop him?

I have read the previous authors books and this one might be the best! I was not disappointed by The Good Doctor. I can’t wait to read future books by this author. They know how to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Chloe is a new nurse practitioner and lands a great job. She is back in the Pacific Northwest and ready to start her new life with her fiancé, Elton. They are settling down after being traveling nurses. They have a new home, and new jobs at the same hospital. Things are looking great until her first day on the new hob. Chloe runs into her ex-husband, Jameson and learns she has to work with him. But she can’t shake their past and what they did. Jameson showed his true colors and Chloe had to flee. Now a game of cat and mouse begins. Will Chloe be able to uncover the truth?

What I enjoyed:
- the pacing was so well done. I was able to finish this book in one sitting. I couldn’t put this down and stayed up till 4 am to finish
- Dual POVs. We get Chloe and Jameson’s POVs. This kept me guessing on the cat and mouse chase
- the premise of a medical serial killer was refreshing for a thriller book.
- I love the authors writing style!
- The twists!

Overall, this was a solid and twisty read! I had an idea of what was going to happen. But it made me second guess every idea I had. Solid 4 stars out of 5. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

If you like greys then this is the book for you! Granted, it's not always believable and the characters don't always make the best choices but that's what makes it all so fun to read! It's got a good pace and a few twists and turns, I love medical thrillers anyways so this was right down my alley. A quick and easy read, just don't overanalyse it or think too hard and enjoy it for what it is

This was such a wild ride! I read it in only two sittings as it kept me reading! THE GOOD DOCTOR taps into a popular topic of late about how doctors and nurses decide the fate of their patients' lives. This was a fresh take and had me guessing until the end. The scary thing about this topic is how these doctors or nurses are serial killers roaming the halls of a place we go to heal and get better--not die intentionally by the hand of those we trust. This book explores that theme really well.

Jessica Payne said the book is like Grey's Anatomy plus murder and thats exactly it! You get messy relationships, complications, and murder! The tension is great in this one. It starts slow with you knowing something happened but not what and then bang its just building and building. You felt trapped like Chole, as she has impossible choices to make before things get bad. I mean with her suspecting a medical serial killer in the hospital, you now things have got to be sketchy. I had a lot of fun trying to piece things together while things crumbled. The twists and turns were my favorite they added so much to the story and thinking like what would I do or say if this was me.

Thank you to Jessica Payne, Bookouture, and Netgalley for my gifted copy.

Thanks NetGalley and Bookoutre for the Arc of The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne.

My first book by this author was filled with a thrill of a medical ride but with a few implausible moments. I did however enjoy the book and would recommend.

The Good Doctor is a gripping thriller, I was hooked from page 1.

Chloe fled from her husband and became a travelling nurse where she meets Elton. Together they decide its time to settle down so they buy a house and get permanent jobs in Portland. Her sense of shock and fear when she sees her now ex-husband working there and even worse is to be her manager is enthralling. What follows is a game of cat and mouse, will she be killed next? Will she find evidence of who is causing all the deaths?

I never believed that Chloe's ex-husband Jameson was responsible for stalking her and trying to hurt/kill her. I enjoyed the duel points of view and was frantically trying to figure out who the culprit was. I felt the characters were well defined and the locations were well described. Chloe's sense of fear was palpable and I did not see the twist coming at the end.

Chloe has it all. A new fiancé, Elton. A new home. A new job, her first as a nurse practitioner. There’s only one problem. She’ll be working directly with her ex-husband Jameson, the man she’s spent three years trying to avoid. Worse yet, they will be investigating Mortality Reduction, a subject she knows too much about, thanks to her past with Jameson. In fact, his nickname in this new hospital is Dr. Death. Chloe has suspicions, suspicions that may or not be correct. She is also fighting a familiar attraction, not to Elton but to…Jameson.

I wanted to like The Good Doctor because Jessica Payne is one of my favorite authors. However, I quickly figured out who the villain was and what was going to happen. I wondered why Chloe didn’t take her suspicions to the hospital authorities or the police. So three stars.

Thank toy to NetGalley, Bookouture and Jessica Payne for this ARC.

I finally have everything I ever wanted after fleeing from my husband and getting my nurse practitioner license. Now I’ve settled in Portland with my wonderful fiancée and we’re going to settle down. However, on the first day on the new job I run into the very same ex that I ran from, Jameson. I will never forget what he made me do, what I did with him. Now that he’s at this hospital I’m noticing the trend of dead patients is following him. Is he truly a Dr. Death? Someone is and I’m determined to find out who before its too late.

What an interesting and captivating book! This one kept me guessing until the very end. I did not see it coming one bit! The premise was so much fun. I always love a good medical thriller and this one did not disappoint. The writing was phenomenal. It was so engaging, and I didn’t want to put it down. The characters were so well developed I really enjoyed them all, which wasn’t good when I was supposed to hate some of them!

I agree with the publisher on this one, if you are a fan of Freida McFadden then you will absolutely love this one.

Thank you so much to Bookouture, @bookouture, and Netgalley, @netgalley, for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

The Good Doctor is a standalone thriller by best-selling author, Jessica Payne. I’ve seen this advertised a lot recently and every time I see the cover, I’m reminded of what an excellent read this was. I just love the cover, it’s so captivating. I read it over a week ago and am still thinking about it. Jessica Payne is an author not to be missed. Her writing style is a delight to read as its easy to become immersed in and suddenly you realize that hours have passed. I’ve read this author and this one was her best yet. Jessica Payne is now an auto-buy author for me, I don’t even need a synopsis before buying. While the story was somewhat predictable in places, that never detracted from the absolute fun I had read it. Jessica Payne knows how to write interesting and complex characters. The dual POV was excellent and gave us both sides of a very complicated relationship and separation which was slowly revealed layer by layer as the book progressed. I can’t recommend this one enough. Perfect for fans of domestic thrillers.
