This is my third Jessica Payne book and probably my favorite. Assisted suicide for terminal patients is an interesting topic, especially for a psychological thriller. I thought the outcome was predictable but I really enjoyed this speedy thriller that alternated between Chloe and Jameson viewpoints in the past and present. I was able to binge this in one day!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Jessica Payne for the arc.
I enjoy a medical thriller as hospitals make for an interesting setting. However, this fast paced novel was full of implausible situations and I did not enjoy the story
What a thrilling book! I am so happy to get this arc! Thank you @netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review! This book had such a huge twist I was shocked. First, I loved the dual POV as well as the past and present timeline. It’s always great to see how both sides tell the story. Second, I could not put this book down! I loved how there was a build up to the story and how we learned about the characters and their pasts. After that though, about half way through, the story took off and it was unputdownable! So good, 5 stars and truly recommend this arc!
Chloe has her Mr. Right, Jameson a doctor who also helps patients to end their life when they are near the end. He has the nickname Dr. Death. When Chloe sees something she leaves and moves away from Jameson.
She ends up back at the hospital working with Jameson. She notices an unusual number of deaths in patients he has seen. This book captured m attention from the start. I would recommend reading this outside of a hospital setting.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I figured out the plot twist early on, so I felt like I was dragging through waiting for the reveal - or for something more shocking to come up, which it didn't. I've said it before but I generally don't mind predictable books, but I want to have fun with the book, and I just didn't have fun here. The mains frustrated me and it felt like they were being so purposefully vague instead of simply talking to each other (or like. Alerting the administration lmao). It was all right, I didn't hate it but I didn't particularly like it either.
The Good Doctor unfortunately was very predictable.
I knew what the twist was going to be about 20% into the book and had to sit through a lot of stupidity and bad decisions in order to get to the end.
The worst part is that all of what happened could have been prevented, if the main characters just communicated.
Not very enjoyable at all
Payne DOES it again with this thriller based in the PNW. Chloe and her fiancée Elton are traveling nurses. When they both get jobs at Portland General Hospital, they decide to buy a house and plant roots.
Elton was hired first, but when Chloe is hired, she gets the surprise of her lifetime. Her Ex-husband Jameson is also working there. He is a doctor, and they are assigned to work with each other. They both share a secret and she fled her marriage to him years ago. He still has feelings for her.
Patients come up dead more frequently than should happen and Chloe thinks Jameson is involved in mercy killings. Who is involved?
This novel was face-paced and so incredible twisty, that I could not put it down. Her other novels Make Me Disappear and The Lucky One are incredible too.
Triggers: Illness and Physician-assisted suicide. I like that the author starts with this content, so you can be aware.
Someone once said, “Today I am what I am because of my yesterday’s choices. And where I shall be tomorrow will be decided today.”
This aptly applies to Chloe, in more ways than one!
Looking for new beginnings, Chloe Woods and her fiance, Elton, leave Seattle in the dust and head to Portland General Hospital. Elton, a 13-year veteran as an ICU nurse, is looking for a change and Chloe has just completed her Nurse practitioner degree and is eager to take what she’s learned and apply it. Again, in more than one way! You can imagine Chloe’s shock when she arrives at work on the first day and discovers that her ex-husband has also relocated to the same hospital! Coincidence? Her fears increase when some patients suddenly pass away.
In addition to the time-hopping, I really had trust issues for the first little bit. I didn’t know if Jameson was really looking out for Chloe or if there was something sinister going on; there was so much push and pull between them. In fact, the whole triangle ‘thing’ between the characters was suspect and done really well. I didn’t know if their job placements really were coincidental or if it was planned. There were so many questions (in a good way) and I had to keep reading to find out the truth. I appreciated the exploration of the relationships between healthcare workers and how nurse practitioners are sometimes treated by those in their field as well as those they pledged to care for.
“We’re nurses. Our job is to save people.”
These worlds will come back to haunt someone.
This is a fantastic, thought-provoking, fast-paced, twisty thriller that had me guessing at every turn.
The author's career as a neonatal nurse practitioner definitely provided authenticity for this story.
I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This is a very hard review to write. Why? because it is hard to put into words how excellent this book is. If your looking for a very suspenseful quick read this book is for you! Chloe left her ex husband Jameson and fell in love with Elton after moving states to get away from Jameson. Who is at her new job? Jameson the ex, the person she suspects of being a serial killer . or is he? So many layers to this book no matter what you think is going on most likely your wrong. This book also has a very shocking ending. I would give this book more than five stars it is so good! Read it!!! I promise you will love this book and any book Jessica Payne has written is excellent!
Read in 2 sittings, if sleep hadn't prevailed I would have devoured in one.
This chilling and utterly compelling story is one of those books which grabs your attention from the very beginning. The author has really got into her characters minds and explored the different emotions.
I love this genre and found this to be one of the best books I have read in a while.
Chloe has so much to be excited about. She just moved to Portland with her fiancé, Elton, they just bought a house, she just got a new car and she just got a job as a nurse practitioner in the ICU. A brand new life.
On her first day at the hospital, she finds out she will be working with none other than Jameson Smith, her ex-husband. There’s a reason she ran and divorced him but now they have to work side by side and she hopes her life isn’t turning upside down.
Jameson has a reputation as being “Dr. Death” because he provides legal euthanasia. He believes people should be allowed the right to die with dignity. Chloe thinks this has gotten out of hand and that Jameson is a medical serial killer. She has to sneak around and lie to look for proof and hope Elton doesn’t find out she has a secret of her own.
DPV & two timelines so you can see what happened in the past & what is currently happening from both sides. I also loved the idea of a medical serial killer!
I did figure out the ending pretty early but the book was great and kept me entertained. There are so many twists and Jessica Payne does an amazing job of explaining everything in the end.
Thank you Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Good Doctor will be available June 14, 2023!
Fast paced thriller!
The twists and turns are absolutely crazy.
I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting.
You are scared for Chloe and root for her the whole time. Between Jameson, Laura, and Elton, you don’t know who to trust. Highly recommend!
Whew what a ride!! This is a dark thriller but it didn't keep me from turning the pages to find out what in the world would happen next. First medical thriller I've read but won't be my last!
Book Title: The Good Doctor
Author: Jessica Payne
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: June 14, 2023
My Rating: 4 Stars
Pages: 308
When I read "Make Me Disappear "and "The Lucky One]" by Jessica Payne, I gave them both 4 stars. Since I am stingy with stars ~ 4 from me = Great!
Story is told then and now from the POV of Chloe Wood and Dr. Jameson Smith
. Chloe has been a traveling nurse for ten years and she just completed a doctorate program and is now a nurse practitioner (A fully certificated nurse practitioners can see patients and prescribe prescriptions however is not a MD so cannot perform surgery).
Chloe just accepted a job to work in the ICU in a Portland hospital. Although, originally she is from Seattle, she and Elton her finance whom she met while working at a hospital as he is a traveling nurse as well; have decided they want to live and work in Portland..
Chloe was surprised perhaps shocked to see her former husband Dr. Jameson Smith on her first day at work additionally she will be working with him.
He was known in Seattle as "Doctor Death", as he was one of the few doctors who would provide legal euthanasia services. He believes people should die with dignity so would assist those with terminal illnesses who want to die peacefully.
Chloe doubted his motives and now has to work with him.
Story had me curious and found this page-turning and ‘unputdownable’.
I read a lot of psychological thrillers – love the challenge of figuring out whodunit However . . .
I know to expect twists and turns!
I know to be suspicious of everyone!
I know that more than likely the most obvious person didn’t do it!
So yes! I got whodunit but others may have also found the ending predictable.
It was still a 4 Star entertaining read!
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture or granted me this early eGalley.

There was a lot to like in this book. The premise in itself was promising; A medical serial killer, disguising as a helper only wanting to relieve pain. I knew little about serial killers like that, so it was refreshing to learn more about it. Although you know there probably is a killer, you keep wondering if you have gotten it all wrong. The author manages to send you on a wild goose chase time and time again. There are two POVs, and the development in their theories are fun to follow. Sometimes i felt the ambivalence already had been described and the suspicions were repeated too often, but that was just a minor hurdle. I think the editing could have been more thorough in the beginning. An example: someday I want to have a family, and the same sentiment is repeated just one paragraph later and then AGAIN just some sentences later. Things like that disturbs the flow, but luckily it got better.
The suspense increased steadfastly, and I was surprised several times.
All in all an enjoyable thriller, that would have gotten more stars from me by more editing.
Thanks to netgalley and bookatoure for the arc in exchange for my honest review
3.5 🌟
This book was a fast paced thriller! This is my first book by Jessica Payne and I have somewhat enjoyed this book! The book plot twist wasn't really a plot twist and I did predict what the twist was about half way ish into the book. The book does touch on a topic that is may be sensitive to others, so please keep in mind before starting this book. This book has a dual POV and dual timeline and its not too confusing and the style of adding both duality is well done! This book basically gave the vibe of you can't trust anyone and everyone is being sus all the time hahaha.
I really tried to like this book but found myself not. I am a nurse myself so parts of it I could relate others not.
Just wasn't for me but I will be open to reading other books by the author!
I was hooked from page 1. What a book! This is a great thriller that had plenty of twists and turns. I was sure I had guessed the culprit a few times, but then I was proven wrong.
I’d definitely recommend to anyone who likes a well written and twisty thriller.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Wow! What a book! She is engaged to Elton, has a new job, and a dream home - but the first day of work she runs into her ex-husband and finds out she will be working with him. What a shock!
She was h9oping to forget the past - what she and her ex did - but can she? Will he tell? Why is she still attracted to him? Will they be able to work together?
Wow, I really loved this thriller! Jessica Payne nailed this novel with just the right amount of drama, romance, suspense and a great final twist. I had been in such a book rut prior to reading The Good Doctor. The medical setting/terminology had me sucked in from the first chapter. I also felt like I really got to know our main characters, Chloe, Jameson and Elton. Each of them was written so well, that I felt like I was walking the daily rounds in the hospital with Chloe, who was a nurse practitioner. My heart went out to Jameson, gosh I kind of fell for him myself. I also loved how Payne had you believing one thing, and then that gets completely turned around, leaving the reader feeling a sense of urgency to find out what in fact is really going on. I found it very hard to put my Kindle down as I was reading this. I loved Payne's writing style. I definitely recommend this to all of my fellow thriller readers. It is not one to miss!
