I know this is only her 3rd book but I truly think Jessica Payne is one of the greatest writers out there right now! She could write about literally nothing and I would soak up every word. Her writing style is mesmerizing, her characters soooo well developed and her plot twists are jaw dropping!! Would give this more than 5 stars if I could!
The Good Doctor started out so strong, but started to fall off for me around 60%. A lot of it got repetitive and question’s introduced in the beginning of the book were still unanswered over halfway into the book. I started to lose my interest and skim to the end. That said, I still enjoy Jessica Payne’s writing and I’ll continue to auto read her books.
Medical thriller? Always count me in!
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for my eARC of The Good Doctor!
This is the second book I've read of Jessica Payne's, and her third novel - she's a nurse turned author.
Chloe Woods is a nurse practitioner, starting her new career in Portland. What are the odds that her new job would pair her up with Dr. Jameson Smith, her ex-husband?
Jameson has always had a high number of patient mortalities in his care. Does he simply have the sickest patients, or something more sinister? Is he a medical serial killer?
Don't try to out-guess this one, just enjoy the travels - recommended!
Released on June 14.
I just love this author! “It’s like Grey’s Anatomy with murder”
Now, tell me who wouldn’t want to read that?! 👀
It’s about a Nurse Practitioner who left her Doctor ex-husband and their secrets behind.
She has started a new life, in a new city, in a new hospital with her new loving and supportive partner- he is a Nurse and will be working alongside her.
The problem is, when she arrives for her first day at work, her ex-husband is there

Jessica Payne is the author of MAKE ME DISAPPEAR and THE LUCKY ONE. She lives in the Pacific Northwest where the mountains and Puget Sound are home. Beyond writing, she loves to run, rock climb, and explore the great outdoors with her daughter and husband. When holding still, which isn’t often, you’ll find a book in her hand and a cat or dog in her lap. Jessica writes suspense and thriller and is the host of #MomsWritersClub on Twitter and YouTube.
“This time will be perfect.”
Chloe is excited about her fresh start as a nurse practitioner. More so to be doing this with her amazing fiancé, Elton. They met as travel nurses, and despite Chloe having some baggage, they were in love. Until Chloe realizes she will be working under her ex-husband. And then patients start dying.
This was a wild ride. I enjoyed the alternating narrators and timelines. And the way this plot was layered. The twists and turns were so deceptive.
The characters were well thought out and had great story arcs. Chloe seemed like a nice woman with a tragic past who just wanted to be connected to someone. Elton seemed like the loving partner who wanted to support his fiancée in any way possible. Jamison seemed arrogant, but in the way good doctors can be.
The build-up for this was intense, and the way the story is told, you don’t know who to trust or what to believe. Jessica is so gifted in weaving a plot filled with chaos.
This was a fast-paced and intense read. It is impossible to find a safe place to pause, so there is a good chance this book will keep you up all night.
It’s a little more people focused, but this reminds me a little of Robin Cook’s thrillers. I liked the cat and mouse game between Chloe and her ex Jameson. I’m also a fan how we start in the middle of the story, not knowing how the characters got there and then slowly learned what happened. Slow enough that we fill in the gaps based upon the limited information given. Having of course some being incorrect. It’s the summer reason season and I’ve been reading a lot of mystery and thrillers and I kept wondering who was reliable.
I’d read for a while, start to piece things together and then recollect my thoughts after some new information. This isn’t your pulse pounding edge of your seat thriller, but one that makes you think as the information slowly reveals itself. There is a lot of time to think about what you know and guess on what happened to get the characters where they are and where they are heading. Mysteries in both directions. A bonus.
And did I mention the drama between the characters. The current fiancé, the ex-husband and the woman they have in common. What are their secrets and how high will the stakes go?
I did not want to put this one down. I needed to know what was going to happen and what everyone’s secrets were. If you like Gray’s Anatomy mixed with a little murder, you need this one.

You know a book is good when I miss the pub day by a day or two or three because I have to gather my thoughts of how wild or ridiculous (in a good way) it was. Say hello to (my little friend.. no I’m kidding) The Good Doctor!
First, check your TWs. I think as always it’s important to do so. Second, I never realized I needed a medical thriller. There’s so much potential there and Jessica Payne tapped into ALL of it. Plus, I get a little love? We know I love a romantic suspense, so I’m gonna rock with this.
Buckle in an enjoy the ride, because once you start The Good Doctor, you will have a very hard time trying to put it down. It’s definitely a “read in one sitting type of book” and it’s out now! So snag it and enjoy it
I tried to read this one and just had to DNF it about 20% in. It was like a bad gray's anatomy episode. Just not my thing but best of luck.
Just loved it. Superbly written thriller. Lots of twisty plots and suspicious characters, I was guessing the whole time. Didn't expect the end though. I liked Jameson and Chloe both. I suspected both many times throughout the book. The ending was brilliant. Highly recommended for mystery thriller fans.
I so enjoyed this book! I will be looking for other books by this author. I read this in one sitting and it had me on the edge of my seat. I thought I had it figured out and boy, was I wrong!! I would definitely recommend this book!
The Good Doctor was a well done slow burn thriller. The action started out slowly, told in dual timelines past and present, but there was an underlying tension built up from the very beginning. I was on the edge of my seat by the halfway point. I enjoyed that the medical aspects seemed well researched as well. Definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of thrillers or medical dramas!
Chloe has everything she's ever wanted. She's engaged to Elton, she has a job as a nurse practitioner at a hospital in Portland, and she and Elton have bought a house. All seems to be going well for Elton and Chloe, right? On Chloe's first day of orientation at the hospital she notices someone standing with their back to her. It can't be him, can it? Chloe's ex-husband Jameson works at the same hospital she just accepted a job from and to make it worse, she'll be working directly with Jameson!
Unexpected deaths keep happening and Chloe thinks it's happening again. She left Jameson for a reason and the reason is her brother's death. Is Jameson capable of killing people? Is he a serial killer? Chloe had to run after what she saw with her brother, Nathan. She left her wedding ring with a note to Jameson. She became a traveling nurse to avoid contact with anyone. That's when she met Elton. She fell in love with his positive attitude and gentle spirit. Why when they finally decide to settle down and get a home does she run into her ex?
Elton is jealous of Chloe working with Jameson. Chloe tries to reassure him that nothing is happening between them but she's working late, going in early, and caught with him too often. Chloe doesn't want to let Elton know what she believes Jameson to be, but that's causing problems between them. Will Chloe prove that Jameson is a serial killer? Will Chloe and Elton live happily ever after? Will Jameson's twin sister cause problems? Could she be the killer? Is someone following Chloe? Is Chloe safe?
Jessica Payne does an outstanding job of building the suspense until it's so crazy you have to keep reading deep into the night! The Good Doctor is a fantastic thriller that will keep the reader flipping the pages no matter what time of day or night it is! I give The Good Doctor 5 stars and my very highest recommendation! The Good Doctor is available to purchase now and I recommend that you buy it and read it very soon! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Good Doctor in exchange for a fair review! #TheGoodDoctor
This was excellent! It was the perfect amount of psychological creepiness for a thriller. Kept me guessing until the very end.
Jessica delivers on another tense and suspenseful thriller. This one is marketed as "Grey's Anatomy with murder" and I feel like that's a pretty accurate description. I always enjoy when thrillers have a medical aspect to them so this was a fun read. I look forward to more from Jessica!
The Good Doctor by Jessica Payne was a gripping psychological medical thriller for start to finish. I was hooked from the start especially as it was a great page turner, with lots of twists and turns that was filled with suspense and tension throughout, once I started to read it I could not put this book down. If you love a Medical drama i.e. Grey’s Anatomy this is a book for you especially as it has a great twist - murder in your workplace!
I highly recommend this book and a great holiday read. 5 star read.
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Bookatoure for the arc in exchange for my honest review
Jessica Payne does it again!!
Just finished this ARC last night in one sitting. I lost sleep but it was worth it!
A medical serial killer... like Grey's Anatomy but with murder, yes please!
4/5 stars - Only because nothing of hers can compare to The Lucky One - also by Jessica Payne... so if you haven't read that one, go read it now, while you wait on next Wednesday to come along!
Go ahead and add June 14th to your calendar and grab this fun and twisty ride when it is released!
4.5 stars
This is one of my favorite reads for 2023! This fast-paced thriller kept me guessing and turning the pages. I liked the dual timeline, as well as the fact that the twists kept coming! It was interesting to find out the motive behind the characters' actions. There's a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the medical angle. Some parts were a bit predictable, but this was an engaging read overall, and I look forward to reading other books by this author.
This book was quite good but really struggled to like or engage with the main character. I felt it dragged at some points but it picked up towards the end
Jessica Payne has done it again. The Good Doctor is a gripping, fast paced, twisty story that I just could not put down. I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
The good doctor is my first by Jessica Payne and definitely not my last. A tense hooked from the first page book.you’ll literally stay up all night to see what curve balls you get thrown. I love stories that have twists and turns and make you second and third guess what is going on and the good doctor is this and more!
