The Good Doctor is a gripping Medical thriller full of red herrings.

Chloe is a new Nurse Practitioner who has been working as a travel nurse for years and is finally ready to settle down in Oregon with her fiancée Elton. When she goes to her new hospital orientation, she comes face to face with her physician ex husband, Jameson. The two met while working together in Seattle, where he was referred to as Dr. Death for the role he played in legal physician assisted suicide. Years ago, Chloe became suspicious that he may be taking things a bit too far in that area, and when patients start to die at a high rate, she is convinced Jameson is behind it.

This book had an interesting take on the idea of so called angels of mercy, healthcare workers who do terrible things. As a nurse myself I liked that the author clearly knew the ins and outs of working in a hospital and could describe that well. The premise was fantastic and very entertaining. I did figure out the ending, but the multiple red herrings definitely distracted me along the way.

I found this to be a fast paced, easy to read, fun thriller with short chapters that will keep you flipping pages late into the night. I wanted to shake a little sense into the main character a time or two, but it was fun in the same way you watch a scary movie and want to scream at the screen the whole time!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Chloe hasn’t had an easy life. But it looks like she’s finally found love with Jameson. Until the truth flashes before her eyes, and it seems she will not have the happily ever after life she envisioned.
Fast forward, and she is now engaged to a good man,Elton. But when she winds up working closely with someone, she hoped to never see again, she may finally have to deal with her past.
Did this end the way I thought it would? Nope. Short chapters mostly told from Chloe’s perspective made the pages just fly. I also learned quite a bit about so-called medical angels of mercy. Scary stuff! I didn’t agree with all of Chloe’s choices but then again, I couldn’t say what I would do if I was in her shoes.
This book publishes in June and to me, it would be a perfect beach read.

Marketed as "Grey's Anatomy but with murder," THE GOOD DOCTOR was an absolutely perfect medical thriller!

With two timelines and dual points of view, we follow Chloe, a former traveling nurse who is now a nurse practitioner, and her fiance Elton. They have decided to settle down, buy a house, and put down roots in Portland. Chloe was offered a dream job at the hospital, and there was a position available for Elton too. Chloe is marveling over her good fortune until she arrives for orientation and sees HIM. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧. 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱-𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝. She thought when she fled Seattle, she was leaving him behind too.

Jameson acquired the nickname because he can provide legal euthanasia services, but when Chloe was put on a task force back in Seattle to research the unusual spike in deaths, she noticed the majority of the patients were Jameson's. After watching a streaming special on murderous medical professionals, she realizes to her horror that Jameson has dubbed himself the Angel of Mercy and is targeting patients who don't actually want to die.

Now she's expected to work under his employ, and before long, the suspicious deaths begin happening again. She uncovers shocking evidence and mementos against Jameson, and the tension continues to build until it was just about painful! I loved that the author did her due diligence researching the topic of physician-assisted suicide and treated it with respect while exploring all the grey areas of this controversial topic.

I'm forever grateful for my place on her ARC team and for an early copy of this book. THE GOOD DOCTOR will publish June 14, 2023, from Bookouture.

While the plotline was unique, it also was a little predictable and overly dramatic.. I think for students, there can be some good discussions about assisted suicide for terminal patients and also about communication issues in relationships. I think my students will enjoy this book

Chloe left her husband, Jameson, in Seattle three years ago. She has moved on now with her new fiance, Elton. They were both traveling nurses and have now decided to stay in Portland and take positions at a local hospital. Chloe was shocked to see Jameson there on her first day at work. She was even more shocked to learn that she was going to work with him daily. Jameson was known in Seattle as "Doctor Death", because he works in critical care and helps assist those with terminal illnesses who want to die peacefully. When many of his patients start dying suddenly, she starts to wonder if he's actually killing them on purpose. She finds suspicious notebooks in his office and learns that his last nurse practitioner was killed. As Chloe digs deeper, she's put to the test. Will she figure out what's happening to these patients? Is it Jameson or someone else she knows?

THE GOOD DOCTOR was a gripping page-turner. I really liked Chloe and I felt bad for her. She became paranoid and really was put through an emotional roller coaster. I loved the past and present timelines, it really helped with getting to know more about her past with Jameson. Once I thought knew what was happening, something else happened in the story to change my mind. I was happy in the end that my suspicions were correct. Well done, Jessica Payne, you kept me on the edge of seat the entire time.

Chloe is our first-person narrator and protagonist. She’s a traveling nurse who just got her doctorate and has become a nurse practitioner. Though originally from Seattle, she and her fiancé, Elton, make roots in Portland. Chloe got offered a great job at a hospital there, working in the ICU.

When she starts her first day at the hospital, her heart sinks when she sees her ex-husband, Dr. Jameson Smith. Dr. Smith also goes by the name “Dr. Death”, as he is one of the few doctors in the area who provides legal euthanasia services. He believes people should die with dignity, but Chloe has personally seen him at work, and doesn’t think he’s doing this for compassionate reasons. Now she is forced to work alongside him.

One night, while watching a show about medical serial killers, she realizes that it all made sense - she left Jameson with only a note after seeing his work firsthand, convinced something about it was wrong. Now more patients than usual are dying in the ICU they work at. Was she married to a serial killer? What will her new fiancé do if he knew she was present for even one of these procedures? Will she be risking her life trying to find out?

This was a super speedy book about a topic that isn’t discussed as much as it should be: the right to assisted suicide in terminal cases. I like that the author tackled that topic, all while producing a page-turning psychological thriller. The ending was pretty predictable, but it was still entertaining to see it unravel. This is a quick read that most any thriller lover will enjoy! Four stars.

(Thank you to Bookouture, Jessica Payne, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on June 14, 2023.)

Another high-octane thriller from Jessica Payne!

I had the privilege to read an early version of THE GOOD DOCTOR, and was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Jessica crafts such layered, proactive characters, with such fantastic tension and SO MANY amazing twists. I admit medical thrillers are a harder sell for me, but this one nailed it for me, and I think it will appeal to lovers of medical thrillers and those who aren’t as inclined!

Highly recommend to any fans of thrillers, both medical and other!

So grateful to Netgalley for this arc!!

Chloe is all excited to start her new life in Portland. She has the career she wanted, the house, and she is engaged to Elton. Then the first day she walks in to the hospital and finds out she will be working with her ex-husband-Jameson.

Chloe is asked to be part of a task force and track people dying at hospital. Can history be repeating itself? She is worried someone is watching her, following her, and even entering her house. Someone is killing people at the hospital and she is worried she might be next.

This was a slow burn that will easily entertain you.
